Ottawa Accident Bank and Slater -Serious Head Injury, Fractured Ankle, December 11

Ottawa Accident Lawyer, Ottawa Law Firm, Ottawa Lawyers- David Hollingsworth..A 30-year-old male was taken to an Ottawa hospital with serious head injuries after an Ottawa car accident at Bronson Avenue and Slater Street yesterday afternoon. Ottawa emergency crews responded to the call at 12:40 p.m. The driver of the other vehicle, a 50-year-old woman, was taken to an Ottawa hospital in stable condition with a fractured ankle. Thankfully, the man’s personal injuries are not life-threatening.  There were no passengers in either vehicle. The cause of the collision is under investigation.  My thoughts go out to these Ottawa accident victims.  A serious head injury can have devastating life-long effects. I hope that this is not the case with this man….It’s getting very slippery out there on our Ottawa roads. Please, everyone, do your best out there …Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Injury Law Firm

The symptoms of a head injury can occur immediately or develop slowly over several hours or days. Even if the skull is not fractured, the brain can bang against the inside of the skull and be bruised. The head may look fine, but complications could result from bleeding or swelling inside the skull.

When encountering a person who just had a head injury, try to find out what happened. If he or she cannot tell you, look for clues and ask witnesses. In any serious head trauma, always assume the spinal cord is also injured.

The following symptoms suggest a more serious head injury — other than a concussion or contusion — and require emergency medical treatment:

  • Changes in, or unequal size of pupils
  • Convulsions
  • Distorted features of the face
  • Fluid draining from nose, mouth, or ears (may be clear or bloody)
  • Fracture in the skull or face, bruising of the face, swelling at the site of the injury, or scalp wound
  • Impaired hearing, smell, taste, or vision
  • Inability to move one or more limbs
  • Irritability (especially in children), personality changes, or unusual behavior
  • Loss of consciousness, confusion, or drowsiness
  • Low breathing rate or drop in blood pressure
  • Restlessness, clumsiness, or lack of coordination
  • Severe headache
  • Slurred speech or blurred vision
  • Stiff neck or vomiting
  • Symptoms improve, and then suddenly get worse (change in consciousness)

Tips for staying safe at an Ottawa accident scene. Ottawa lawyer , Ottawa law firms

While most major roadways have now been salted, Ottawa roads remain a challenge. There were many Ottawa accidents this morning and late last night due to the freezing rain and Ottawa residents are being asked to take it slow after a spat of freezing rain overnight created large swaths of black ice throughout the city and a deluge of crashes. Ottawa Police were urging caution last night and this morning after a rush of collisions last night,  involving Ottawa paramedics who were busy assessing patients at Ottawa accident scenes. Much of the action was taking place on Highway 417  last night. For a period of about 30 minutes, Ottawa paramedics said they received multiple calls for Ottawa accident between Woodroffe Avenue to the west and Nicholas Street to the east. And in responding to two of those calls — despite the 30 bright LED emergency lights flashing on each of their vehicles — other motorists on the highway managed to slam into them, causing personal injuries and “severe damage” to the vehicles involved. Four Ottawa paramedics were injured and forced to fall out of Sunday night’s busy rotation after two ambulances were rear-ended. The first occurred at about 10:15 p.m. when a black Chevrolet Blazer rear-ended an ambulance in the westbound lanes with all of its emergency lights flashing, paramedics said. The lone driver of the Blazer refused to be treated by paramedics, while two paramedics were treated for personal injuries by another crew. One minute later, a paramedic superintendent of operations issued a warning to all paramedics on the road to be wary of inattentive drivers in the rapidly deteriorating road conditions. Salt trucks were also called upon for problem spots on the 417. Five minutes after that, at 10:20 p.m., a two-vehicle crash near the eastbound Nicholas Street exit quickly snared 11 drivers, paramedics said. For the safety of the injured, all patients were taken to the Sandy Hill Arena for assessment. Of them, one was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and all others were released. A third collision on the 417 was reported at 10:45 p.m. just west of Woodroffe Avenue in the eastbound lanes. Paramedics said a Honda Civic travelling too fast for icy conditions rear-ended yet another ambulance with its emergency lights flashing. The Civic sustained severe damage to its front end but its driver refused treatment. Two paramedics, meanwhile, were treated for back injuries by a second crew. Startlingly, paramedics said a nearby Ontario Provincial Police cruiser was registering speeds by passing motorists at 115 kilometres per hour. By Monday morning at about 8 a.m., paramedics said they had so far responded to an estimated 20 collisions, the majority of them minor in nature.

Tips for staying safe at an Ottawa accident scene

After the onslaught of activity, Ottawa paramedics were taking the opportunity to remind drivers about Ottawa wintertime safety in the event of an accident. They said to stay inside your vehicle — which is designed with a safety cage — at all times to avoid being swiped by other vehicles. They also said that if you see flashing lights at some kind of scene up ahead, it’s likely because the conditions there are worse. Slow down, pass with caution, be aware that paramedics working the scene are often concealed by large vehicles, and leave plenty of room by moving over at least one full lane away from the scene.

Let’s keep us all safe out there on our very slick and icy Ottawa roads ! Be careful !

Halloween safety tips, Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa personal injury and accident lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Law Firms, well it looks like this year, my kids are heading out as a bat, a princess and a unicorn..looking forward to it.   I posted this information last year but it never hurts to be reminded…Be careful out there this Hallowe’en night. We need to keep our children safe and free from injury. The Ottawa police have put out these safety tips and I thought I’d share them with you.

The night is quickly approaching when the streets will be filled with ghosts and goblins, not to mention princesses and fairies. As always, there are a few important Halloween safety guidelines that should be observed to ensure the night runs smoothly.

Around the house… Many people enjoy transforming their homes into eerie scenes. Be sure to keep the path leading up to your door free of obstacles for the little ones, especially those with masks who might have trouble seeing in dim light.

Keep pets indoors on Halloween to protect them from hazards and preventing them from being aggressive to visitors. Before you light those candles in your pumpkin, consider using inexpensive safety glow sticks. Nothing says spooky like a glowing green jack-o-lantern!

Costumes: It is important that when helping a child pick out a costume, safety should be the main concern. Wear a light-coloured or bright costume, reflective tape or arm bands to heighten visibility.
Wear a costume that is properly fitted to reduce the chance of tripping on it.
Select a costume that is constructed from flame-retardant materials. Make sure your vision is not restricted. Consider completing your costume with make-up rather than masks. Masks may require that the eye-holes be cut larger for the sake of good peripheral vision. Shoes should fit properly even if they do not go well with a costume. If a child’s costume requires the use of props, such as a flexible-plastic sword, make sure the sharp tip is cut or filed round. Glow sticks are also an excellent method to increase a child’s visibility. You might want to consider creating a fun necklace with string to ensure they will want to wear as part of their costumes. Accessorize with a flashlight!
Before the kids hit the streets, it is important that parents be aware of the route that their children plan to follow. If you are unable to take them out yourself, consider asking another parent, an older sibling or babysitter to do the honours for you. Ensuring your child is wearing a watch also allows you to establish an agreed upon curfew.

Teach your children to recognize the places along his/her route where they can obtain help: Police Station, Fire Station or any other well indicated public place.

Although tampering of loot is rare, remind children that they must have their candy inspected by their parents or guardian prior to eating them.

Some Rules for Trick or Treaters

Bring a flashlight;
Walk instead of running;
Stay on the sidewalks (If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left-hand side of the street facing traffic);
Avoid jaywalking;
Do not cut across lawns or take short-cuts;
Take masks off when walking from one house to the next;
Do not go inside houses and do not get into vehicles;
Only visit houses that are lit;
Stay away from animals you are not familiar with; and
Vandalism is not just a ‘trick’ – it is against the law and has consequences.

Avoid injury and be safe out there Ottawa !! Above all, have a safe and ghoulishly good Halloween!

Risks of Social Media: Problems for Personal Injury Lawsuits? Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth–

Please be careful of what  you put up on the Internet.  Pictures and “tweets” can often be taken out of context and misconstrued and inevitably may hurt your personal injury case.

Risks Of Social Media

Online social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube are great ways to connect with people, but can easily undermine personal injury cases.

Please be careful about which details you reveal about yourself on social media sites. Information on your pages can be used against you as evidence from Facebook  by the police, the media, and insurance companies. Insurance companies often hire private detectives to follow you.  Facebook does this work for them. Make sure to check your settings and make sure your privacy is protected. You may think posting a picture of yourself doing an activity is harmless but you never know how an insurance company can misconstrue these pictures and use them against you.

Update: Highway 7 accident August 21 -Stittsville accident

Ottawa Accident Lawyer, Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…Regrettably, one woman has died and others have suffered serious personal injury.  I wish everyone involved a full and healthy recovery. One  woman is dead and another has suffered serious personal injury and is in critical condition after a two-car Ottawa accident on Highway 7 in Ottawa’s west end yesterday afternoon. Ottawa Paramedics said there were 6 people involved in the accident, 5  in one car and one in the other. Sadly, a woman passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. 4 other people were taken to Ottawa hospital, one of them by helicopter. The sixth person was uninjured. The woman passenger who was flown to the Ottawa hospital was in critical condition, with serious personal injury. Another woman and two men have personal injuries that were not considered life threatening. The Ottawa accident happened near Jinkinson Road, which is just southwest of Stittsville.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyers: UPDATE

OTTAWA — The car crash that killed one woman on Saturday and injured two of her sisters has sent shock waves through the siblings’ large, extended family. The survivors of Claudette Clement gathered at the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus on Monday to support those injured in the car crash. Sylvie Paquette, whose mother, Yolande Charette, suffered a broken vertebrae, said the family is very close. “My mother was one of five sisters, five brothers. But, now they are only four (sisters),” Paquette said, adding that the siblings had 27 grandchildren and 33 great grandchilren in total. “We’re a good, harmonious family; we are always there for each other, it’s incredible.” Clement, 67, of Plaisance, Que., was killed in the two-vehicle accident on Hwy. 7 near Stittsville on Saturday afternoon. She had been travelling with her two sisters, Yolande, 66, and Monique Charette, 63. The car was driven by Pierre Duvall, 66, Yolande’s common-law partner.

The green 2010 Toyota Camry was travelling westbound on the highway when Duvall apparently pulled onto the right shoulder before making a left turn toward a designated emergency vehicle U-turn area. An oncoming black 2009 Hyundai Elantra then broadsided the Camry. Duvall and the two surviving sisters were taken to hospital. Duvall and Yolande suffered minor personal injury. Monique, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was listed in serious condition. Paquette said Monique was in a coma and her mother Yolande was in a lot of pain. Paquette said that due to the strong medications, her mother has not fully absorbed all the details of the crash, including Clement’s death. “It is better like that for the moment.” Clement and most of her six or seven children lived in Plaisance, Que., said Paquette, adding that Clement’s husband died four years ago. Funeral arrangements had not been finalized Monday evening.

The Hyundai’s driver, David MacDiarmid, 31, and his 33-year-old passenger were taken to hospital with minor personal injury. Police said MacDiarmid tried to slow down, but was unable to avoid the collision.Paquette said alcohol could not have been a factor in the crash as her stepfather, who had open-heart surgery eight months ago, does not drink. The crash remained under OPP investigation. © Copyright (c) The Ottawa Citizen

update:

A Western Quebec man has been charged with careless driving in connection with a fatal accident on Highway 7 in August. On August 21 a Toyota Camry travelling westbound on the highway near Jinkinson Road just west of Stittsville pulled onto the right shoulder and began to make a U-turn in a designated emergency vehicle U-turn area.

Police said an oncoming car broadsided the Camry in the midst of the U-turn.  The crash killed 67-year-old Claudette Clement of Plaisance, Que., one of three passengers in the Camry. Also injured were Clement’s two sisters, Monique and Yolande Charette. The driver of the other car and his passenger, both from Ottawa, were also treated for minor injuries. Police charged a 66-year-old man from Val Des Monts, Que., on Friday with careless driving under the highway traffic act of Ontario. He will appear in court on October 29.
