Ottawa Freezing Rain, Ottawa Weather conditions, lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, safety on January 27th, 2012
Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth..Be careful out there, it’s slippery. Ottawa received about six-hours of freezing rain earlier this morning. The rain worked its way across the region and then tuned to snow late this morning. What this means for Ottawa is a nice layer of snow covering the ice. This makes for very slippery road conditions. Both drivers and pedestrians need to be extra cautious.
Ottawa commuters need to leave extra time to get to their destinations and expect a slower than normal drive.
Ottawa roads are very slick, and most are covered with a slush layer, making driving very treacherous. Ottawa Police, paramedics and fire rescue crews were busy all day responding to dozens of Ottawa accidents, especially along the Hwy 417, Hwy. 416 and Hwy. 174 , where there have been a high number of serious Ottawa accidents. Hwy. 138 has been shut due to a serious crash between Willy Allen Rd. and Bonville (in the St. Andrews area, north of Cornwall). The eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 have also been closed at mile marker 756 near Morrisburg due to another serious accident.
Ottawa’s weather has also unfortunately resulted closed the Rideau Canal Skateway this morning. National Capital Commission has been working hard to keep the Rideau Canal open this weekend for the thousands of visitors coming to Ottawa for the NHL All-Star Weekend.
As the day goes on, Ottawa roads are getting better but will likely freeze again tonight. Drive, walk and cycle carefully and slowly. Please give yourself the extra braking time.

Ottawa neurosurgeon Dr. Vassilyadi and child head injury, study calls for new helmet
Ottawa Head Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Brain Injury Attorneys….Ottawa-based neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Vassilyadi has conducted a research that shows hockey helmets are the most effective at protecting children and preventing serious head injury to children tobogganing. The experiment conducted by Dr. Michael Vassilyadi, the neurosurgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and also a professor at the University of Ottawa, tested helmets designed for hockey, downhill skiing and cycling. Dr. Vassilyadi and his Ottawa team simulated the potential impact that might occur while tobogganing. The findings were amazing. Hockey helmets were determined to be the safest, over bicycle helmets. This is especially true if the hockey helmet has a face shield guard. Dr . Vassilyadi noted that often times, when a child suffers a tobogganing injury, they often have facial injuries such as torn lips, broken teeth, broken nose, or eye injuries.
The bottom line is that any helmet is better than none for tobogganing. So if you can’t have access to a hockey helmet, then please grab whatever helmet you have when you take your kids out tobogganing. As an Ontario personal injury lawyer who has had many clients with severe head injuries, I am in complete agreement with Dr. Vassilyadi and support is desire to see a helmet created for outdoor winter activities such as tobogganing and skating. It really does seem crazy not to.
Dr Vassilyadi explained that collisions in tobogganing are usually to the front of the head, whereas ski accidents usually involve impacts to the side of the head, where ski helmets were the most effective. Again this just goes to show that there is a need for a specific helmet to be designed for tobogganing , as there is currently no helmet specifically designed to protect the front of the head on impact.
All this to say, do everything you can to keep your little one’s (and yourself) safe. Take every safety step you can. A child brain injury or head injury is life altering. Enjoy this winter and all it’s wonderful activities, but please be safe.

Ottawa Rideau Canal Open : Skating Safety and Canal Conditions, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources, safety on January 15th, 2012
Ottawa : Personal Injury Lawyers in Ottawa, Ontario..David Hollingsworth
BBBBrrrrrrrr ! Well the forecast is -31 degrees celsius today. That’s too cold for me to be outside. This freezing cold weather does however allow for the Rideau canal to finally open. This is a great thing for Ottawa . The National Capital Commission opened the 42nd Rideau canal skating season of the world’s largest skating rink this morning. The 2.2 km section of the Rideau canal between the Bank Street Bridge and the Pretoria Bridge is open to all skaters. A reminder to all skaters that a red flag flying at the canal means the ice conditions are not safe for any activity, including walking. I also recommend everyone wear a helmet; adults and children alike.
Safety on the Rideau Canal
- Learn the flag system: A green flag means that the Skateway is open; a red flag means that it is closed.
- Watch for cracks!
- Consider your safety and that of others. The following are not permitted on the ice:
- dogs
- bikes
- hockey sticks and pucks.
- Warm up if you feel chilled. Heated chalets are located at various points along the Skateway.
When it comes to skates, a proper fitting lace-up single blade skates are required. The rule of thumb for purchasing skates is one size smaller than shoe size. New skates do not come sharpened and will require sharpening prior to the first class.
Also make sure you are dressed for the occasion. Wear warm, comfortable clothes that are easy to move in. For example, wear warm, water-resistant pants, non-bulky jackets and warm gloves.
Enjoy this wonderful Rideau canal. We are so lucky here in Ottawa to have it. Please remember that safety is key to an enjoyable skate on Ottawa’s Rideau Canal and safety. As in any sport, accidents can happen. Do what you can to stay safe and most of all, enjoy !

Ottawa Frost Bite Warning In Effect: Be careful on slippery Ottawa roads and sidewalks: Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources, safety on January 14th, 2012
The freezing rain and snow have finally stopped and now a deep cold is setting in throughout Ottawa and eastern Ontario. Ottawa, Gatineau, Brockville, Cornwall and Smiths Falls were under a snowfall warning until late afternoon, with 15 centimetres or more expected throughout the day. A freezing rain warning was lifted that morning. There were over 60 Ottawa accidents yesterday and reports indicate that some Ottawa accident victims suffered minor injuries. Police believe that this was due to the fact that Ottawa drivers were slowing down and driving cautiously. Well done ! Not all accidents can be avoided but this just goes to show that if all drivers out there are driving very carefully we can reduce the number of Ottawa accidents that result in serious personal injury. To all of you out there who took a little extra time to get to your destination, or drove a little more defensively, congratulations , you did a great job.
That being said, you job is not done. There is a frost bite warning in effect in Ottawa. Dropping temperatures and increasing winds today will give us a -28 C wind chill. This cold cold weather looks like it’s here to stay for the day and will be as lows hit -22 C this evening. Once you add in the windchill factor and we’re looking at -27 C , according to Environment Canada. In other words, its coooooooooooolllllllldddddddddddddddd. My advice, stay in. It is supposed to warm up a little tomorrow. Unfortunately, our Ottawa roads and sidewalks will be slick and slippery. This will make it very challenging for Ottawa drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
I have to admit, as much as I would like to, I can’t stay in. We will be out about shuffling our children from hockey rinks to swimming pools. My plan..slow and steady wins the race. We will get to where we need to be , then home for the SENS game..Go Sens go ! Please be safe out there today Ottawa. Take your time, keep our Ottawa roads as accident free as possible. Have a great, safe weekend.

Ottawa and eastern Ontario freezing rain : Tips for driving in icy conditions, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyers, Ottawa Accident Lawyer…Listen up Ottawa ! A freezing rain warning issued by Environment Canada for Ottawa and parts of Eastern Ontario is expected to continue throughout tonight and into the morning. The freezing rain has contributed to over 50 reported car accidents in Ottawa today and is suspected to be a contributing factor to a serious accident on highway 401 this morning that partially closed highway 401 for close to 9 hours, near Kingston. Leaving over 100 cars stuck for hours.
Many school boards have closed cancelled their busses. The Upper Canada District School Board cancelled all buses but schools remained open. The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario also cancelled all buses.
Ontario Provincial Police , Ottawa police and I are warning commuters to drive slowly on the icy roads in eastern Ontario. As an Ottawa personal injury lawyer, I also want to caution pedestrians to be careful while walking on Ottawa’s roads and sidewalks. Cars may not be able to stop .Please keep your head up and be extra vigilant. Drivers need to also be aware that the sidewalks and roads are slippery and consequently be a lot more aware of pedestrians. The following are a few driving safety tips for driving in icy conditions.

What you can do to prevent a brain injury when skiing, skating and tobogganing :Ottawa Ontario Traumatic Brain Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Ottawa Ontario Brain Injury and Head Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…There are far too many injuries resulting in traumatic head injuries and traumatic brain injury every year. A traumatic brain injury can happen in a split second and change your life forever, as well as the life of your friends and family. Not all head injuries and brain injuries are preventable, but you can take steps to reduce the risks in some activities. ThinkFirst is a national non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of brain and spinal cord injuries. It has some very valuable resources that I thought I would share with you….Have fun, play safe and protect your head ! -Ottawa , Ontario Brain Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Brain Injury Facts:
The good news on brain injury..
- Bike helmets can prevent up to 88 % of brain injuries when used properly
- Skiers and snowboarders who wear helmets reduce their risk for head injuries by 60 %
What you can do to help prevent a brain injury…
-Encourage kids to be active, but ensure they get proper training, wear the gear, and are able to effectively navigate risks.
-Be a role model: as parents, coaches and educators it is important to model safe, responsible behaviours like wearing a properly fitted helmet during appropriate activities, and buckling up in the car
Each severe brain injury costs our medical system over $400,000 at the time of injury. Costs remain approximately the same each year following the incident due to indirect expenses and follow-up treatment
Although catastrophic brain injuries in sports and recreation can affect anyone, boys/men are affected four times as frequently as girls/women
Wondering what helmet to wear?
· Skateboarding, In-line skating and Scooters – Because falls are common in these activities, helmets for skateboarding, in-line skating and scooters should cover the back of the head to better protect against backward falls and withstand multiple impacts. A skateboard or in-line skating helmet should not be used for bicycle riding unless specified on the label. No standards have been set for scooter helmets.
Multi-sport helmets – Some helmets are marketed as “multi-sport” meaning they meet safety standards for more than one activity (such as skateboarding and in-line skating). Be sure the helmet you buy has been tested for the activities you will be using it for.
Field Sports – Team field sports, such as football, baseball/so-ball and lacrosse, have helmets specific to the kinds of hazards each sport presents. Football and lacrosse require face protectors on helmets because of the level of contact between players and equipment.·
Hockey – Multiple impact helmets are intended to protect your head from impacts due to falls on ice and collisions with the boards. Hockey helmets are also recommended for ice skating and tobogganing.
Skiing and snowboarding – Ski helmets can be single- or multiple-impact helmets (check the manufacturer’s label) and cover more of the back of the head than a bicycle helmet.
Ice skating and Sledding/ tobogganing – While specific ice skating and sledding helmets have not been developed, ice hockey helmets (skating and sledding) and ski helmets (sledding) are an option because they are designed to protect the head in all directions in icy conditions.
Researchers estimate that 90 % of all injuries are predictable and preventable Remember: Most crashes aren’t accidents, but predictable, preventable events. Change the way you speak about these events to change social perception

City of Ottawa Skating Safety : Rideau Canal conditions, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources, Personal Injury Claims, safety on January 8th, 2012
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…I am very happy that Ottawa children under the age of 10 will be required to wear protective helmets during public skating sessions held in City of Ottawa facilities effective January 1, 2012. It is estimated that 5,700 Ottawa children receive medical treatments for personal injury in Ottawa emergency rooms, and 400 children are hospitalized, every year because of sports-related head injuries. This is very disturbing. We all want kids to have fun but it cannot be at the expense of their safety. Please take all necessary safety measures when it comes to children’s safety. There are far too many serious injuries each year such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and serious orthopedic injuries.
The City of Ottawa offers the following Safe Skating Tips:
- Wear the gear! Wearing a CSA (Canadian Standards Association), Snell or ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) approved helmet, that fits properly, will help prevent head injury. It should be worn snug, yet comfortable. Hockey helmets are recommended over cycling helmets because they can withstand multiple impacts. Wrist guards, elbow pads and knee pads help prevent wrist fractures, and bruises on knees and elbows.
- Choose proper fitting skates that give good support around your ankles (moulded skates are not recommended). Local sport stores should be able to help you with a proper fit. Remember, new skates must be sharpened before you go on the ice and then sharpened again each year at the start of the skating season.
- Lace your skates all the way up. You should never wrap the laces around your ankle. If the laces are too long, tie them in a double knot so you don’t trip over them.
- Wear only one pair of socks. Multiple pairs will make you feel colder and your skates might be too tight.
- Wear proper clothing: gloves, neck warmer, helmet, waterproof jacket and pants (NO jeans, as they will not keep you warm and dry if they get wet), long underwear, and a sweater should do the trick.
- Get trained! Instructors will be able to teach you the basics of skating, such as how to stop, how to fall safely, and how to get up after a fall. For lessons call 613-580-2596.
- Choose a surface that is relatively free of bumps and cracks to allow for more control and an easier time stopping. If skating on the Rideau Canal, watch for the green flags to ensure the conditions are safe. The N.C.C.’s Rideau Canal Skateway conditions hotline is: (613) 239-5234, press 1,1
- Watch where you are going, and always skate with the traffic. If you want to stop, head to the side so you won’t get in anyone’s way.
Avoid the following:
- Skating on the Rideau Canal Skateway when the red flags are flying.
- Skating too fast – this puts you and those around you at risk.
- Playing sports unless in a designated area (ex: hockey).
- Holding on to more than one person – this increases your chance of falling and hurting someone else.
- Placing sharp items in your pockets (ie. keys, combs, etc.).
- Using your toe-pick to start or stop (this will ruin the ice surface, and it won’t give the stability you need to safely start or stop), or removing bottom pick (designed to help you balance).
- Clothing with drawstrings.
-Enjoy this winter and please be safe. -Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth
