Ottawa Lawyers Personal Injury David Hollingsworth and Associates. Yes, this snow is great. My children are skating, skiing and tobogganing daily. I love it and I love seeing them outside, having so much fun. What I find hard is seeing kids out there without helmets on . I cringe and hold my breath when I see kids tobogganing down at full speed without a helmet on. Tobogganing and skiing are among the most dangerous winter activities and can lead to concussions. Yes, some concussions are minor and kids can rebound; however some concussions are life altering and can change a child’s life forever. The Canadian Hospital’s Injury Reporting Prevention Program reported that kids between the ages of 5-9, make up 40 % of all sledding injuries in Canada. Over 20 % of these injuries result in concussions, internal injuries and broken bones. Most of these personal injuries are caused by colliding with an object : tree, rock, or signs or from being thrown off a sled.
Dr. Michael Vassilyadi is a pediatric neurosurgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. He sees all types of child head injuries and has studied helmet use and outdoor winter activities. The bottom line is; use one. Whether it be a hockey helmet, bike helmet or ski helmet, the head needs protection when it comes to outdoor winter activities; especially in children.

Constance Bay accident hit and run death Erin Vance Memorial Fund
Ottawa personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth..Tragically, 26-year-old Erin Vance was killed after a hit-and-run accident in Constance Bay early this morning. Erin was a mother to twin five-year-old boys and enjoyed horse riding. Originally from Dunrobin, Erin Vance died while walking along Bayview Drive . She was walking with her boyfriend Justin Hammond, who tried to save her life by pushing her out of harm’s way. Sadly, the vehicle still hit her and the driver fled the accident scene on foot. Police were still looking for him as of about 10 a.m. Sunday. Erin is described as a loving mother, hard-working, friendly, popular, and patient . Vance had a horse named Connor which she had bought two years ago. The employees plan to auction off the horse, with the money going to support her two very young boys. Anyone with information regarding this accident is asked to contact the police. My thoughts go out to Erin’s family, her friends and especially her young boys.
update: Jeremy Rees, 23, who knew Erin and was at the same St Patrick’s day party surrendered himself to Ottawa police Monday afternoon. He was with his Ottawa lawyer. He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene.
The Erin Vance Memorial Fund was set up to raise money for her two young sons, Liam and Caleb. Donations can be made at any Scotiabank. There is also a fundraiser scheduled for April 21 at the Carp Arena.

Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth – The Ottawa Police Services has released that drivers who are distracted with electronic hand-held devices such as a blackberry or making dangerous lane changes are coming under close scrutiny of the Ottawa’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) next month .
I was surprised to learn that between 2007 and 2009, driver distraction was either fully or partially the cause of 5,800 car accidents in Ottawa, Ontario. Regrettably, these car accidents resulted in 7 deaths and 1,952 personal injuries. Hhhhmmm…
Dangerous lane changes are also reported as a serious issue. In 2009 1,162 accidents that were reported in Ottawa were the direct result of dangerous lane changes. These accidents resulted in 142 personal injuries and one fatality. Again, these are disturbing statistics.
As an Otttawa car accident lawyer I meet daily with accident victims with very serious personal injuries resulting from car accidents. I fully support these initiatives and hope that we see fewer Ottawa car accidents as a result. Some situations are completely out of our control and others are. Be safe and drive carefully.
