Ottawa neurosurgeon Dr. Vassilyadi and child head injury, study calls for new helmet
Ottawa Head Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Brain Injury Attorneys….Ottawa-based neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Vassilyadi has conducted a research that shows hockey helmets are the most effective at protecting children and preventing serious head injury to children tobogganing. The experiment conducted by Dr. Michael Vassilyadi, the neurosurgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and also a professor at the University of Ottawa, tested helmets designed for hockey, downhill skiing and cycling. Dr. Vassilyadi and his Ottawa team simulated the potential impact that might occur while tobogganing. The findings were amazing. Hockey helmets were determined to be the safest, over bicycle helmets. This is especially true if the hockey helmet has a face shield guard. Dr . Vassilyadi noted that often times, when a child suffers a tobogganing injury, they often have facial injuries such as torn lips, broken teeth, broken nose, or eye injuries.
The bottom line is that any helmet is better than none for tobogganing. So if you can’t have access to a hockey helmet, then please grab whatever helmet you have when you take your kids out tobogganing. As an Ontario personal injury lawyer who has had many clients with severe head injuries, I am in complete agreement with Dr. Vassilyadi and support is desire to see a helmet created for outdoor winter activities such as tobogganing and skating. It really does seem crazy not to.
Dr Vassilyadi explained that collisions in tobogganing are usually to the front of the head, whereas ski accidents usually involve impacts to the side of the head, where ski helmets were the most effective. Again this just goes to show that there is a need for a specific helmet to be designed for tobogganing , as there is currently no helmet specifically designed to protect the front of the head on impact.
All this to say, do everything you can to keep your little one’s (and yourself) safe. Take every safety step you can. A child brain injury or head injury is life altering. Enjoy this winter and all it’s wonderful activities, but please be safe.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth:What are income replacement benefits ( IRB ) ?
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Accident Benefits Insurance Claims, Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Personal Injury Claims on January 10th, 2012
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ontario Injury Lawyers, Income Replacement Benefits..Often times after suffering a personal injury in a motor vehicle accident you may not be able to return to work right away. You also may not be able to provide for yourself and your family. Depending on the severity of your personal injuries, you may not be able to work for a few days, maybe a few months or perhaps even longer. This is very stressful and this is where income replacement benefits comes in.
What are Income Replacement Benefits?
Income Replacement benefits are available to Ontario personal injury victims who were employed or self employed at the time of the motor vehicle accident in Ontario and who, as a result of the personal injuries sustained in the Ontario accident, “suffer a substantial inability to perform the essential tasks of their employment”. This is the definition that applies for the first 2 years following a car accident in Ontario.
Following 2 years after an Ontario accident, it changes and becomes much more difficult to qualify for income replacement benefits. To continue to qualify for income replacement benefits, Ontario accident victims must have “a complete inability to engage in any employment or self-employment for which they are reasonably suited by education, training or experience.”
How much do Ontario accident victims get for Income Replacement Benefits?
The amount of income replacement benefits received depends on a number of different factors such as one’s income before the accident. As well as whether or not you opted to purchase additional accident benefits.
- For motor vehicle accidents occurring after September 1, 2010, the amount of the weekly income replacement benefits is based on 70% of your gross weekly income before the accident, subject to the maximum amounts.
- Under the standard accident benefits limits, the maximum weekly amount payable for the first 2 years following the accident in Ontario is $400 per week
- No income replacement benefits are payable in the first 7 days following an Ontario accident
- Optional accident benefits limits increase the maximum weekly amount to $600, $800 or $1,000 per week
How to apply for income replacement benefits…
In order to receive income replacement benefits, Ontario accident victims need to submit a completed
- OCF-10 Election of Income Replacement, Non-Earner or Caregiver Benefit
- OCF-3 Disability Certificate
- OCF-2 Employer’s Confirmation
If you have been involved in an Ontario car accident and are unable to work, you most likely qualify for income replacement benefits. It is important that before you fill out the associated accident benefits forms that you contact an experienced Ontario personal injury lawyer . The best Ontario personal injury lawyers not only will help you fill out these forms, they will ensure that it is done in a manner that gets you maximum benefits support.

Kanata Accident : Ottawa weather and icy roads results in serious personal injury.
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Accident Benefits Insurance Claims, Ottawa Car Accidents, Ottawa Injury and Accidents on December 29th, 2011
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth.. Wow, it was absolutely freezing out there today in Ottawa and the ice on Ottawa’s roads was deceiving. Ottawa’s icy roads caused three Kanata accidents within 15 minutes today. One of the Kanata accidents involved a driver being extricated from his vehicle after an accident with a snow plow at the intersection of Campeau Drive and March Road this morning. Ottawa Firefighters responded to the accident at 10:31 a.m., by removing the passenger’s car door to access the driver who was treated for serious personal injury and transported to an Ottawa hospital by Ottawa paramedics. The driver of the plow did not appear to be injured.
Ottawa Fire crews also responded to 2 other Kanata accidents this morning. A 3 vehicle accident at the intersection of Robertson Road and Eagleson Road seriously injured one male driver and he was treated and transported to an Ottawa hospital by Ottawa paramedics. One of the three vehicles in the crash was a police car, but thankfully the officer did appear to suffer personal injury. The third Ottawa accident involved a minivan and a passenger car crashed on Hazeldean Road near Young Road in Katimavik around the same time, but thankfully there was no personal injury.
Please take care out there on our Ottawa roads. Take extra care when driving during this cold winter weather. Cold temperatures create black ice conditions and icy roads that often don’t look slippery. Drive safely.

Ontario snowmobile accidents and safety hand signals: Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth
| Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ontario Personal Injury Lawyers David Hollingsworth…With all this new white fluffy snow we have in Ontario, I know that avid snowmobilers will be out on their snowmobiles this weekend and for the rest of the winter season. There are an incredible amount of Ontario snowmobile accidents each year and I cam across some great information posted on snowmobilers.org website. It’s a great site that shares all sorts of valuable information for snowmobile driving in Ontario. Please, if you are driving a snowmobile, drive the speed limit, stay off of questionable ice and never drive if you have been drinking. Most of all, enjoy the season safely ! Snowmobile hand signals: Giving clear, easy-to-see hand signals are so important to safe snowmobile riding in Ontario. Be sure to never make hand signals subtle, always make clear, deliberate signals. Be sure that other snowmobile drivers behind you can see your signals. Hand signals are a very reliable way to communicate while riding. |
