Ottawa Accident March Road Results with Young Girl Critical Personal Injuries

Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth..Regrettably, I am  reporting that a young girl remains at CHEO tonight with very serious, life threatening personal injury as a result of an Ottawa accident earlier this morning.   My  thoughts are with her family and friends at this very difficult time.  Ottawa police have pleaded to the Ottawa commmunity for help in trying to figure out what happenned to this young girl.   A 16 year old girl  has been taken to hospital with life-threatening personal injuries after an accident at March Road near Highway 417 Sunday morning. Police said the 17-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle, whose driver lost control and hit a tree in the area of March and Thomas Argue roads at about 1:25 a.m.  Thankfully, 3 other passengers, did not suffer personal injury.  The young girl was airlifted to CHEO where she remains in critical condition.  My thoughts go out to her and I hope to soon report of her full recovery.

update:

OTTAWA — A 17-year-old male has been charged with careless driving and driving with a blood alcohol level above zero after a car crashed into tree Sunday morning, police said. A 17-year-old girl was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after an accident at March Road near Highway 417 around 1:25 a.m. She was airlifted to CHEO in critical condition.

I am relieved to report that this young girl’s condition has improved; although she still has a long way to go…Police said her condition has been downgraded from life-threatening to stable condition.

Police have charged the 17-year-old driver with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act. The youth was also charged with driving with a blood alcohol level above zero. New legislation, which came into effect in July, requires young drivers to be alcohol-free when they get behind the wheel.

Ottawa Accident, Rugby players survive with personal injuries: head injury and other serious injury

Ottawa Car Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyers..I’m happy to report that these young men seem to be doing better after their accident in Ottawa yesteday.  I wish them all a full and healthy recovery….Ottawa Ontario Personal Injury Lawyer

The Ottawa Citizen reported that 5 young Ottawa Irish Rugby Club players who were rushed to hospital yesterday — including a 15-year-old in critical condition — after their SUV rolled over on Ottawa’s Moodie Drive have been released from Ottawa hospital and are recovering at home. “They’re in good spirits,” said Tim Powers, an executive member of the Ottawa Irish Rugby Club. The accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. just north of Cambrian Drive. Five players were riding home to the Rockland area in a Chevrolet Suburban, driven by their coach, from a Saturday afternoon match at Twin Elm Park when the SUV rolled over. Police are still investigating the cause. An 18-year-old passenger sustained back injuries and a puncture wound to his stomach and was taken to hospital in serious condition. A 19-year-old and 15-year-old were both taken to hospital in stable condition. The 23-year-old male driver, who is a former Ottawa Irish player, and other passenger were treated on scene and released. The most seriously injured was another 15-year-old sitting on the front passenger side, which took the brunt of the impact. He sustained a critical head injury, a serious shoulder injury, and significant blood loss. He was transported to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. He had about 48 stitches, Powers said, but still can’t wait to get back on the field.“He told the club president when he got home that he’ll be back out there by Tuesday,” Powers said. “I think the doctors might disagree with him on the time but it just shows that these boys are doing well.” The rugby season continues on until early November. Powers said it’s unsure whether all the players will return this season but they will make full recoveries.

Tragic Ottawa bicycle accident results in cyclist’s death, Ottawa attorney David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Bicycle Accident Lawyer, Ontario Cycing Accident Lawyer.  I am sorry to report of this tragic Ottawa bicycle accident. My thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased victim. Tragically, a 53-year-old male Ottawa cyclist is dead after a tragic car crash with a black Chevrolet Tracker in the city’s west end around 7:00 a.m. this morning. The driver of the SUV in the fatal accident in the Britannia area was traumatized immediately after the accident, her husband said. “She never saw him coming,” Terry Orchard told Ottawacitizen.com. “The cyclist came up quite fast from behind to pass her.” Orchard said his wife, Aldenia, was turning right onto Boyce Avenue when the cyclist went under SUV. It was too late by the time she saw him, said Orchard, a StatsCan employee and pastor of new Baptist church in Britannia. “She tried to avoid him. It’s hard to avoid. He went underneath the car.” Boyce Av. resident Anna Nagy said she is surprised the accident happened on Boyce because it is a very quiet dead-end street. However, Les Buckley, another Boyce resident said there has been a recent influx of cyclists who are avoiding construction on the bike path that runs past the end of the street beside the Ottawa River. Fire crews on the scene discovered the cyclist trapped under the SUV and worked to free him by using air bags. Paramedics treated and transported the patient to hospital accompanied by a firefighter who assisted with CPR on route to hospital. The cyclist was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at hospital. Police, who have not yet released the name of either the driver or the cyclist, are currently investigating and have closed Boyce Avenue between Carling Avenue and Walter Street. The intersection has been closed off with yellow tape and orange pilons mark the spot where the cyclist went down. They are asking commuters to please avoid the area. Orchard says bike paths along the south side of the Ottawa River Parkway are closed in the area and many cyclists are now instead riding on the residential streets through the Britannia area. “Some of them are going as fast as they would on the bike paths,” he said. Ottawa motorcyle accident results in death, neck injury and back injury

OTTAWA Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth- My thoughts go out to Mr. Laguë’s family and friends. I am truly sorry fo your loss.  Sadly, 52-year old, Mario Laguë, died after his motorcycle was in an Ottawa car accident with  an SUV  near Tunney’s Pasture this morning at 7:00am, according to the Ottawa Paramedic Service. Mr. Laguë was the communications director for federal Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff.   He leaves behind a wife and children.

The Ottawa accident happened at Scott Street at Parkdale Avenue. Ottawa Police have closed off Scott Street at Parkdale, Holland, Pinehurst and Lindale streets and are requesting drivers please avoid this area. The motorcyclist sustained head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital and treated for neck and back injury. Neck and back injuries may have serious life long implications.  I also wish the driver a full and speedy recovery.

                                                                                                        Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth

From the Globe and Mail:

“A man of many talents and accomplishments, Mario was a beloved member of our staff, and a valued personal advisor to me and the entire Liberal team,” Mr. Ignatieff said in a statement. “A man of great integrity and spirit, Mario served his country in many capacities with honour and dignity. … [He] brought a bright light to everything he did.”

Mr. Laguë joined Mr. Ignatieff’s office this year. He was brought in by Peter Donolo, Mr. Ignatieff’s chief of staff, and was part of the team Mr. Donolo built around the leader to try to improve his image. The new team took over in January.

Last week, Mr. Laguë joked with a reporter during lunch that he had just taken up driving a motorcycle as part of his “mid-life crisis.” He had mentioned he had gone on a motorcycle trip this summer to the Eastern Townships.

“While we will miss Mario’s extensive talents, we will miss most of all his warmth, his humour, and his passion for Canada that inspired us all,” Mr. Ignatieff said.

Liberal foreign affairs critic Bob Rae cancelled a press conference he had scheduled in Ottawa Thursday morning because of the tragedy. Later, he posted his thoughts on Facebook.

“We are all mourning the terrible loss of Mario Laguë, OLO communications director, killed in a motorcycle accident this morning. This is such sad and devastating news. A wonderful man.”

Mr. Laguë came over to Mr. Ignatieff’s office with immense experience. He had been working at an NGO in Switzerland but before that had served as Canada’s ambassador to Costa Rica.

As well, he had been director of communications to former prime minister Paul Martin and before that served in one of the most senior communications roles in the Privy Council Office.

Tall, big and sporting a dark beard, Mr. Laguë was distinctive on Parliament Hill. Well-liked by his colleagues and the press, he had a big hand in Mr. Ignatieff’s thinkers’ conference in Montreal this spring and in putting together the Liberal Express summer bus tour.

Mr. Laguë accompanied Mr. Ignatieff on the first week of that tour, when the bus broke down, and handled all of it with aplomb. He also traveled with him on the Quebec leg of the tour.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, loved ones and the many, many friends and colleagues that knew him,” Mr. Ignatieff said.

Update Prime Minister Stephen Harper also offered his condolences. Here is the text of his statement:

I was very saddened to learn of the sudden and tragic passing today of Mario Laguë, Director of Communications for the Leader of the Opposition.

Throughout a varied and distinguished career, Mr. Laguë served his country with dedication both in Canada and abroad. His numerous roles included serving as Prime Minister Paul Martin’s Director of Communications, as Quebec’s Delegate in Venezuela and in Mexico, as Canada’s Ambassador to Costa Rica, and as Assistant Secretary to Cabinet – Communications and Consultations in the Privy Council Office.

Mr. Laguë will be greatly missed by those who knew him personally and who worked with him throughout his career. His devotion and service to his country are his legacy.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in their time of grief.

Another update New Democratic Party Leader Jack Layton’s joined in and offered the following:

I was deeply saddened this morning to learn of the sudden death of Mario Laguë, Director of Communications to Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. On behalf of all New Democrats, I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathies to Mr. Laguë’s family, friends and colleagues.

Beneath the political fault lines that we find ourselves negotiating each day, there is a foundation of deep respect among those who devote their lives to public service. No matter what political stripes we may wear, we all feel this loss profoundly.

Mr. Laguë was a man of gentle strength who devoted decades to building a better country. We admire the consistent integrity he brought to his work, whether he was advising a Quebec premier or Canadian prime minister, or representing us all overseas as a Canadian ambassador.

We reserve a special place in our hearts today for Mr. Lague’s wife and two children. I know so well that a political career is always a full-family endeavor. They too have given much. And as we mourn with them today, we do so as extended family.

Ontario Driving Safety Tips: Ottawa Car Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth

I came across this information on the Canadian Safety Council Website and thought I would share it with you.  Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Personal Injury Lawyer for Eastern Ontario…More fatalities occur on Canadian roads during the summer months than at any other time of year, including the winter holiday season. Alcohol, fatigue and aggressive driving are often implicated in these tragedies. Whether you’re out for a day trip, travelling to the cottage or on a cross-country holiday, the Canada Safety Council urges all Canadians to put safety first when you set out on your summer travels.

Prepare your vehicle

Before leaving on vacation, have your vehicle checked to make sure everything is working properly. Repair or replace worn parts to avoid the worry and time-consuming costly repairs that could ruin your trip. Check fluid levels and tire pressure. Make sure all lights work, including signal lights.

Keep your passengers safe

Make sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled up properly at all times. Buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to keep yourself and your passengers safe while on the road.

If you are travelling with young children, make sure to make regular stops. Bring plenty of items to keep them occupied. Special travel games and songs also help.

Drive defensively

Drive at a safe speed. Speeding increases the likelihood and severity of a crash. The faster a vehicle is moving, the less time the driver has to react to a hazard, and for other road users to react to that vehicle. A speeding vehicle requires more time and distance to stop. Leave plenty of distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead. Apply the three second rule so you can see around the car ahead and plan a manoeuvre to avoid potential dangers, add more time if you have a heavier vehicle, and in poor weather conditions.

The Canada Safety Council estimates that 85 per cent of collisions are preventable. But simply being in the right will not save you from injury or death. You must be prepared for the unsafe actions of other motorists or for poor driving conditions.

  • Obey all signs and signals, including speed limits, traffic lights, stop signs and railway crossings.
  • If you drive with a wireless phone, avoid unnecessary calls and always make the driving task your top priority.
  • Absolutely never drink and drive.

Stay alert

Canadians often travel long distances when they go on vacation. This creates a temptation to keep driving for extended periods even when tired. On top of this, routes can be quite monotonous, another factor that can make a driver sleepy. Get a good sleep before leaving on a long trip. Fatigue is a form of impairment; so don’t give in to that temptation to push on. If you started early, stop early. Rest stops are important. A break keeps the driver alert by promoting blood circulation, makes the trip more pleasant for passengers and lets the vehicle cool down.

Carrying a heavy load or towing a trailer

Before you tow a trailer or haul a load, make sure your vehicle is properly equipped for the job. Check your owner’s manual or if in doubt contact your vehicle dealer. Check that your rear view mirrors give a clear view of the road behind. Driving a heavily loaded car or towing a trailer means you need more space to stop or pass. Leave plenty of distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead. Keep your distance – at least three seconds for each six metres (20 ft.) of vehicle length. For conditions that are less than ideal, increase the following distance. If cars cut in front of you, drop back to keep your separation. When traveling slower than the flow of traffic, be courteous. Pull over where possible to let faster vehicles pass.

Share the road

With the warmer weather, comes the prevalence of vulnerable roads users. Motorists must be cautious of cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians. Always be on the lookout for and yield to vulnerable road users, even if they don’t have the right-of-way. Summer also brings increased construction on our roads and highways. Be prepared to stop or slow down in construction zones.

Drive safely and stay safe on the roads!

4 Ottawa  people suffered personal injury yesterday when an OC Transpo bus was rear-ended by a cement truck. The Ottawa accident occured at around 11:25 a.m. at the intersection St. Laurent Boulevard and Donald Street. At least 6 people were on the bus when the truck, full of cement, hit the bus. One passenger was treated for a fractured wrist (orthopedic injury), and the three others were treated for neck injury and back injuries. They were taken to hospital in stable condition.  Two other passengers were assessed by paramedics, but they were not treated for personal injury.  The drivers of the bus and cement truck also did not suffer personal injury.  The  personal injuries could have been worse considering the considerable damage to the back of the Ottawa bus. “There is some training the paramedics have in terms of looking at certain things, damage-wise, that would indicate the seriousness of that impact and if the passengers were wearing their seatbelt,”  said an Ottawa paramedic at the scene of the Ottawa accident. “When they arrived at scene, they thought that they were going to be dealing with a lot more serious personal injury.”
