Avoiding car accidents and Highway Safety rates roof strength in rollover car accidents

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety looks at different vehicles each year and  released a study as to which rates roof strength in small SUVs. I  feel that this is an important study to keep an eye on. If I were in the market for a new vehicle ( which unfortunately I’m not !) , I would want to know which vehicles hold up best in the event of a car accident.  The study to which I am referring to looked specifically at the roofs of cars.  As a consumer, I would be thinking about rollover car accidents and how best to protect myself and my passengers.

The study rated as follows:

Good Ratings

  • Honda Element
  • Volkswagen Tiguan
  • Subaru Forester
  • Jeep Patriot

Acceptable Ratings

  • Toyota RAV4
  • Nissan Rogue
  • Suzuki Grand Vitara
  • Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Chevrolet Equinox/Pontiac Torrent

Marginal Ratings

  • Honda CR-V
  • Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute/Mercury Mariner

Poor Ratings

  • Kia Sportage/Hundai Tucson

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety statistics indicate that 10,000 people are killed every year in rollover car accidents. Obviously better built roofs do a better job at protecting their passengers , by keeping them in the vehicle .  The solid roof also helps to keep the car together on impact.

It makes a lot of sense to me.  Drive safely out there !

Ottawa Accident results in child with head injury , Pedestrian killed, – 2 Ottawa area motor vehicle accidents last night..

My thoughts and sympathies go out to both these families and friends…

Across the city, in Orleans, a young 14-year-old girl was in another serious pedestrian accident . She too was struck by a car and was treated by Ottawa paramedics for a “closed” head injury and other serious personal injuries and  brought to an Ottawa hospital in serious, but stable condition.

Avoiding Accidents on a Farm: Use safety equipment.

Did you know that last week was Farm Safety Week ?

Farming is a way of life for many Canadian and Ontario families. Many accidents occur on a farm that result in serious personal injury. It is important that if you live, work or visit a farm you are extra cautious in protecting yourself.  There are over 100 deaths and at least 1,500 personal injuries each year in Canada, from farm accidents, reports the Canadian Agricultural Injury Surveillance Program. In 2006 , according to Statistics Canada a total of 13,801 Canadian farms reported accidents that resulted in personal injuries. Guess what was the most common cause of farm-related injuries?  Yes, you guessed it,  unsafe use of equipment or material-handling practices.

Last week was National Farm Safety Week. The Canada Safety Council encouraged everyone to take precautions on the farm to prevent accidents. Personal protective equipment is an excellent safety measure in the steps to safety-proofing any farm.

Personal protective equipment such as gloves, hard hats, steel toe boots, respirators, safety glasses, safety shoes, earplugs and vests are designed to protect individuals from serious personal injuries.  Avoiding an accident  is the best way to protect everyone.  Be safe and happy farming!
