 After Jonathan Jackson died in a car crash on Albion Road on Saturday evening, his brother, Andrew, recalled how much he enjoyed a family get-together before Mother’s Day.

Jonathan attended a youth group meeting at Bethel Pentecostal Church on Viewmount Drive and stayed at the home of his friend David Stringer on Friday night before he learned that his sister Jennifer, 22, and her husband, Max Lavoie, had paid the family a surprise visit. Jonathan, 18, a John McCrae Secondary School student, and David, 17, who was in Grade 12 at Merivale High School, were heading to pick up a friend for trip to the cinema when the car David was driving collided with an SUV on Albion Road.

Both young men died at the scene and four people in the SUV were injured, two seriously. Andrew Jackson, 20, said the family never went on day-long excursions, but on impulse they visited the Science and Technology Museum, toured the Parliament Buildings and took mother Lynda to dinner at her favourite Thai restaurant on Saturday. Jackson said his brother loved going out to restaurants and spending time with his family, so they went out together. “The best part was the tour of the Parliament Buildings,” Jackson said. “Even though Jonathan was terrified of heights, he still wanted to go to the top of the Peace Tower, and that was a big accomplishment for him.”Neither Jonathan nor I like Thai food, but we decided to surprise our mum and take her to her favourite restaurant. “That really made mum’s day because it was Jonathan’s birthday three weeks ago and mum’s birthday just a week ago. It was a real blessing that we got to do that before he died.”

Jackson said Jonathan liked his part-time job at Staples on Marketplace Avenue in Barrhaven, loved to walk his golden retriever, Charlie, and had recently started working out regularly at a gym. Staples manager Graham Yeadon said Jonathan was well-liked and a hard worker, and his death was a shock to everyone in the store.

“Being the older brother, and when there was no dad in the picture, Jonathan and I used to clash together like brothers do,” Andrew said. “But one thing I am so blessed to remember is that Jonathan and I were able to change our relationship.”I would take him out to play pool and we would spend time together. I am so glad that, now Jonathan had to leave, we did it on such positive terms and we were able to be so close.”Jonathan’s mother, Lynda Jackson, said she would always treasure memories of the last telephone call from her son.

“Jonathan had slept over at David’s on Friday night and called to say he was bringing my car over,” Lynda said. “I told him that I loved him and he said he loved me, which we often did during phone calls.”

Ottawa police Const. Kathy Larouche said the Pontiac Sunfire the two young men were in was southbound on Albion Road at 7:38 p.m. Saturday when it veered onto the shoulder of the road about 300 metres south of Rideau Road and spun into the path of a Hyundai Santa Fe. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but police have ruled out excessive speed and alcohol.

Larouche said the four people in the Santa Fe — one man, aged 66, and three women, aged 56, 59 and 81 — were in stable condition at The Ottawa Hospital.
