Ottawa accident leaves woman in critical condition: Ottawa police need our help.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth …Ottawa Police need our help.  They are looking  for any witnesses to help in their investigation of an Ottawa accident  on Woodroffe avenue that left a pedestrian woman with critical injuries at the corner of Woodroffe Avenue and Iris Street during yesterday’s afternoon’s rush hour.

The 40-year-old woman remains in an Ottawa hospital in critical condition as a result of being struck and pinned beneath the City of Ottawa snow plow. Ottawa Police are trying to figure out how the terrible Ottawa accident happened and are looking for any help they can get. Ottawa paramedics said the woman suffered serious critical injuries, which included internal injuries and broken legs. She never regained consciousness between the time they treated her and when they rushed her to got her to the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus.

A passerby at the scene of the Ottawa accident called 911 and was instrumental in stopping traffic once she realised the woman was caught between the wheels of the  City of Ottawa’s salt truck.  As she came to the Ottawa accident scene , she noticed the driver was crouched down beside the injured woman, while another passerby came and stayed with the woman, holding her until Ottawa emergency crews arrived at the scene of the Ottawa accident.

My thoughts are with this woman and her family.  If you have any information at all that relates to this terrible Ottawa accident, please contact the Ottawa police .

Ottawa neurosurgeon Dr. Vassilyadi and child head injury, study calls for new helmet

Ottawa Head Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Brain Injury Attorneys….Ottawa-based neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Vassilyadi has conducted a research that shows hockey helmets are the most effective at protecting children and preventing serious head injury to children tobogganing. The experiment conducted by Dr. Michael Vassilyadi, the neurosurgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and also a professor at the University of Ottawa, tested helmets designed for hockey, downhill skiing and cycling. Dr. Vassilyadi and his Ottawa team simulated the  potential impact that might occur while tobogganing. The findings were amazing. Hockey helmets were determined to be the safest, over bicycle helmets. This is especially true if the hockey helmet has a face shield guard. Dr . Vassilyadi noted that often times, when a child suffers a tobogganing injury, they often have facial injuries such as torn lips, broken teeth,  broken nose, or eye injuries.

The bottom line is that any helmet is better than none for tobogganing. So if you can’t have access to a hockey helmet, then please grab whatever helmet you have when you take your kids out tobogganing.  As an Ontario personal injury lawyer who has had many clients with severe head injuries, I am in complete agreement with Dr. Vassilyadi and support is desire  to see a helmet created for outdoor winter activities such as tobogganing and skating. It really does seem crazy not to.

Dr Vassilyadi explained that collisions in tobogganing are usually to the front of the head, whereas ski accidents usually involve impacts to the side of the head, where ski helmets were the most effective. Again this just goes to show that there is a need for a specific helmet to be designed for tobogganing , as there is currently no helmet specifically designed to protect the front of the head on impact.

All this to say, do everything you can to keep your little one’s (and yourself) safe. Take every safety step you can.  A child brain injury or head injury is life altering. Enjoy this winter and all it’s wonderful activities, but please be safe.

Ottawa Rideau Canal Open : Skating Safety and Canal Conditions, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa : Personal Injury Lawyers in Ottawa, Ontario..David Hollingsworth

BBBBrrrrrrrr ! Well the forecast is -31 degrees celsius today.  That’s too cold for me to be outside.  This freezing cold weather does however allow for the Rideau canal to finally open. This is a great thing for Ottawa . The National Capital Commission opened the 42nd Rideau canal skating season of the world’s largest skating rink this morning. The 2.2 km section of the Rideau canal between the Bank Street Bridge and the Pretoria Bridge is open to all skaters.  A reminder to all skaters that a red flag flying at the canal means the ice conditions are not safe for any activity, including walking. I also recommend everyone wear a helmet; adults and children alike.

Safety on the Rideau Canal

  • Learn the flag system: A green flag means that the Skateway is open; a red flag means that it is closed.
  • Watch for cracks!
  • Consider your safety and that of others. The following are not permitted on the ice:
    • dogs
    • bikes
    • hockey sticks and pucks.
  • Warm up if you feel chilled. Heated chalets are located at various points along the Skateway.

When it comes to skates, a proper fitting lace-up single blade skates are required. The rule of thumb for purchasing skates is one size smaller than shoe size. New skates do not come sharpened and will require sharpening prior to the first class.

Also make sure you are dressed for the occasion. Wear warm, comfortable clothes that are easy to move in. For example, wear  warm, water-resistant pants, non-bulky jackets and warm gloves.

Enjoy this wonderful Rideau canal. We are so lucky here in Ottawa to have it. Please remember that safety is key to an enjoyable skate on Ottawa’s Rideau Canal and safety. As in any sport, accidents can happen. Do what you can to stay safe and most of all, enjoy !

Ottawa Frost Bite Warning In Effect: Be careful on slippery Ottawa roads and sidewalks: Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

The freezing rain and snow have finally stopped and now a deep cold is setting in throughout Ottawa and eastern Ontario.  Ottawa, Gatineau, Brockville, Cornwall and Smiths Falls were under a snowfall warning until late afternoon, with 15 centimetres or more expected throughout the day. A freezing rain warning was lifted that morning. There were over 60 Ottawa accidents yesterday and reports indicate that some Ottawa accident victims suffered minor injuries.  Police believe that this was due to the fact that Ottawa drivers were slowing down and driving cautiously.  Well done !  Not all accidents can be avoided but this just goes to show that if all drivers out there are driving very carefully we can reduce the number of Ottawa accidents that result in serious personal injury.  To all of you out there who took a little extra time to get to your destination, or drove a little more defensively, congratulations , you did a great job.

That being said, you job is not done.  There is a frost bite warning in effect in Ottawa. Dropping temperatures and increasing winds today will give us  a -28 C wind chill. This cold cold weather looks like it’s here to stay for the day and will be as lows hit -22 C this evening. Once you add  in the windchill factor and we’re looking at -27 C , according to Environment Canada. In other words, its coooooooooooolllllllldddddddddddddddd. My advice, stay in.  It is supposed to warm up a little tomorrow.  Unfortunately, our Ottawa roads and sidewalks will be slick and slippery. This will make it very challenging for Ottawa drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

I have to admit, as much as I would like to, I can’t stay in.  We will be out about shuffling our children from hockey rinks to swimming pools. My plan..slow and steady wins the race. We will get to where we need to be , then home for the SENS game..Go Sens go !  Please be safe out there today Ottawa.  Take your time, keep our Ottawa roads as accident free as possible. Have a great, safe weekend.

Ottawa and eastern Ontario freezing rain : Tips for driving in icy conditions, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyers, Ottawa Accident Lawyer…Listen up Ottawa ! A freezing rain warning issued by Environment Canada for Ottawa and parts of Eastern Ontario is expected to continue throughout tonight and into the morning. The freezing rain has contributed to over 50 reported car accidents in Ottawa today and is suspected to be a contributing factor to a serious accident on highway 401 this morning that partially closed highway 401 for close to 9 hours,  near Kingston. Leaving over 100 cars stuck for hours.

Many school boards have closed cancelled their busses. The Upper Canada District School Board cancelled all buses but schools remained open. The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario also cancelled all buses.

Ontario Provincial Police , Ottawa police and I are warning commuters to drive slowly on the icy roads in eastern Ontario. As an Ottawa personal injury lawyer, I also want to caution pedestrians to be careful while walking on Ottawa’s roads and sidewalks.  Cars may not be able to stop .Please keep your head up and be extra vigilant. Drivers need to also be aware that the sidewalks and roads are slippery and consequently be a lot more aware of pedestrians. The following are a few driving safety tips for driving in icy conditions.

  • If your car begins to slide on black ice, take your foot off the gas pedal. The last thing you want to do is give your car more gas. Slow down when you are driving on ice or in any winter conditions.
  • Don’t slam the brakes. Yes, it may be a natural instinct to slam on the brakes; however this will cause your vehicle to lose control and continue sliding. Pump your brake pedal gently instead of pushing down hard.
  • Look for dangerous trouble spots ahead. If you suspect that there is ice ahead, downshift to a lower gear before you hit the ice. The lower gear will allow you to drive more slowly and allow for better control of your vehicle.
