Ottawa Law Firms- Ottawa Accident Lawyer – David Hollingsworth.

Avoiding an Ottawa Car Accident….We can expect a lot of rain this week in Ottawa. Although it’s good for the grass and the tulips, rain can be problematic on our roads. We are so use to driving defensively in winter conditions but it is important to keep in mind that rain and wet roads  can also be dangerous and  it never hurts to be reminded….

  • Drive  slowly ! Drive at rate of speed that suits the weather conditions;
  • Pay careful attention to the car ahead of you and your surroundings;
  • Keep a wider following distance; some drivers forget to signal at times causing an abrupt stop for the cars behind;
  • Try to avoid slamming on your brakes, this may cause your vehicle to skid and the roads are slick;
  • Visibility is already a problem, ensure your windows are properly defogged so you don’t add to this problem;
  • Ensure your windshield wipers are in working order and do not leave streaks; and
  • If it is dark ensure you are not over driving your headlights.

Ottawa car accidents occur frequently on rainy days because road conditions. Please drive safely out there Ottawa and avoid the chance of  an Ottawa car accident.

Ottawa Lawyers: Ottawa Police aim to reduce Ottawa accidents by targeting stop sign runners and speeding.

Ottawa Lawyers David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Law Firms….Ottawa Police will have stop sign runners and motorists who speed in construction zones on their radar during the Ottawa’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) this month. Disobeying stop signs – including rolling stops – is a serious issue on Ottawa roads and can contribute to the risk of Ottawa accidents.  In 2009, 1,667 Ottawa collisions at stop sign-controlled intersections resulted in one death and 462 personal injuries – 17 of them life-threatening and critical personal injuries. As for speeding in Ottawa construction zones, provincial legislation allows for the doubling of fines for Ontario motorists caught exceeding posted speed limits in construction zones when workers are present.  Ottawa Police will be applying this legislation with a zero tolerance approach this month. In Ottawa, between 2007 and 2009, 526 Ottawa accidents occurred in construction zones resulting in 114 personal injuries, eight of which were serious personal injuries.  One construction worker was actually struck and injured on the job by a motorist. In 2003, Public Works and Ottawa Public Health – and the Ottawa Police Service developed the IRSP to provide a comprehensive approach in promoting road safety in Ottawa.

 As an Ottawa accident lawyer serving eastern Ontario, I fully support the Ottawa police and this initiative that will hopefully reduce further personal injuries and Ottawa accidents.   Be safe out there !

Avoiding Ontario Accidents , Lawyer David Hollingsworth Shares Highway Driving Safety Tips

Ottawa Lawyers, Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth…Many of you will be heading out of town for this long weekend.  Whatever you may be celebrating this weekend, Passover, Easter, Ridvan etc…I want to wish everyone a safe and happy long weekend. If you are hitting Ontario highways, here are a few things to keep in mind to avoid a car accident in Ontario.

                                                                 -David Hollingsworth, Ontario Accident Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer

Avoiding Ontario Car Accidents: Follow Ontario Speed Limits…

For your safety and the safety of others, always obey the speed limit posted on Ontario highway signs along Ontario  roads and highways, but more importantly always drive  a speed that allows you stop safely.  Try to drive at the same speed as traffic surrounding you without going over the speed limit. In Ontario cities, towns, villages and suburb areas where there are no posted speed limit signs, the maximum speed is 50 km/h. Elsewhere the maximum speed limit is Ontario is 80 km/h.

Ontario Accidents: Highway Driving Safety Tips:

Slow down in bad weather, in heavy traffic or in a construction zone; Slow down at night, especially on dark roads; Always follow at a safe distance, at least 2 car lengths behind the vehicle in front of you.

If you are charged for speeding at 50 km/h over the speed limit, Ontario police will suspend your licence and impound your vehicle at the roadside. Please be careful when driving through Ontario construction areas.  To avoid an accident in Ontario, slow down when approaching work zones and be ready to stop at a seconds notice. Most importantly, be patient if there is traffic . If your lane is blocked , yield to the driver coming from the opposite direction. When it is clear, move slowly and carefully around the accident. Use common sense. Observing speed limits means more than obeying the posted speed: it means reacting to road conditions. When it’s raining or foggy, when ice is on the road, when traffic is heavy or when road construction is ahead, adjust your driving speed accordingly.

Ontario Car Accidents: Driving Safely on the Right….

Watch for signs on Ontario highways that read “Left Lane For Passing Only.” Slower Traffic Keep to Right: These signs let you know that the left lane on an Ontario highway is not a “fast” lane; it is a passing lane. If you pass someone, move into the right lane once you’ve safely cleared the vehicle. Slowing down the flow of traffic by continuing to drive in the left lane is not only dangerous but can result in a fine in Ontario.

Ontario Highways Accidents: Truck Accidents

Trucks can weigh close to 85,000 pounds and take extra time to stop. Drive cautiously on a highway that has several large trucks. Maintain a safe following distance. Don’t squeeze between trucks and the curb. Trucks make wide right turns, and the truck driver may not see you.When passing a truck, don’t move back into your lane until you can see both truck headlights in your rearview mirror. Make sure to give yourself enough room.  Trucks have blind spots of up to 20 feet in front of the tractor, anywhere along the sides of the trailer and up to 200 feet behind the trailer. Keep that in mind. Never drive behind a truck that is backing up.

Avoid Ontario Highway Accidents by Moving Over..

When you approach an emergency vehicle with  flashing lights, move a lane away , or slow down well  below the posted speed limit.

Some Ontario Highway Accidents Could be Avoided From Simply Resting…

It takes a split second to lose your focus. Maybe you can’t stop yawning?  Your thoughts wander or you’re drifting between lanes? You need to be alert !  Get plenty of rest before you hit Ontario highways. Get out of your vehicle and stretch your legs every so often. Take a break for 20 minutes at each stop. Yes, it will add time to your trip..but what is more important? Try to avoid driving between midnight and 6 a.m. Never  drink and drive -  small amounts of alcohol can impair your judgment and your reaction time.

Stop at Ontario Highway Rest Areas….

Take a break and advantage of the Ontario Highway Rest Areas and Ontario Information Centres. At most stops, you can get information on restaurants, road conditions, gas stations, snacks, area tourists stops etc…plus most often they have picnic tables and washrooms…a great place to stop for a packed lunch or snack.

Please, drive safely out there !!!

Ottawa Cycling Safety, Ottawa Bicycle Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa bicycle injury lawyer David Hollingsworth on bicycle safety.

The weather is still okay and many are out and about with their bicycles on our roads here in Ottawa.  Sadly, Ottawa bicycle accidents continue to occur and people are injured everyday day in our communities. There has been talk for years regarding the implementation of a “safe cycling educational” campaign or program here in Ottawa, but I think that we need to make progress more quickly. Consider the tragedies:

Just consider the serious injuries and deaths in the last little while here in Ottawa. This month, a 71-year-old cyclist fought for his life in hospital secondary to a collision with an automobile on Hawthorne Road. Alex Hayes, another tragic story, an innocent high school student,  killed by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. . Another tragedy involved a 48-year-old cyclist, killed due to head and neck injuries on Somerset St at night. John Barton, 53, another cyclist killed recently while on the road. And finally, 16-year-old Robin Freeman killed while cyclist after contact with a motorcycle (both motorcyclist and Freeman were killed).

 There are steps you can take to protect you and your loved ones from injury and death while bicycling. Overall, if you decide to cycle, make it a lifestyle decision. This means opening your mind to the requirements of bicycle culture and bicycle safety. Avoiding collisions with vehicles is never a guarantee, but you can take certain steps to reduce your chance of injury. For example, using a bicycle or helmet headlight, wearing protective and reflective clothing, and enhancing your bicycle can make you more visible. Buying a horn can give you the attention you need when you need it. Slow down and paying attention to your surroundings is key. Choosing wide, slower streets, and on weekends, back streets because they can be safer on Saturday and Sundays, for example, because of the increase in drunk vehicle traffic on main streets. You can’t control other people’s driving but please do everything you can to protect yourself.  Thanks for reading everyone, and please ride safely!

Regrettably, an 18-year-old girl is one of  3 people to die in holiday Monday crashes in eastern Ontario. Chi Hui Seo was one of  5 passengers in a minivan that collided head on with another vehicle on Highway 17 east of Pembroke at about 8 p.m. Police say the eastbound van crossed the centre line before slamming into the oncoming vehicle. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Also , sadly on Monday, a motorcycle driver died after an accident with a car at Royal Oak Court and Albion Road late last night. The 32-year-old man’s name has not been released. Again, to this family I am sorry for your loss…

OTTAWA Police have released the name of a 70-year-old woman from India who was killed in a single-car accident on Highway 401 near Cornwall on Monday. The woman, Vatsava Mohadas from Pune, India, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at about 3 p.m.  She was a passenger, along with two others, in a red Pontiac G6 being driven by 50-year-old Raja Jayaprakash of Ajax, ON. Ontario Provincial Police said they are investigating why Jayaprakash lost control, drove into the ditch and then struck a tree. The two other passengers, a male and female, were taken to Cornwall hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. To the Mohadas family, I am truly sorry for the loss of Vatsava..Please accept my condolences..
