Tragic event- Boston Marathon explosion leaves 3 dead and dozens injured.

My thoughts go out to all those involved in the Boston marathon today.  At 2:45 pm today, the world changed again. Today’s tragic events have led to the death of 3 people and serious injuries to dozens of others.  I feel terrible for the family and friends of the participants who died  today in a senseless act.  It just goes to show how very important and special each day is and that we can’t take our loved ones for granted.  As a Ottawa personal injury lawyer, I meet people regularly with people who have lost loved ones in accidents and they would do anything to have them back , alive and well. This is a sad and tough reality.  Today’s tragic events will not be forgotten. Please, everyone go home and tell your family how much you love them, better yet show them. To the participants that died today, RIP and to their families’ and friends’, I’m so sorry.

Ottawa Tobogganing: Wear a helmet ! Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth cautioning everyone to be safe.

Ottawa Lawyers Personal Injury David Hollingsworth and Associates.  Yes, this snow is great.  My children are skating, skiing and tobogganing daily. I love it and I love seeing them outside, having so much fun.  What I find hard is seeing kids out there without helmets on . I cringe and hold my breath when I see kids tobogganing down at full speed without a helmet on.  Tobogganing and skiing are among the most dangerous winter activities and can lead to concussions. Yes, some concussions are minor and kids can rebound; however some concussions are life altering and can change a child’s life forever.  The Canadian Hospital’s Injury Reporting Prevention Program reported that kids between the ages of 5-9,  make up 40 % of all sledding  injuries in Canada. Over 20 % of these injuries result in concussions, internal injuries and broken bones. Most of these personal  injuries are caused by colliding with an object : tree, rock, or signs or from being thrown off a  sled.

Dr. Michael Vassilyadi is a pediatric neurosurgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.  He sees all types of child head injuries and has studied helmet use and outdoor winter activities. The bottom line is; use one.  Whether it be a hockey helmet, bike helmet or ski helmet, the head needs protection when it comes to outdoor winter activities; especially in children.

Please be safe out there. Enjoy this fabulously cold weather we are having.

Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth: How to prevent a slip and fall accident.

Good morning Ottawa ! It is cold out there today and very slippery. There is a layer of ice on the ground and its hard to see , as last night’s snow is covering the ground.  This is typically when slip and fall accidents happen. With the holidays here we are all out just a little more, shopping and visiting with others and often we are carrying bags or presents.|This, coupled with our weather conditions contribute to a higher incidence of slip and fall accidents.  Slip and fall accidents  in Canada makeup more than 50% of all personal injuries . Slip and falls accidents are the primary cause of accidents in hotels, restaurants and public buildings such as shopping malls.

As a property owner, it’s also important that you keep your property as safe as possible. This means keeping your walkways and steps clear of ice.  Property owners have a “duty of care” to see that their property is reasonably safe.  This not only means ensuring steps and walkways are cleared away in a reasonable manner, it also means  your home doesn’t have structural defects, hazardous conditions have been addressed.

Yes, accidents do happen but many accidents are preventable. There are things you can do to lower your risk of a slip and fall accident such as watching for ice, wearing proper footwear, walking slowly, keeping your hands free in case you do fall.

Please enjoy this holiday season and do whatever it takes to keep yourself , your family and your friends safe. Happy, safe holidays to all !

Tragic Ottawa rollover accident Upper Dwyer Hill at March road: car submerged in water filled ditch.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyers David Hollingsworth and Associates. Sadly, a 43 year old woman died yesterday at an Ottawa hospital. She has been submerged under water car after her car  flipped and landed in a ditch filled with water on Upper Dwyer Hill Road at March Road. Emergency crews got the call around 8:15, but tragically Ottawa firefighters couldn’t help the woman. They had to first tow the car out of the water ditch and turn it over before Ottawa paramedics could try to start to save her .   She was air-lifted to an Ottawa hospital and sadly she succumbed to her injuries. My thoughts are with her family and friends at this very sad and difficult time.

Ottawa Lawyer: Sport Injuries and Compensation

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth and Associates….I receive calls regularly asking me questions about sporting injuries and does one have the right to sue. In every sport, there are injuries. While some injuries may be avoided in sports, others aren’t.  Sporting injuries can happen anywhere; a friend’s house,  school, gymnasiums, sport fields and sport training facilities. Football and hockey seem to be the sports with the highest rates of severe injuries that hear of due to the high impact and high number of head injuries associated with these 2 sports. Some sport head injuries become mild concussions and people are able to return to their sport within a few days or weeks. As we all know, there are also severe head, back, brain, neck and spinal cord injuries that result from sporting accidents.  These injuries are life-altering and catastrophic injuries.

I’m often asked about compensation about such injuries.  Not all cases of sporting injuries result in the right to sue and seek insurance compensation. In order to receive compensation, it needs to be proven that the  facility where the injury took place provided  unsafe, or dysfunctional equipment. If this is proven, then they can be help liable. It may be difficult to prove negligence , but with proper documentation, pictures and witnesses , a personal injury lawyer can help build a personal injury case to ensure you receive maximum compensation.

If you have suffered a sports injury and feel it is a result of someone else’snegligence, contact an Ottawa personal injury lawyer for a free consultation. The top Ottawa personal injury lawyers will be able to provide you with immediate feedback on whether or not they think you have a personal injury case or not.

Play hard and play safe !
