Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth On Snowy Weather and Safe Driving

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth ..Ottawa weather…It looks like more snow is on the way Ottawa. We can expect close to 5 to 7 centimetres of snow today.  Several Ottawa accidents have already been reported :

Ottawa Accident: An SUV was involved in an Ottawa  accident on River Road, south of Earl Armstrong Road.

Ottawa Accident:  A car lost control on Greenbank Road near Fallowfield Road and ended up in the ditch.

Other Ottawa Accidents : Ottawa Paramedics  responded to several Ottawa  accidents overnight.

Its is currently snowing and very windy out there.  This will have a direct impact on driving conditions and Ottawa roads. Its important that we all adjust our driving to the current Ottawa weather conditions.

Driving safely on snowy and icy roads

  1. Slow down and leave yourself lots of room to stop. Allow at least 3X  more space between you and other vehicles in front of you.
  2. Always brake gently and slowly to avoid skidding. If your wheels lock up, gently ease off the brakes.
  3. Keep lights on and clean to increase your visibility to other motorists.
  4. Stay in  low gears for best traction.
  5. Avoid using cruise control on icy roads.
  6. Be extra cautious on bridges, overpasses and side roads, which will freeze first. Even when temperatures are above freezing, these roads can cause very dangerous situations.
  7. Never pass snow plows, salt or  sand trucks. You never know what is ahead of them. It’s not worth risking an accident.
  8. Most of all, use common sense.

Please, drive and arrive safely out there on Ottawa roads….

How an Ottawa personal injury lawyer can help you. Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth…Often times I am called to simply give an opinion. Someone has been in an accident and they have been dealing with their insurance companies and their insurance company has offered them a low ball offer to settle.  It makes absolute sense that before accepting an offer from an insurance company, a second opinion would be good.  As an Ottawa personal injury lawyer, I do this all the time.  Sometimes the insurance company has made a fair offer but often times , it does not favour the accident victim.  It’s important to remember that insurance companies are a business and their bottom line is to save money. Most times I am able to quickly get the facts of the case and give my opinion right away.  I have settled thousands of cases so I am able to give a pretty good idea of what a personal injury case is worth. If you have been seriously injured in an Ontario accident, give us a call. It’s free.  It never hurts to consult with an Ottawa personal injury lawyer.  An Ottawa personal injury lawyer can help you decide whether or not you have a case and how much it is worth. You owe it to yourself and your family. Call our Ottawa personal injury lawyers: David Hollingsworth or Denis Alisic.

What does a personal injury lawyer do ?

What does a personal injury lawyer do?

I am asked this question every day. The truth is a personal injury lawyer plays a vital role in ensuring you get what you need after an accident.  Often times, insurance companies will try to work with you but keep in mind they are not working for you.  They are not representing you.  A personal injury lawyer knows what to expect from the insurance adjusters.  Most times, they will have had or seen a similar case and know exactly what to expect.  After all, this is what a personal injury lawyer does day in, day out. Most times, an accident victim will contact a personal injury lawyer and that allows the lawyer to take over and represent you.  They then start ordering the necessary reports needed to build your case and they make sure that you are getting the support you need to start to recover.  This support comes in many forms. It may be rehabilitation support, medical support, housekeeping, counselling, home modifications, etc…First things first, a personal injury lawyer will meet with you to determine what your needs are and then start working for you to fulfill these needs. After an accident, everything seems different.  The beginning is especially hard because it’s a new way of life.  I meet everyday with Ontario accident victims who are struggling to get back the life they once had before the accident. Accidents are terrible and unfortunately they will continue to happen.  Personal injury lawyers can help.  They can help rebuild lives not only of the accident victims, but also their families. Yes, accidents affect everyone and it’s important that everyone involved gets the support they need. Each case is unique and everyone will have different needs.  The important thing is that accident victims get the help and compensation they need.  A personal injury lawyer can help with that.

If you have been in an accident or a family member or loved one has been in an accident, you should consult a personal injury lawyer .  They can help and they will.  You have been through enough.

Ottawa’s NHL All Star Weekend Schedule, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…I hope you are excited as I am to be participating in the NHL All Star weekend here in Ottawa. There is lots to do around Ottawa.

RIDEAU CANAL The world’s longest skating rink, suitably, will be the centre of many All-Star Weekend activities.

OPENING CEREMONIES tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.

The NHL All-star weekend kicks off with the Stanley Cup and several other of the league’s most prestigious trophies, including the Hart, travelling along the Rideau canal by sleigh. All are welcome to skate along with the procession, which begins at Waverly Street and ends at the Ottawa Convention Centre, where the trophies will be on display at Fan Fair.

NHL All Star fact: The last time the Stanley Cup was on the Rideau Canal was in 1905, when Harvey Pulford, a member of the Ottawa Silver Seven, drop-kicked the trophy into the water after some late-night partying.

ENERGIZER NIGHT SKATE

Friday, 7 p.m.

Participants will don headlamps as they skate a five-km route along the canal, with proceeds from the $20 (adults) and $15 (children under 12) registration fee going to the Sens Foundation’s plan to build 19 outdoor rinks in Ottawa. The event begins and ends at Waverly Street. Organizers are expecting more than 2,500 skaters for what they hope will become an annual event.

 Many NHL all-stars, including Jason Spezza, will play shinny over the next few days with friends on one of Ottawa’s outdoor rinks.

JUNIOR SKILLS COMPETITION: Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon

Canadian Tire’s national skills competition for players seven to 12 years old — they are being flown in from around the country — takes place between Rideau Street and the Mackenzie King Bridge.
Did you know? Chicago Blackhawks captain — and NHL All-Star — Jonathan Toews helped co-found the Canadian Tire Hockey School, which runs the junior skills competition.

CASINO DU LAC-LEAMY” 1 Blvd. du Casino, Gatineau

FANTASY DRAFT:Thursday, 8 to 9:30 p.m.

The All-Star Game draft — two pre-selected captains will choose lineups like kids on an outdoor rink — will be a glitzy affair at the casino. This is a great opportunity to see NHL stars up close as they walk into the event.

NHL All Star fact: Last year, Toronto Maple Leafs’ Phil Kessel was picked last in the draft. But he got a decent consolation prize — a new car, and a $20,000 donation to a charity of his choice.

 OTTAWA CONVENTION CENTRE 55 Colonel By Dr.

NHL FAN FAIR: Thursday, 3-10 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

All three floors of Ottawa’s grand new convention centre will be transformed into a giant hockey theme park. The actual time of player appearances for autographs sessions is still being worked out, but here’s a look at some of the activities lined up for Fan Fair:

  • Pose with the Stanley Cup as well as other NHL trophies;
  • Meet former NHL stars at autograph signings;
  • Take photos of your favourite NHL team mascot;
  • Collect and trade hockey memorabilia and cards;
  • Learn more about the history of the game at 30 exhibits;
  • Test your shot accuracy and other hockey skills at one of the interactive attractions

 SCOTIABANK PLACE 1000 Palladium Dr.

NHL SKILLS COMPETITION Saturday, 7 p.m.

The league’s best show off their skating, puck-handling and shooting skills. The event is sold out, but will be shown on CBC-TV.
NHL All Star fact: At this year’s Senators skills competition, Colin Greening (who will also take part in Saturday’s event) set a team record in the fastest skating competition with a time of 13.343 seconds. That gives him a good shot at winning Saturday — last year’s top time was Islanders winger Michael Grabner’s 14.238 seconds.

ALL-STAR GAME-Sunday, 4 p.m.

The busy weekend wraps up with the big game itself, which will feature four Ottawa Senators: Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza, Erik Karlsson and Milan Michalek.

NHL All Star fact: All-Star Weekend is expected to pump $30 million to $35 million into the local economy.

I plan on partaking in the NHL festivities with my son.  Enjoy the weekend Ottawa, have fun and play safe !

Ottawa Rideau Canal Open : Skating Safety and Canal Conditions, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa : Personal Injury Lawyers in Ottawa, Ontario..David Hollingsworth

BBBBrrrrrrrr ! Well the forecast is -31 degrees celsius today.  That’s too cold for me to be outside.  This freezing cold weather does however allow for the Rideau canal to finally open. This is a great thing for Ottawa . The National Capital Commission opened the 42nd Rideau canal skating season of the world’s largest skating rink this morning. The 2.2 km section of the Rideau canal between the Bank Street Bridge and the Pretoria Bridge is open to all skaters.  A reminder to all skaters that a red flag flying at the canal means the ice conditions are not safe for any activity, including walking. I also recommend everyone wear a helmet; adults and children alike.

Safety on the Rideau Canal

  • Learn the flag system: A green flag means that the Skateway is open; a red flag means that it is closed.
  • Watch for cracks!
  • Consider your safety and that of others. The following are not permitted on the ice:
    • dogs
    • bikes
    • hockey sticks and pucks.
  • Warm up if you feel chilled. Heated chalets are located at various points along the Skateway.

When it comes to skates, a proper fitting lace-up single blade skates are required. The rule of thumb for purchasing skates is one size smaller than shoe size. New skates do not come sharpened and will require sharpening prior to the first class.

Also make sure you are dressed for the occasion. Wear warm, comfortable clothes that are easy to move in. For example, wear  warm, water-resistant pants, non-bulky jackets and warm gloves.

Enjoy this wonderful Rideau canal. We are so lucky here in Ottawa to have it. Please remember that safety is key to an enjoyable skate on Ottawa’s Rideau Canal and safety. As in any sport, accidents can happen. Do what you can to stay safe and most of all, enjoy !

Ottawa Frost Bite Warning In Effect: Be careful on slippery Ottawa roads and sidewalks: Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

The freezing rain and snow have finally stopped and now a deep cold is setting in throughout Ottawa and eastern Ontario.  Ottawa, Gatineau, Brockville, Cornwall and Smiths Falls were under a snowfall warning until late afternoon, with 15 centimetres or more expected throughout the day. A freezing rain warning was lifted that morning. There were over 60 Ottawa accidents yesterday and reports indicate that some Ottawa accident victims suffered minor injuries.  Police believe that this was due to the fact that Ottawa drivers were slowing down and driving cautiously.  Well done !  Not all accidents can be avoided but this just goes to show that if all drivers out there are driving very carefully we can reduce the number of Ottawa accidents that result in serious personal injury.  To all of you out there who took a little extra time to get to your destination, or drove a little more defensively, congratulations , you did a great job.

That being said, you job is not done.  There is a frost bite warning in effect in Ottawa. Dropping temperatures and increasing winds today will give us  a -28 C wind chill. This cold cold weather looks like it’s here to stay for the day and will be as lows hit -22 C this evening. Once you add  in the windchill factor and we’re looking at -27 C , according to Environment Canada. In other words, its coooooooooooolllllllldddddddddddddddd. My advice, stay in.  It is supposed to warm up a little tomorrow.  Unfortunately, our Ottawa roads and sidewalks will be slick and slippery. This will make it very challenging for Ottawa drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

I have to admit, as much as I would like to, I can’t stay in.  We will be out about shuffling our children from hockey rinks to swimming pools. My plan..slow and steady wins the race. We will get to where we need to be , then home for the SENS game..Go Sens go !  Please be safe out there today Ottawa.  Take your time, keep our Ottawa roads as accident free as possible. Have a great, safe weekend.

City of Ottawa Skating Safety : Rideau Canal conditions, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…I am very happy  that Ottawa children under the age of 10 will be required to wear protective helmets during public skating sessions held in City of Ottawa  facilities  effective January 1, 2012. It is estimated that 5,700 Ottawa children receive medical treatments for personal injury in Ottawa emergency rooms, and 400 children are hospitalized, every year because of sports-related head injuries.  This is very disturbing.  We all want kids to have fun but it cannot be at the expense of their safety.  Please take all necessary safety measures when it comes to children’s safety. There are far too many serious injuries each year such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and serious orthopedic injuries.

 The City of Ottawa offers the following Safe Skating Tips:

  • Wear the gear! Wearing a CSA (Canadian Standards Association), Snell or ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) approved helmet, that fits properly, will help prevent head injury. It should be worn snug,  yet comfortable. Hockey helmets are recommended over cycling helmets because they can withstand multiple impacts. Wrist guards, elbow pads and knee pads help prevent wrist fractures, and bruises on knees and elbows.
  • Choose proper fitting skates that give good support around your ankles (moulded skates are not recommended). Local sport stores should be able to help you with a proper fit. Remember, new skates must be sharpened before you go on the ice and then sharpened again each year at the start of the skating season.
  • Lace your skates all the way up. You should never wrap the laces around your ankle. If the laces are too long, tie them in a double knot so you don’t trip over them.
  • Wear only one pair of socks. Multiple pairs will make you feel colder and your skates might be too tight.
  • Wear proper clothing: gloves, neck warmer, helmet, waterproof jacket and pants (NO jeans, as they will not keep you warm and dry if they get wet), long underwear, and a sweater should do the trick.
  • Get trained! Instructors will be able to teach you the basics of skating, such as how to stop, how to fall safely, and how to get up after a fall. For lessons call 613-580-2596.
  • Choose a surface that is relatively free of bumps and cracks to allow for more control and an easier time stopping. If skating on the Rideau Canal, watch for the green flags to ensure the conditions are safe. The N.C.C.’s Rideau Canal Skateway conditions hotline is: (613) 239-5234, press 1,1
  • Watch where you are going, and always skate with the traffic. If you want to stop, head to the side so you won’t get in anyone’s way.

Avoid the following:

  • Skating on the Rideau Canal Skateway when the red flags are flying.
  • Skating too fast – this puts you and those around you at risk.
  • Playing sports unless in a designated area (ex: hockey).
  • Holding on to more than one person – this increases your chance of falling and hurting someone else.
  • Placing sharp items in your pockets (ie. keys, combs, etc.).
  • Using your toe-pick to start or stop (this will ruin the ice surface, and it won’t give the stability you need to safely start or stop), or removing bottom pick (designed to help you balance).
  • Clothing with drawstrings.

-Enjoy this winter and please be safe.                                          -Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth
