Ottawa accident Colonel By drive results in serious head injury.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer..An eldrely 83-year-old dog walker was hit by a vehicle on Colonel By Drive near Dow’s Lake yesterday morning. Ottawa paramedics treated the elderly man for a serious head injury. The dog was not hurt. The elderly man was conscious when Ottawa paramedics arrived but drivers who came to the man’s assistance said he had been unresponsive until moments before. The elderly Ottawa man was in serious condition yesterday afternoon in an Ottawa hospital. My thoughts go out to this man, his friends and family. It’s a tough time of year not to have your loved ones at home with you.

The World Health Organization found that injuries—both intentional and unintentional—accounted for 16% of the global burden of disease in 1998. In Canada and the United States, injuries are the leading cause of death for those age 1 to 44. Increasingly, trauma is being recognized as a global public health concern. At the same time, trauma injuries are considered one of the most avoidable health problems: an estimated 90% are preventable.     Motor vehicle collisions were the leading cause of major injury hospitalizations with a total of 1,654 accounting for 30% of major injury in-hospital deaths. Among these cases, 56%were drivers, 19%  were pedestrians and 17% were passengers. Following motor vehicle collisions, unintentional falls represented the second most common cause of major hospitalizations (38%,) and the leading cause of in-hospital deaths (50%). Among the 1,604 cases injured in unintentional falls, the most commonly specified types were falls on or from stairs or steps (22%) and falls from slipping, tripping and stumbling (21%). information from : Ontario Trauma Registry 2011 Report: Major Injury in Ontario, 2009–2010 Data

In 2009–2010, there were 4,235 cases hospitalized with major trauma in 11 participating facilities across 14 sites in Ontario. This represents an increase of 2.2% compared with 2005–2006, and an average annual increase of 0.44% from 2005–2006 to 2009–2010.

In 2009–2010, these major trauma cases accounted for 61,523 days in the participating facilities. Most (71%) of these cases were male, and the average age of all cases was 48 years. The average age of patients increased slightly over the last five years, from a low of 45 in 2005–2006 to 48 in 2009–2010. Of the 4,235 cases, 13% died in emergency departments. The number of in-hospital deaths remained stable from 2005–2006 to 2009–2010, ranging from 10% to 11% over the last five years. The number of DIEs decreased by 37% since 2005–2006, with an average annual decrease of 8%.

Analysis of the causes of injury by age groups revealed that motor vehicle collisions and falls were the leading two causes in all age groups, with the exception of cases age 20 to 34. Although motor vehicle collisions were responsible for the majority (53%) of cases in this age group, the second most common cause of injury was injury purposely inflicted by another person (21%).

Hockey : Children Brain Injury and Head Injury Concussions in children

Ottawa personal injury lawyer, Ontario personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth.  I am currently at my son’s hockey tournament in Alliston , Ontario.  These 8 year old kids are giving it their all and playing with heart.  I love watching them play hockey.  I thought it would be timely to remind everyone about hockey and concussions in children. I also wanted to remind everyone with a child is out there on the ice,  please make sure they are wearing a proper CSA approved helmet, not just the helmet that is lying around in the garage. Most of all, play safe and have fun….

Hockey is one of Canada’s most popular sports, with over 520,000 players registered in the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA) for the 2000-2001 season. The incidence of hockey-related injuries amongst children between the ages of 9 to 14 leading to emergency department visits more than doubled between since 1990.The injury incidence among teens aged 15 to 18 didn’t increase as much as that of younger children, but still grew 85 % during the same time period.

Where do injuries most often occur?

42% – head and face

27% – upper body
31% – lower body

Who gets injured?

 Defense 33% Forwards 63% Goalie 4%.

The Children’s hospital of Eastern Ontario’s website is an excellent resource for signs and symptoms of concussions.  The following inforamation is from this site: Concussions can cause a variety of symptoms, which can appear several hours after the incident. Signs and symptoms of a concussion include:

  • Confusion (your child might not know where he is or the period of the game)
  • Memory problems (forgetting what happened before or after the injury)
  • Loss of consciousness (being “knocked out”)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness/feeling dazed
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Vision problems/staring blankly/seeing stars
  • Slurred speech
  • Unusual emotions, personality change, inappropriate behaviour

There are different kinds of concussions and some may be more serious than others.

Simple concussions

  • Symptoms last less than 15 minutes after the injury.
  • Child/teen should not return to playing hockey or other sports for at least one week.

Complex concussions
Symptoms last longer than 15 minutes after the injury.

  • Symptoms return with exercise.
  • The child/teen has been knocked out.
  • Longer recovery time. Several weeks or even months before returning to playing hockey or other sports.

Again, enjoy hockey ! It is a wonderful sport.  Please be safe out there and parents be on the look out if your child does fall or you suspect they have hit their head.

Ottawa pedestrian accident results in serious head injury, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Head Injury…A woman faces a charge of careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act after she struck an Ottawa pedestrian at Bronson and Sunnyside avenues Monday evening. The Ottawa pedestrian, a 30-year-old woman, was taken to an Ottawa hospital in very critical condition. The Ottawa Police reported that another vehicle was travelling south on Bronson just before Sunnyside Avenue. The vehicle abruptly turned to the right and hit the van, causing it to hit the Ottawa pedestrian. Emergency crews responded to the call at about 8:15 that evening. Ottawa Paramedics reported that several bystanders provided first aid by immobilizing the woman’s head and neck until they arrived at the Ottawa accident scene.  The Ottawa woman suffered serious injuries to her left side and a serious head injury. My thoughts go out to the friends and family of this woman. I wish her a full recovery.

While many minor disputes can be handled in a small claims court or through an alternative dispute resolution, handling a claim for a personal injury as serious as traumatic brain injury requires the expertise and know-how of an Ottawa brain injury lawyer.  When you hire an Ottawa brain injury lawyer, you need to find someone who understands the nuances of your brain injury and has extensive experience interpreting medical diagnoses in order to present the full facts of your brain injury to your insurance adjuster or in the courtroom.

A brain injury is a very complicated legal matter because the symptoms are often “invisible.”  This is especially the case when it comes to a mild brain injury.  The vocational abilities of victims who have sustained a mild brain injuries are often severely impacted.  Victims are typically in denial about a brain injury’s impact on their lives.

Many survivors of a traumatic brain injury do not receive adequate compensation for their brain injury primarily because they hire an Ottawa brain injury lawyer who does not have the sufficient experience to present a legitimate claim for damages.   Ask your Ottawa brain injury lawyer about previous brain injury cases they have taken on. Some Ottawa brain injury lawyers are willing to represent you on a contingency fee basis.  This means that the lawyer will not receive payment until you receive compensation for your brain injury.  When working on a contingency fee basis, an Ottawa brain injury lawyer receives a  % of the compensation amount.
