I have come across many interesting studies over the years, related to the idea of “illusory superiority” or how most drivers generally feel, consciously or unconsciously, that they are somehow “superior behind the wheel”. This reinforces the need for safe driving practices and especially caution when on the road with aggressive drivers. The idea of “defensive driving” has also been branded in recent years to promote driving to save lives, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.

Safe Driving in Ottawa: A study at the University of Ottawa polling almost 400 drivers has produced some interesting results. The drivers ranged from the “new” to “experienced” drivers, all of whom rated themselves favourably—as you would expect given the concept of “illusory superiority”. The study confirms the idea that there is a sense of bravado out there on the roads, and I conjecture that this is an important cause of numerous unnecessary injuries in our province due to auto accidents. The problem is that drivers seem to be underestimating their own risk and overestimating their abilities, producing less cautious drivers on the road.

What to do:

The first step to handling a problem is addressing the problem itself. Countless children, grandparents, and innocent victims die or are seriously injured due to auto accidents each year and I feel that we need to have a consciousness shift in our society in order to deal with this serious and tragic phenomena. If we begin to realize that illusory superiority is a real area of concern, and we can produce skills to counteract this psychology, then we can decrease accident numbers and save lives. So are you less risky and more skill-full than your fellow drivers? Perhaps, but please reflect upon this note, and most important of all, drive safe and take care of yourself.
