Ottawa Ontario Catastrophic Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth
A catastrophic injury is a life altering personal injury that usually often occurs suddenly and without warning. A catastrophic injury has live long implications, that usually become apparent years after the accident. Ontario accident victims with catastrophic injuries and their families often don’t know where to start. They have a long and difficult road ahead of them, not to mention an incredibly FULL plate. This is when they need an Ontario catastrophic injury lawyer most. A personal injury lawyer specializing in catastrophic injuries has the experience to take over and work at the getting the accident victim and their family the support, and compensation they need not only immediately but down the road. Most catastrophic injury victims are unable to return to work. The settlement amount awarded to catastrophic injury victims is often the only source of income; therefore it is so important to make sure that the Ontario personal injury lawyer that is hired is experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to catastrophic injury compensation in Ontario. For example, catastrophic injuries like brain injuries and spinal cord injuries are serious and complex personal injuries. Victims of catastrophic injuries need long-term medical care, and may never be able to work again. In addition to the physical pain and emotional pain of catastrophic injuries, the financial consequences are usually overwhelming. A personal injury claim can provide compensation for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering, along with other Ontario accident benefits.
What Types of Catastrophic Injuries Exist?
Catastrophic injuries include all types of injuries that occur suddenly and can cause long-term or permanent injury. It is common for catastrophic injuries to damage the central nervous system, which may in turn damage other bodily systems. Examples of catastrophic injuries are amputation or dismemberment injury, brain injury, eye injury, foot injury, multiple bone fractures, serious head trauma, severe burn injuries, and spinal cord injuries.
What are the Causes of Catastrophic Injuries ?
The most common causes of a catastrophic injury are motor vehicle accidents, construction accidents, and falls. A new report estimating the incidence and prevalence of spinal cord injury (SCI) in Canada has found that close to 86,000 Canadians are currently living with spinal cord injury and that an estimated 4,300 new cases of spinal cord injury occur in Canada each year, a baseline measurement of the extent of SCI in Canada that was previously unknown.
Of the current estimated 86,000 Canadians living with some form of SCI, 51% — or 44,000 —are living with SCI as a result of traumatic causes. It is estimated that of the 4,300 new cases of spinal cord injury in Canada each year, about 1,785 are as the result of traumatic injury from causes such as car accidents.
What are the Treatments for Catastrophic Injuries?
Proper medical attention is essential for all catastrophic injuries. Beyond initial medical care, accident victims often require frequent medical visits and follow-up surgeries, involvement with social workers, home modifications, attendant care, rehabilitation and much more. An experienced Ontario catastrophic injury lawyer will work with the accident victim’s professional team to ensure that they are getting everything needed for their clients best possible recovery. The top Ontario catastrophic injury lawyers will work with doctors, social workers, registered nurses, life care planners, and other medical experts to establish the extent of the victim’s injuries and determine their future medical and financial needs. Understanding the complete effects of a catastrophic injury is essential in ensuring an accident victim receives maximum compensation.
Catastrophic Injury Compensation and lawsuits -What is a catastrophic injury entitled to?
Showing the extent of a catastrophic injury can be challenging. Some catastrophic injuries such as a brain injury are “invisible”. Again, this is where the best Ontario personal injury lawyers are extremely valuable. Through experience, they know exactly what needs to be done to ensure that accident victims have all the proper medical experts and documentation to prove that maximum compensation is needed for a catastrophic injury. There are a number of areas that can be compensated such as medical treatment costs, lost wages, dependent care costs, and the pain and suffering a victim and their family endures throughout this extremely difficult time. The top Ontario catastrophic injury lawyers can make all the difference in the outcome of the financial future of an Ontario accident victim with a catastrophic injury.

Icy Ottawa Roads results in 35 Ottawa Car Accidents in the last 2 days: Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Car Accidents, Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Spinal Cord Injury, Personal Injury Claims on December 29th, 2010
OTTAWA Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth— Numerous Ottawa accidents were reported across Ottawa yesterday on a night when roads throughout the region became icy. Consequently a man was sent to an Ottawa hospital with a serious head injury and leg injuries after a tow truck rollover on Hwy. 417, just west of Anderson Road, around 9:30 p.m. Ottawa Paramedics said the driver was thrown out and pinned beneath the tow truck after it rolled over several times. Fire crews extricated the man, who is in his 20s. Sixteen firefighters responded to the Ottawa accident. A head injury can be a life altering injury…I wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Another serious Ottawa car accident involved a single-vehicle rollover close to 10 p.m. on Hwy. 417 near Rockdale Road, resulted in two teenaged boys, both 17, being extricated from an SUV. Rescuers had to remove all four doors and the roof to remove the two from the vehicle. It took firefighters and paramedics a full hour to pull the two boys from the wreck, and as they were working, three more vehicles crashed as they made their way past the scene. This time, no one was hurt. The two boys both have head, neck and back injuries and went to an Ottawa hospital with serious but non-life-threatening personal injuries. I hope both boys are ok and their injuries are not life altering..
Meanwhile, earlier Tuesday, a 28-year-old woman was involved in a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 416 near Hunt Club Road that left her with a serious spinal injury. Paramedics said the woman, who was travelling alone, could be paralysed.
OPP said that, in all, they responded to 23 Ottawa car accidents on Tuesday and another 12 Ottawa car accidents on Wednesday, all due to poor road conditions caused by the weather.
Police said that thankfully as of 8 a.m. this morning all major roads had been salted.

Ottawa Accident Hunt Club and Highway 416: Suspected Spinal Cord Injury: Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Car Accidents, Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Spinal Cord Injury on December 28th, 2010
Ottawa Accident Lawyer, Injury Lawyers Ottawa David Hollingsworth…Tragically, a 28-year-old Ottawa woman remains in serious condition in an Ottawa hospital after she suffered spinal injuries in a single vehicle rollover in Ottawa’s west end this morning. The extent of her spinal cord injuries is still not clear, but paramedics said when they arrived at the scene she had no sensation in her legs. “It’s a possibility (she severed her spinal cord),” said paramedic Supt. Francois Cote. “But without a CAT scan, a X-ray and further neurological tests it’s really hard for us to say.” The young woman, who was traveling alone in her 2006 silver Honda Civic northbound on Hwy. 416, lost control and the car accident happened just north of the Hunt Club Rd. Ottawa Police happened upon the vehicle, its engine smoking, at 7:39 a.m. It had rolled off into the median, landing on its roof.
Ottawa fire crews had to cut the young woman out of her crashed vehicle and treated her at the scene before she was taken to an Ottawa hospital where she remains with serious personal injuries. OPP is investigating. If you witnessed this Ottawa car accident and have any information, please contact P.C. Savoia at 613-270-9171.
Although the initial reports indicate very serious spinal cord injuries, I am sending out positive thoughts to this injured young woman and her family. I hope that the sensation returns to her legs quickly and that she is able to walk away and fully recover from this Ottawa car accident. Regardless of the outcome, she may have a very long road to recovery ahead of her…

Hello all — July is generally a very high rate month for Spinal Cord Injuries (“SCI’s”). Learn more about spinal cord injuries to raise awareness and promote ways that you can avoid the causes of spinal cord injuries. Causes of spinal cord injuries are highest in the bracket of automobile and other motor-vehicle vehicle accidents, at 44% of all cases according to one new study. Acts of violence cause spinal cord injuries about 24% of the time. Slip and falls are a close third at 22% of all cases. Athletic sports at 8%, and the remaining 2% from other activities such as cliff diving, holiday adventures, and other random high-risk activities generally.
Generally, the summer is the worst time for SCI, with July having the highest incidence as mentioned. SCI’s have been observed to occur more often on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, and in the evenings. Males experience SCI more often than females (at 82% vs. 18% respectively), and the average age for a SCI is about 32 years old. Also commonly known, drugs such as alcohol contribute substantially to SCI’s, with alcohol specifically accounting for 25% or more of cases.
Some people are more susceptible to the prospect of SCI. These are individuals that may suffer already from such diseases or genetic conditions as (1) atlantoaxial instability, (2) osteoporosis (3) congenital conditions, and (4) spinal arthropathies. This list is not exhaustive. It indicates that each individual is unique and thus will injure in a unique manner. So please drive safely and exercise caution when engaged in any of the activities as enumerated in the list above regarding causes of Spinal Cord Injuries. No one is invincible, and each day, countless innocent unsuspecting individuals are needlessly hurt on our roads and in our communities. Ottawa, Ontario Personal Injury Lawyer Shares Information that relates to Spinal Cord Injury
The Danger of Spinal Cord Injuries
If you or your loved ones have been experienced an accident or injury, please remember that your spinal cord is sensitive and your injuries (even if they seem minor) could pose a serious threat to your health and wellbeing. It is important to have your injury assessed by a qualified health care professional such as a medical doctor, chiropractor, and physiotherapist to ensure that you are in a position to move forward after your accident. Also, it is important to see a top Ottawa personal injury lawyer who understands the ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ of the spinal cord injury process. Top Ottawa Spinal Cord Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth will help you to ensure that you do not lose out on what you deserve to help you and your loved ones following your accident.
What is a Spinal Cord Injury?
A Spinal Cord Injury, often abbreviated simply as “SCI”, is any traumatic injury to the spinal cord that can result in a loss or impaired function or reduced mobility or feeling. Types of SCI include Paraplegic and Quadriplegic (Tetraplegic), used to describe the medical condition of a person who has become paralyzed. These classifications depend on the level and severity of a persons paralysis, and how it affects their limbs.
Common Causes of Spinal Cord Injury
Your spine is extremely fragile. It can be hurt in an injury or even slowly over the course of time. Typical common causes of damage to the spinal cord include traumatic activities such as Ottawa automobile accidents, Ontario gunshot injuries, Ontario slip and falls injuries, Ottawa sports injuries such as hockey, and so on. Damage to the spine is known as a lesion, and the paralysis is known as Quadriplegia (or sometimes “Quadraplegia” or “Tetraplegia” if the injury is in the Cervical region, or as Paraplegia if the injury is in the Thoracic, Lumbar or Sacral region.)
Contrary to popular belief, someone can suffer a Broken Neck or Back without becoming paralysed. This occurs when there is a fracture or dislocation of the vertebrae, but the spinal cord has not been damaged. However, neck and back injuries are extremely serious and tragedy can often result from these types of injuries. Please, ensure that you are taking as much care as possible in situations and contexts where injury could occur. I always recommend that the best way to deal with a SCI is to prevent it from evening happening, as it seems that a proactive approach about the process is the best way to ensure for your well-being and the health of your spine.
Types of Spinal Cord Injury
Basically, there are two broad classifications of SCI with respect to the lesions associated with the SCI, typically referred to as a complete or incomplete SCI. A complete SCI means the victim is now completely paralyzed below their point of lesion. On the other hand, an incomplete SCI means that only the specific part of the spine has become damaged. Victims of incomplete SCI may have sensation below their lesion but no movement, and visa versa. These classifications are broad and not all encompassing, since the range and variety of spinal cord injuries is limitless … if an injury has occurred, I can help you to deal with it, but please remember that a proactive approach to your activities such as sports activities and driving on the roads is the key to ensuring for your safety!
What is Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation ?
If your spinal cord has become injured, please remember that tradegy does occur but that there is always hope. You will likely face a long road of rehabilitation, often at a Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Unit and Rehabilitation Centre or Spinal Injury Unit, and it is important for you to keep your sense of humor (especially on your unavoidable ‘bad’ days to help you to maintain a positive attitude that will help you to get through your injuries – I know you can do it).
In terms of timelines, a paraplegic will often stay in a hospital or rehabilitation facility for about five months, whereas a quadriplegic will require an additional few months on average (for a total length of approximately six to eight months). Both will under-go various forms of rehabilitation and physiotherapy before ultimate discharge from the hospital in order to help maximize recovery and familiarity with adaptive measures such as a wheelchair and general techniques to cope with their “new” lives. I want to stress that countless happiness studies have shown that people consistently demonstrate their ability to overcome adversity to lead even more fulfilled and happier lives – a spinal cord injury is tragic but you can choose to overcome it to lead an even more fulfilling life. I am here to help you in this process and to fight for you to ensure that you do not lose out on what you deserve in this difficult process.
