Hockey : Children Brain Injury and Head Injury Concussions in children

Ottawa personal injury lawyer, Ontario personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth.  I am currently at my son’s hockey tournament in Alliston , Ontario.  These 8 year old kids are giving it their all and playing with heart.  I love watching them play hockey.  I thought it would be timely to remind everyone about hockey and concussions in children. I also wanted to remind everyone with a child is out there on the ice,  please make sure they are wearing a proper CSA approved helmet, not just the helmet that is lying around in the garage. Most of all, play safe and have fun….

Hockey is one of Canada’s most popular sports, with over 520,000 players registered in the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA) for the 2000-2001 season. The incidence of hockey-related injuries amongst children between the ages of 9 to 14 leading to emergency department visits more than doubled between since 1990.The injury incidence among teens aged 15 to 18 didn’t increase as much as that of younger children, but still grew 85 % during the same time period.

Where do injuries most often occur?

42% – head and face

27% – upper body
31% – lower body

Who gets injured?

 Defense 33% Forwards 63% Goalie 4%.

The Children’s hospital of Eastern Ontario’s website is an excellent resource for signs and symptoms of concussions.  The following inforamation is from this site: Concussions can cause a variety of symptoms, which can appear several hours after the incident. Signs and symptoms of a concussion include:

  • Confusion (your child might not know where he is or the period of the game)
  • Memory problems (forgetting what happened before or after the injury)
  • Loss of consciousness (being “knocked out”)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness/feeling dazed
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Vision problems/staring blankly/seeing stars
  • Slurred speech
  • Unusual emotions, personality change, inappropriate behaviour

There are different kinds of concussions and some may be more serious than others.

Simple concussions

  • Symptoms last less than 15 minutes after the injury.
  • Child/teen should not return to playing hockey or other sports for at least one week.

Complex concussions
Symptoms last longer than 15 minutes after the injury.

  • Symptoms return with exercise.
  • The child/teen has been knocked out.
  • Longer recovery time. Several weeks or even months before returning to playing hockey or other sports.

Again, enjoy hockey ! It is a wonderful sport.  Please be safe out there and parents be on the look out if your child does fall or you suspect they have hit their head.

Ottawa pedestrian accident results in serious head injury, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Head Injury…A woman faces a charge of careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act after she struck an Ottawa pedestrian at Bronson and Sunnyside avenues Monday evening. The Ottawa pedestrian, a 30-year-old woman, was taken to an Ottawa hospital in very critical condition. The Ottawa Police reported that another vehicle was travelling south on Bronson just before Sunnyside Avenue. The vehicle abruptly turned to the right and hit the van, causing it to hit the Ottawa pedestrian. Emergency crews responded to the call at about 8:15 that evening. Ottawa Paramedics reported that several bystanders provided first aid by immobilizing the woman’s head and neck until they arrived at the Ottawa accident scene.  The Ottawa woman suffered serious injuries to her left side and a serious head injury. My thoughts go out to the friends and family of this woman. I wish her a full recovery.

Ontario Brain Injury , Ottawa Head Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Brain Injury Lawyer, Ontario Head Injury Lawyers: As an eastern Ontario brain injury lawyer, I continue to be shocked at the brain injury statistics that come out each year as most brain injuries are preventable.  A Brain Injury is an invisible personal injury, unlike a cut or a bruise. A brain injury is a catastrophic injury and trauma to the brain is not visible. Often times  victims of a brain injury or head injury appear to be uninjured and go about their lives. However; often times someone with a brain injury is suffering and is not showing it. Typically friends, family members, co-workers and employers start to notice small changes…The incidence of brain injury is high in Canada:

Brain injury from trauma  occurs every 500 out of 100,000 individuals yearly.

Brain Injury outnumbers  breast cancer, spinal cord injury and HIV/AIDS.

It is estimated that there are some 27,000 children with Acquired Brain Injuries in Ontario schools.

  • people who wear helmets suffer fewer injuries rates (an average of 25% lower) .

  • Bicycle injuries are one of the leading causes of injury for children ages 10-14 years old, and traumatic brain injuries account for close to one third (29%) of all cycling-related hospital admissions.
  • Research shows that 20% of people in psychiatric settings appear to have a history of brain injury.
  • Helmets use reduces brain injury by 88%.

Each year, 50,000 Canadians suffer an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). In Ontario, 44 people sustain a brain injury daily.

  • Close to 500 000 people in Ontario are living with an acquired brain injury.

795 children out of 100,000 individuals suffer a brain injury each year

456 people suffer a brain injury daily in Canada — this amounts to one person injured every 3 minutes.

Most brain injury occur in males aged 16 to 24.

Brain injury from trauma is the greatest killer under the age of 45;

the greatest cause of disability under 44;

and kills more children under 20 than all other causes combined

As an Ontario brain injury lawyer and one of the top Ottawa brain injury lawyers, I urge everyone out there to slow down, buckle up, put a helmet on ,be alert and be safe out there.  A brain injury is life altering and can happen to anyone in an instant.

Summer Cycling Safety Tips with Ottawa Bicyle Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Bicycle Accident Lawyer, Cycling Accidents Ottawa .We all want to be out on our bicycles cycling around Ottawa.  There is much to see and do and getting out on a bicycle is one of the best ways of seeing our city. Of course, it is part of a healthy lifestyle, but bicycling also helps the environment. It’s important, as a cyclist in Ottawa, to be always be aware of your surroundings. Make sure your are visible and take all necessary safety precautions. As an Ottawa bicycle accident lawyer, I meet regularly with people involved in bicycle accidents who suffer very serious personal injury such as brain injury, head injury and broken bones.

In 2009, according to Transport Canada,  there were a total of 41 bicycle accident fatalities, and 435 serious personal injuries related to bicycle accidents. the Canada Safety Council recommends for all bicyclists to wear an approved bicycle helmet, which can prevent up to 88 % of brain injuries. Simply put: A bicycle helmet can save your life, so why wouldn’t you wear one? There are many bicycle safety measures you can take to help keep yourself and your children safe:

1. Always wear a helmet.

2. Pay attention and avoid distractions.

3. Obey the laws and road safety rules.  Cyclists have the same rights and duties as other drivers and need to follow the same traffic laws.

4. Be predictable — ride in a straight line, don’t swerve over sewers or bumps in the road, this will increase your chances of a collision with a vehicle.

5. Properly signal all turns and check behind you before completing a turn or changing lanes.

6. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights.

7. Stay visible. Be careful around parked cars and ride where drivers can see you.

8. Use lights at night and wear bright coloured clothing.

9. Be alert -Try to watch for the next move of drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists.

10. Watch for debris, potholes, grates or any road obstacles.

11. Make sure your bicycle is in good working order. Make sure your tires don’t need air, brakes must work, chains should run smoothly, and quick release wheel levers must be closed.

As a driver, there are many steps you can take to avoid a bicycle accident

1. Respect cyclists’ right to share the road and responsibilities as motorists.

2. Obey the speed limits.

3. Come to a complete stop at  stop signs and red lights.

4. Do shoulder checks, and always check blind spots for cyclist.

5. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and bicycles.

6. Yield to pedestrians and cyclists in crossways.

7. If you plan to turn right or pull into a parking space shortly ahead of a bicycle in front of you, do not pass. Allow the cyclist to pass first.

8. Signal all turns and lane changes well 30 in advance.

10. Only pass cyclists when it is safe to do so.

These cycling safety tips may seem basic but serve as a great reminder to us all.  Ottawa is a wonderful city to cycle in, let’s keep it safe ! We all need to focus more on cycling safety.  There are far too many very serious head injuries and other very serious personal injuries in Ottawa each year as the result of an Ottawa bicycle accidents.  As one of the top Ottawa bicycle accident lawyers, I encourage everyone to have a safe and accident free summer.
