Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer :
According to a new study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, a new tool may help standardize the use of CT scans in children with a minor head injury and help reduce the number of scans performed. An astonishing number as high as 650,000 children with a minor head injury resulting in loss of consciousness, amnesia, disorientation and vomiting are seen each year in emergency departments in hospitals across North American. CT scans are important for diagnosing serious brain injury but they unfortunately they expose children to the potentially harmful effects of ionizing radiation and significantly add to health care costs. Use of CT for minor head injury in Canadian pediatric emergency departments has increased to 53% in 2005 from 15% in 1995.

A team of researchers from pediatric institutions across Canada have developed the CATCH rule (Canadian Assessment of Tomography for Childhood Injury) which will help physicians determine if a child with minor head trauma should receive a CT scan or not. The study involved 3866 children from the ages of 0 to 16 from 10 Canadian pediatric teaching institutions. The idea with the new “CATCH” rule will hopefully reduce the number of children who receive a CT scan. This will not only reduce unnecessarily exposing children to possible harmful effects, it will help alleviate the wait times for CT scans and health care costs.

My understanding is that the CATCH Rule, is made up of 7 basic findings from a child’s history and physical exam. From these findings, it is easier to standardize the need for CT and reduce the number of CT scans performed in children with minor head injury.

Child Brain Injury Lawyer in Ottawa – What to do and expect…

Ottawa Brain Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth explains what to expect if your child suffers from a traumatic brain injury in Ontario.

Traumatic Brian Injury ( TBI ) in Children

Ottawa Brain Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth explains what to expect if your child suffers from a traumatic brain injury in Ottawa or brain injury in Ontario.
As a parent, we are ready to do anything possible to protect our children from harm, pain, or suffering. Unfortunately, we cannot protect our children from everything. If your child has suffered a traumatic brain injury (or “TBI”), you must consider your options and make actions that will be in your child’s best interests, to help them on their road to rehabilitation and recovery.

There are some things that can be expected if your child has suffered a TBI. Generally, any injury to a child, including a TBI, is extremely serious and should be treated as such. Children can be even more susceptible to brain injuries than adults, however, because a child’s brain and body are still in a state of development and a TBI can cause permanent disability and limitation in terms of functioning, movement, speech, or thought development process.

Your Child’s Medical Support Team

If you believe that your child is a victim of a TBI, your first step is to seek appropriate medical help as soon as possible. This involves consultation with various doctors, such as a general practitioner, a pediatrician, neurosurgeon, and any medical brain specialist generally, especially one that deals with children’s brain injuries. This also involves consultation with a psychologist and psychiatrist, to ensure that your child’s mental health is also assessed during this complex brain injury process. These steps will help to safeguard and protect for your child’s rehabilitation and they will also empower you and your family with options and ideas to consider in the ongoing recovery process.

Your Child’s Legal Support Team

In addition to the medical team of specialists helping to assist in your child’s recovery and rehabilitation, it is also necessary for you to enlist the help of a personal injury lawyer specializing in Traumatic Brain Injuries. A Top Children’s TBI Lawyer such as David Hollingsworth has a highly specialized expertise in this area of law. It is important to consult with an experienced Ontario brain injury lawyer that will share the process with you. Generally, the process is complex and can be painful since your Child’s Brain Injury is a real tragedy. But there are steps that you can take to deal with the situation once it has happened, to ensure for your child’s best future prospects in terms of health and happiness in mind.

How to Secure Maximum Compensation

A top Ottawa Children’s Brain Injury lawyer can help you to determine who may be responsible for your child’s TBI. If the injury is due to someone’s negligence in any capacity, then your child is entitled to maximum compensation for his or her injuries. An Ottawa personal injury lawyer or Ottawa brain injury lawyer will seek compensation for you and your child to assist in recovery.

Since brain injuries are often known as “invisible injuries”, they can be complex and difficult to fully understand and to deal with. Children, after-all, often have less developed communication capabilities and are often not able to as easily or fully nuance their symptoms, or even to understand that they have developed. A children’s TBI can be a real life altering experience for the victim of the personal injury, requiring ongoing medical treatment and rehabilitation. A good personal injury lawyer will ensure that your child’s compensation will be adequate to deal with future years to come, and this is where an experienced Ottawa brain injury lawyer is critical. Your Top Ottawa Children’s brain injury lawyer will be able to help you to secure for your child’s financial future, and also to develop a life care plan. You owe it to yourself and your child to speak to the right Ottawa brain injury lawyer and do this properly. Your child has been through enough. You have been through enough.

Ottawa accidents and black ice. Lawyer- avoiding personal injury.

As an Ottawa personal injury lawyer, I have a large number of my car accident victims come to me and describe their Ottawa car accident or Ontario car accident. In the last month, there have been an incredible number of Ottawa car accidents due the ice conditions here in Ottawa and in Eastern Ontario. I want to remind everyone the dangers of icy roads and black ice while driving and hopefully avoid any further Ottawa accidents and Ontario accidents as well as reduce the number of Ottawa accidents and Ontario accidents resulting in personal injury. When Ontario roads are slick with ice, please be extra cautious to avoid car accidents and personal injury.  Unfortunately black ice is very difficult to see and can result in serious personal injury or  even death due to a car accident.”

When people can’t see the ice, they think it’s not there…but IT CAN BE !!! “Most accident victims don’t notice the ice on the road until it is too late,” says Ottawa personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth. “You have to automatically assume that if there is a chill in the air, there will likely be ice, SO please… slow down and avoid a car accident.” I know a lot of this seems obvious and maybe even repetitive.  It never hurts to remind everyone to slow it down because goodness knows we are all always rushing around from one thing to the next…

Ottawa personal injury lawyer reports on Ottawa ski accident that results in death.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth -I am so upset to report that another fatal ski accident has occurred in the Ottawa area. Sadly, today, an 11-year-old girl on a school ski trip was killed when she hit a tree at Calabogie Peaks Resort. Eventhough the girl was wearing a helmet, she still suffered critical personal injury. Paramedics attempted to save her before she was airlifted to CHEO, where she succumbed to her personal injury. My thoughts are with the family of this young girl at this extremely sad time. What a tragedy. For more information, visit www.ottawainjury.ca

–David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer

Late this morning, an Ottawa garbage truck was involved in an accident with a car. The impact from the garbage truck was so hard, that it turned the truck on it’s side and ended up demolishing the car by splitting it in half. 3 people were sent to an Ottawa hospital, which includes a baby. The Ottawa accident occurred close to the intersection of Hunt Club and Conroy Road. The driver of the truck was sent to an Ottawa hospital with a head and neck. He is currently in serious, but thankfully stable condition. The driver of the car remains in serious condition in an Ottawa hospital. She is being treated for a fractured pelvis, fractured leg, as well as internal injury. Her baby (3 months) was treated for an abrasion to her forehead and is currently under assessment and observation. Thank goodness, she was properly positioned in her car seat.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth : Most of you have probably heard by now the very sad news about Rene Faucher. If you haven’t a few weeks ago, he caught a rut in the ice at the University of Ottawa and went head first into the boards at a pick up hockey game. University of Ottawa: accidents -Lawyer in Ottawa shares report.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer – Ottawa Accident Lawyers- David Hollingsworth -

I have come across many interesting studies over the years, related to the idea of “illusory superiority” or how most drivers generally feel, consciously or unconsciously, that they are somehow “superior behind the wheel”. This reinforces the need for safe driving practices and especially caution when on the road with aggressive drivers. The idea of “defensive driving” has also been branded in recent years to promote driving to save lives, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.

Safe Driving in Ottawa: A study at the University of Ottawa polling almost 400 drivers has produced some interesting results. The drivers ranged from the “new” to “experienced” drivers, all of whom rated themselves favourably—as you would expect given the concept of “illusory superiority”. The study confirms the idea that there is a sense of bravado out there on the roads, and I conjecture that this is an important cause of numerous unnecessary injuries in our province due to auto accidents. The problem is that drivers seem to be underestimating their own risk and overestimating their abilities, producing less cautious drivers on the road.

What to do:

The first step to handling a problem is addressing the problem itself. Countless children, grandparents, and innocent victims die or are seriously injured due to auto accidents each year and I feel that we need to have a consciousness shift in our society in order to deal with this serious and tragic phenomena. If we begin to realize that illusory superiority is a real area of concern, and we can produce skills to counteract this psychology, then we can decrease accident numbers and save lives. So are you less risky and more skill-full than your fellow drivers? Perhaps, but please reflect upon this note, and most important of all, drive safe and take care of yourself.
