Ottawa personal injury lawyer supporting Ontario pedestrian accident study.
As an Ottawa accident lawyer and Ontario personal injury lawyer, I am very pleased with the recent announcement that a new study into pedestrian deaths will be done by the Ontario Coroner’s Office. The Ontario pedestrian study is calling for Ontario residents to offer personal insight into pedestrian deaths. This brings relief to not only myself, but many families and friends who have lost a loved one in an Ontario pedestrain accident or whose loved ones have suffered serious injury such as a brain injury, spinal cord injury or broken bones. The study will hopefully reveal what many already know…we need to make our pathways safer. Some are calling for more protected, better marked pedestrian walkways on busy roadways. The Ottawa Police are also anticipating the study will help identify trends and predictors to the fatal Ottawa collisions.
Sadly, to date in 2011, 7 Ottawa pedestrians were killed in Ottawa accidents, the same number as in all of 2010. This is tragic! Not to mention that many other pedestrian accidents result in serious personal injury. The Ottawa pedestrain accident statistics are very disturbing. In 2010 there were 390 pedestrians who suffered serious personal injury in Ottawa accidents. The goal of the coroner’s probe is to identify common factors in the wrongful deaths and to make recommendations to avoid future pedestrian accidents in Ontario. The study aims to look at accident trends across Ontario, education needs, enforcement needs , engineering through cities and municipalities. The Ontario coroner’s office review will focus on deaths from 2010, with the report scheduled for release in spring 2012. In my opinion, as an Ottawa accident lawyer, this report can’t come soon enough !
The following are some statistics that relate to Ottawa pedestrain accidents:
2006 – 389, 2007 – 372, 2008 – 380, 2009 – 385, 2010 – 390
I know it goes without saying. Some accidents are out of our control. Please be extra cautious when walking on busy streets. Keep your head up, eyes open, but your phone away and focus on your surroundings. It may very well save a life.

Avoiding Ontario Accidents , Lawyer David Hollingsworth Shares Highway Driving Safety Tips
Ottawa Lawyers, Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth…Many of you will be heading out of town for this long weekend. Whatever you may be celebrating this weekend, Passover, Easter, Ridvan etc…I want to wish everyone a safe and happy long weekend. If you are hitting Ontario highways, here are a few things to keep in mind to avoid a car accident in Ontario.
-David Hollingsworth, Ontario Accident Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer
Avoiding Ontario Car Accidents: Follow Ontario Speed Limits…
For your safety and the safety of others, always obey the speed limit posted on Ontario highway signs along Ontario roads and highways, but more importantly always drive a speed that allows you stop safely. Try to drive at the same speed as traffic surrounding you without going over the speed limit. In Ontario cities, towns, villages and suburb areas where there are no posted speed limit signs, the maximum speed is 50 km/h. Elsewhere the maximum speed limit is Ontario is 80 km/h.
Ontario Accidents: Highway Driving Safety Tips:
Slow down in bad weather, in heavy traffic or in a construction zone; Slow down at night, especially on dark roads; Always follow at a safe distance, at least 2 car lengths behind the vehicle in front of you.
If you are charged for speeding at 50 km/h over the speed limit, Ontario police will suspend your licence and impound your vehicle at the roadside. Please be careful when driving through Ontario construction areas. To avoid an accident in Ontario, slow down when approaching work zones and be ready to stop at a seconds notice. Most importantly, be patient if there is traffic . If your lane is blocked , yield to the driver coming from the opposite direction. When it is clear, move slowly and carefully around the accident. Use common sense. Observing speed limits means more than obeying the posted speed: it means reacting to road conditions. When it’s raining or foggy, when ice is on the road, when traffic is heavy or when road construction is ahead, adjust your driving speed accordingly.
Ontario Car Accidents: Driving Safely on the Right….
Watch for signs on Ontario highways that read “Left Lane For Passing Only.” Slower Traffic Keep to Right: These signs let you know that the left lane on an Ontario highway is not a “fast” lane; it is a passing lane. If you pass someone, move into the right lane once you’ve safely cleared the vehicle. Slowing down the flow of traffic by continuing to drive in the left lane is not only dangerous but can result in a fine in Ontario.
Ontario Highways Accidents: Truck Accidents
Trucks can weigh close to 85,000 pounds and take extra time to stop. Drive cautiously on a highway that has several large trucks. Maintain a safe following distance. Don’t squeeze between trucks and the curb. Trucks make wide right turns, and the truck driver may not see you. When passing a truck, don’t move back into your lane until you can see both truck headlights in your rearview mirror. Make sure to give yourself enough room. Trucks have blind spots of up to 20 feet in front of the tractor, anywhere along the sides of the trailer and up to 200 feet behind the trailer. Keep that in mind. Never drive behind a truck that is backing up.
Avoid Ontario Highway Accidents by Moving Over..
When you approach an emergency vehicle with flashing lights, move a lane away , or slow down well below the posted speed limit.
Some Ontario Highway Accidents Could be Avoided From Simply Resting…
It takes a split second to lose your focus. Maybe you can’t stop yawning? Your thoughts wander or you’re drifting between lanes? You need to be alert ! Get plenty of rest before you hit Ontario highways. Get out of your vehicle and stretch your legs every so often. Take a break for 20 minutes at each stop. Yes, it will add time to your trip..but what is more important? Try to avoid driving between midnight and 6 a.m. Never drink and drive - small amounts of alcohol can impair your judgment and your reaction time.
Stop at Ontario Highway Rest Areas….
Take a break and advantage of the Ontario Highway Rest Areas and Ontario Information Centres. At most stops, you can get information on restaurants, road conditions, gas stations, snacks, area tourists stops etc…plus most often they have picnic tables and washrooms…a great place to stop for a packed lunch or snack.
Please, drive safely out there !!!

Ottawa police looking for information : Kanata accident Carp Road
Ottawa Injury Lawyer, Ontario Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth -Defensive driving helped Kyla Helpin . She says she’s lucky to be alive after a rock from a passing truck smashed her windshield, just a few km from the spot where a similar Ottawa accident recently killed an Ottawa man. Helpin was driving north on Carp Road Friday near the intersection at McGee Side Road when the accident happened and the rock bounced off her windshield. Fortunately, she did not panic and kept control of her car or the situation could have been much worse.
Sadly, the Ottawa accident occurred close the spot where Jason Birch, a father of two, was killed 5 months ago, also on Carp Road, after a large boulder came through his windshield. Investigators were unable to determine whether the rock had fallen from a passing truck or been kicked up from the road.
There are several quarries and construction companies in the Kanata area, trucks are common on Carp Road, which makes it hard to identify any particular truck in this accident. Ottawa Police are asking anyone with information concerning this Ottawa accident to contact the Collisions Investigations department at 613-236-1222, ext. 2481.

Ottawa Ontario Slip and Fall Accident Lawyers, Ontario Compensation for Slip and Fall Accidents
Ottawa slip and fall lawyers – Personal Injury Attorney David Hollingsworth explains the dangers of snow and ice that may be the of cause slip and fall accidents in Ottawa and slip and fall accidents in eastern Ontario.
How to Safely Counteract Environmental Hazards
There are many things that you can do to help prevent injury to you or your loved ones. Slip and fall injuries occur all the time, and they can happen anywhere (especially where you least expect them to occur), so it is important to be careful about where you walk and step at all times. However, there are certain circumstances where you can expect a higher rate of prospective injury, such as in conditions of ice and show during the colder months of the year. Proper footwear and clothing can help you feel more comfortable when you are out and about – and better able to deal with a circumstance if it occurs. Any shoes with good grip will help you to avoid black ice, and other situations where a slippery surface disguises itself as safe terrain to tread upon. Reflective clothing will ensure that vehicles will provide for adequate clearance to pass by you on the slipper and ice-covered roads. Personal injury for you could include broken bones, brain injury or neck injury, head injury, spinal cord injury, paralysis, and even death. “Slip and fall accidents happen in a split second and are often preventable,” says David Hollingsworth, Ottawa personal injury lawyer, Ottawa slip and fall accident lawyer. Regular snow removal, ice removeal, icing, and sanding can help to provide for a more safe condition to walk and play for you and your children in and around your community. Ice and snow are considered hazards that property owners can be found liable of if negligent in their lack of attention to a proper environment. Please ensure that you are doing your best to safeguard your interests and to protect yourselves from the risk of personal injury and harm. “If you suffer a slip and fall injury , try to document it as soon as possible,” advises experienced Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ottawa slip and fall attorney. Such documentation could include a picture of where accident occurred, highlighting how the snow and ice buildup may have caused the slip and fall accident.

DRIVER’S PSYCHOLOGY
I have come across many interesting studies over the years, related to the idea of “illusory superiority” or how most drivers generally feel, consciously or unconsciously, that they are somehow “superior behind the wheel”. This only reinforces the need for safe driving practices and especially caution when on the road with aggressive drivers. The idea of “defensive driving” has also been branded in recent years to promote driving to save lives, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.
A study at the University of Ottawa polling almost 400 drivers has produced some interesting results. The drivers ranged from the “new” to “experienced” drivers, all of whom rated themselves favourably—as you would expect given the concept of “illusory superiority”. The study confirms the idea that there is a sense of bravado out there on the roads, and I conjecture that this is an important cause of numerous unnecessary injuries in our province due to auto accidents. The problem is that drivers seem to be underestimating their own risk and overestimating their abilities, producing less cautious drivers on the road.
The first step to handling a problem is addressing the problem itself. Countless children, grandparents, and innocent victims die or are seriously injured due to auto accidents each year and I feel that we need to have a consciousness shift in our society in order to deal with this serious and tragic phenomena. If we begin to realize that illusory superiority is a real area of concern, and we can produce skills to counteract this psychology, then we can decrease accident numbers and save lives. So are you less risky and more skill-full than your fellow drivers? Perhaps, but please reflect upon this note, and most important of all, drive safe and take care of yourself.
