Ottawa weather conditions, 10 cm of snow fall expected. Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth reminding you to drive, bike and walk safely and get out your snow tires.
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources, safety on November 21st, 2011
Well Ottawa..it’s coming…Ottawa’s first significant snowfall of the season is coming tomorrow night and it sounds like it could be a messy one. Environment Canada has issued a weather alert for Tuesday night that warns us all to be cautious for the first winter storm of the fall. The winter alert indicated that snow and possibly freezing rain are possible from Belleville to Prescott and Russell to Bon Echo Park, including the City of Ottawa and Gatineau. They are calling for close to ten centimetres of snow may be possible in some areas by Wednesday morning. Cold air means that precipitation will fall as either snow or a mix of snow and rain, with a chance of freezing rain.
Please be careful out there on the roads..It’s easy to forget how slippery the roads can be. If you don’t already have an appointment to get those winter tires on, now is the time!
A note to pedestrians and cyclist. ..Please be extra cautious and really be aware of the cars and vehicles around you. Wait and check before crossing the street, even if it indicates for you to go. Cars may be skidding through that intersection.

Ottawa personal injury lawyer supporting Ontario pedestrian accident study.
As an Ottawa accident lawyer and Ontario personal injury lawyer, I am very pleased with the recent announcement that a new study into pedestrian deaths will be done by the Ontario Coroner’s Office. The Ontario pedestrian study is calling for Ontario residents to offer personal insight into pedestrian deaths. This brings relief to not only myself, but many families and friends who have lost a loved one in an Ontario pedestrain accident or whose loved ones have suffered serious injury such as a brain injury, spinal cord injury or broken bones. The study will hopefully reveal what many already know…we need to make our pathways safer. Some are calling for more protected, better marked pedestrian walkways on busy roadways. The Ottawa Police are also anticipating the study will help identify trends and predictors to the fatal Ottawa collisions.
Sadly, to date in 2011, 7 Ottawa pedestrians were killed in Ottawa accidents, the same number as in all of 2010. This is tragic! Not to mention that many other pedestrian accidents result in serious personal injury. The Ottawa pedestrain accident statistics are very disturbing. In 2010 there were 390 pedestrians who suffered serious personal injury in Ottawa accidents. The goal of the coroner’s probe is to identify common factors in the wrongful deaths and to make recommendations to avoid future pedestrian accidents in Ontario. The study aims to look at accident trends across Ontario, education needs, enforcement needs , engineering through cities and municipalities. The Ontario coroner’s office review will focus on deaths from 2010, with the report scheduled for release in spring 2012. In my opinion, as an Ottawa accident lawyer, this report can’t come soon enough !
The following are some statistics that relate to Ottawa pedestrain accidents:
2006 – 389, 2007 – 372, 2008 – 380, 2009 – 385, 2010 – 390
I know it goes without saying. Some accidents are out of our control. Please be extra cautious when walking on busy streets. Keep your head up, eyes open, but your phone away and focus on your surroundings. It may very well save a life.

Avoiding Catastrophic Injury and Accidents: Dangers of drowsy driving. Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Resources, safety on November 7th, 2011
Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…A startling new survey revealed that nearly a third of drivers in the last month had driven a vehicle when they were tired and they had difficulty keeping their eyes open. The survey was commissioned by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a not-for-profit organization “dedicated to saving lives and reducing injuries on the road.” Although 32 % of the survey participants admitted to drowsy driving, 96 % of those same drivers said drowsy driving is unacceptable behaviour. What’s even more frightening is that 41 % admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a study last year that revealed that 1/6 deadly fatal accidents and 1/8 accidents causing serious injury involved a drowsy driver. This clearly indicates a need to educate drivers about the dangers of drowsy driving. It may seem basic and simple, yet the numbers indicate it is not.
Tips from the AAA to help tired drivers avoid an accident:
Please, drive safely out there !!

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer on Hallowe’en Safety Tips…
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Resources, safety on October 30th, 2011
Happy Hallowe’en everyone. Before you head out tomorrow night , please take a minute to review these Hallowe’en safety tips from the Red Cross… My children are quite excited for the big day , as are most. We have finally decided on a lamb, a witch and a glowstick guy ! Looking forward to seeing all the kids. Enjoy your night everyone and please be safe !!! -Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth
With witches, goblins, and super-heroes descending on neighborhoods across Canada, the Canadian Red Cross offers parents some safety tips to help prepare their children for a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat holiday. Halloween should be filled with surprise and enjoyment, and following some common practices to keep events safer and more fun!
- Costumes should be light-colored and flame resistant with reflective strips so that children are more easily seen at night. (And remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards, and brooms, too!)
- Costumes should be short enough to avoid tripping.
- Remind children to keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flammable.)
- Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover the eyes.
- Remind children to walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks – not in the street.
- Explain to children that calls should be made along one side of the street first and then the other, and that it’s best to cross the street only at intersections or crosswalks.
- Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks, and low-flying brooms.
- Provide yourself or the children with a flashlight to see better and to be better seen.
- Have children plan their route and share it with you and the family.
- Trick or Treaters should travel in groups of four or five. Young children should be accompanied by an adult.
- Visit homes that have the porch light on.
- Make sure children know they should accept treats at the door and must not get into cars or enter the homes or apartments of strangers.
- Remind children not to eat their treats and goodies until they are examined by an adult at home. And candy should not be eaten if the package is already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.
Injury is no accident. Prepare! Stay Safe! Survive!

Attempted Child Abduction in Ottawa: tips to prepare your child on what to do when a stranger approaches
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Resources, safety on October 20th, 2011
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…I don’t want to be an alarmist but my children’s school issued the following stranger alert this week and it serves as a great reminder to us all. Please take a couple of minutes to go over this with your child. Our children are everything and they can never be over prepared for such a situation.
On Oct. 17th, around 8:30 pm, a young 11 year old boy reported an attempted abduction at Fisher Park Community Centre. The man was described as middle-eastern looking, in his 40s, spoke English without accent, and had 2 moles on his face. He drove a car resembling a 4 door silver Chevrolet sedan. If you have more information, contact the Ottawa Police.
The safety of our children is our top priority. The following information can assist you with this conversation.
Who is a Stranger?
A stranger is anyone you don’t know. Strangers can be men, women or teenagers. If you have never met them in real life, they are a stranger! Although there are kind strangers, some strangers are not always kind and some can hurt you. A stranger who is not kind does not have to look scary. They can be good looking, clean and well dressed. There is no way to tell if someone is good just by looking at them. Bad people can pretend to be nice to try to fool you. Don’t be fooled!
Just stay away.
What should I do if a stranger tries to talk to me? Ignore them. Do not look at them or acknowledge that they have spoken to you. Walk quickly or run away from them. Go in the opposite direction as fast as you can. Go to a home of someone you know or to an area that has a lot of people.
You can dart into a store or school if you have too. Tell an adult you can trust about what happened, like a parent, a teacher, a police officer or some other grownup your parents said you can talk to.
How do strangers trick you?
Strangers who are bad people and want to hurt you have developed some pretty tricky things to do to confuse you and get you alone with them. First there is the “Help Trick“. This is when a stranger asks you to help them find a lost pet or maybe asks you for directions to get somewhere. Seems harmless enough right? That is what they want you to think. There are adults all over the place that a stranger can ask for help. Turn and walk away.
The next trick is called the “Emergency Trick”. This is a scary one for a child to be subjected too. A stranger will tell you that there is an emergency in your family and your mom or dad asked them to get you. The stranger may even say that your mom or dad got hurt. Think straight. Your mom or dad would never send a stranger to tell you news like this. Turn around and run away!
A new one that strangers are trying is the “Accident Trick”. This is when a stranger lies on the ground and looks like they have been injured and unconscious or in pain. The desire to help this person is big and kids want to help and be a hero. Do not go over to the person. They can grab you and take you away. Instead, go to someone you know and tell them about the situation or call 911 and they will come to help. You don’t need to be near the person while an adult or emergency crew come to assist. Stay away!
The “Animal Trick” is another one that is hard to resist. This is when a stranger holds a small animal and invites you to pet it. This is a trick! You are close enough for this stranger to discard the animal and grab you. The stranger might ask you to come back to their car or home and help feed the baby animal. Don’t! Turn around and runaway.
The last is called the “Bribe Trick“. This is when a stranger promises you candy, money or something else of interest. People do not give gifts to people they do not know. This is a trick. Once the stranger has you alone you are going to be hurt. Turn around and run away.

Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth: Have a safe and happy long labour day weekend !
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…We are just hours away from the long weekend. I wanted to take a minute to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable weekend. Be careful on the roads and in the waters if you are at a cottage or boating. Please do not drink and drive ! Plan ahead and organise a safe long weekend for your family, friends and yourself.
The Canadian Red Cross Put out these excellent safety tips, which serve as a great reminder to us all…
Safety first this long weekend
Because personal injury is no accident. Long weekends can mean highway travel, boating trips, camping, swimming and fun at the cottage. While all these activities create lasting summer memories, they all share the potential for injury. Be prepared for a safe and fun season. While heading to the cottage or campsite this weekend, Canadian Red Cross asks you to consider these important safety tips.
Safety in, on, and around water
- Try on their life jacket to see that it still fits and that all the zippers and buckles are in good working order.
- When boating, always wear a life jacket. Even in nice weather, even close to shore. On average, more than 500 people drown every year in Canada. Life jackets really do save lives.
- Power boaters need to have their Pleasure Craft Operator Card in order to operate a boat.
- If you’re staying near the water at a campsite, cottage or resort, always supervise children. Kids love water and may wander over ‘just to take a look’, or to get that beach ball that’s bobbing on the surface.
Prevent personal injuries
- Buckle up. Infants and young children should be in a car seat or size-appropriate booster seat.
- Hot dogs around the campfire are great but can be easily lodged in young children’s throats. If you have toddlers, make sure to cut the hotdog lengthwise and then into small pieces.
- Review fire safety rules with the kids. They shouldn’t play with matches, poke the fire, or roughhouse near the flames where they might fall in.
- Be sure children play on age-appropriate playground equipment. Falls are a leading cause of injury for kids.
- Keep pool chemicals, pest control substances and cleaners out of reach of children.

Ottawa Police : Canada Road Safety Week , Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources, safety on May 27th, 2011
Ottawa Law Firms – Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…As an Ontario Personal Injury Lawyer, I applaud and support the efforts made by the Ottawa Police to make our Ottawa streets a safer place….The Ottawa Police Service will participate in Canada Road Safety Week which runs from May 16 to May 23. In 2010, there were 30 fatal car accidents that resulted in the deaths of 34 people in the Ottawa community. Consequently, the Ottawa Police have made traffic safety a high priority through various initiatives. One program the Ottawa Police have put in place is the RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) Programs during the evenings of Thursday May 19th and Friday May 20th. The RIDE Program in Ontario is led by the police community which runs all year long and involves random police spot checks where vehicles are stopped and drivers are checked for impaired driving.
Ottawa Police are also actively engaged in Project E.R.A.S.E. (Eliminate Racing Activity on Streets Everywhere) a collaborative effort of 22 police services, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment whose goal is to change poor driver behavior through education and strategic enforcement. Sadly, since 1999 48 people have been killed in Ontario as a result of street racing activities . In addition, excessive speed continues to be the leading contributing factor in fatal car accidents.
During Canada’s Road Safety Week, Ottawa police will focus on 4 issues:
- Drinking and driving.
- Seat belts and child restraints.
- Aggressive driving, driving at unsafe speeds, following too closely or running red lights and stop signs.
- Distracted Driving
As an Ottawa personal injury lawyer and along with the Ottawa Police, encourage everyone on our roadways to work towards making our Ottawa roads and Ontario roads the safest in the world. Let’s do it Ottawa !
