New Bauer hockey helmet aims to reduce head injuries and brain injuries, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth.
Ottawa Ontario Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth …Bauer Hockey, Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of ice hockey equipment, officially unveiled the Bauer Re-Akt helmet, the first hockey helmet designed to specifically manage the multiple type of hits in the game, including rotational-force impacts, which from what I understand, has been proven to cause significant head injuries and brain injury.
The Bauer Re-Akt helmet features the Suspend-Tech liner, a unique rotational impact protection system to protect the head from excessive rotational acceleration upon impact. The liner is made up of Extreme Impact Protection, a super-light pliable material with the ability to dissipate extreme force on impact. The free-floating stretchable liner moves independently inside the helmet, meaning better managing rotational forces.
The majority of approved hockey helmets are designed to address linear impacts; however, there has been a tremendous amount of research that indicates that the rotational force are a key contributor to a head injury .
Hockey is a very fast paced game, where there is a lot of contact. The ice is also an extremely hard surface and not one that would absorb the impact. Most impacts occur when a player is in motion, trying to make a hit, or trying to avoid a hit.
It has taken more than 2 years for this helmet to come along. The helmet features specially designed pads placed strategically in areas of the helmet where players require the most protection. Unlike other helmets in the market designed to manage only high-energy impacts, the Bauer’s new helmet is designed to manage the multiple types of hits in hockey
To date, close to 44% of all NHL players are wearing Bauer helmets. Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers, was one of the first players to wear new helmet leading up to the All-Star Game. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until most NHL players are looking for the extra protection.
Unfortunately, head injuries seem to be a part of hockey ( at least for now) . All hockey players need to protect themselves as much as possible. No helmet is going to completely prevent all concussions or head injuries, but helmets with more protection are absolutely a step in the right direction.
Bauer’s new helmet will soon be available for at retail locations worldwide in May. For more information, visit Bauer’s website. Let’s hope we start to see an immediate decrease in sport related head injuries !

This is a story of yet another tragedy in our community. This accident occurred in Ottawa and involved two men who suffered from serious personal injury secondary to their tragic accident. I hope and wish both these men a recovery and return to health and wellbeing. Both men were rushed to hospital in Ottawa secondary to a single vehicle rollover on our Highway 416 near Hunt Club Road Tuesday morning. Emergency Medical Service attendants advise that the driver lost control of the vehicle in the late morning, around 9:50 a.m. Apparently, the automobile flipped and landed on its wheels in a ditch between the northbound and southbound lanes. Scary stuff, to say the least. One occupant of the vehicle was treated for injuries including a head laceration, and a severe head injury. He is in a serious condition, but the prospects seem stable. The other motorvehicle occupant was treated for rib cage damage and is in stable condition. Both men, reported to be in their twenties in age, were taken to hospital and the police service have not immediately commented upon what may have caused the collision or whether or not the two men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
