Ottawa Accident Lawyer: Tailgating Test..do you do it ?
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Car Accidents, Ottawa Resources, safety on May 5th, 2011
Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Personal Injury Lawyer…We all have places to go and we all want to get there as quickly as possible. I understand . Many Ottawa accidents occur as a result of tailgating. As an Ottawa injury lawyer, I am reminded too often of the dangers of tailgating.
Did you know…
What is considered tailgating?
What is a safe distance to travel behind other vehicles to avoid an Ottawa accident? Apply the two-second rule. It is the same method that is outlined in the Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s Driver’s Handbook. Use this test while driving.
- Choose an object ahead of you on the road to use as a reference point– EX: road sign, pole or tree
- Once the back-end of the vehicle ahead of you passes the reference point, start counting using steamboats.
- Count how long it takes the front of your vehicle to reach the same reference point.
- If it takes less than two seconds (or steamboats), you’re travelling too close and are risking an Ottawa accident.
Important: In wet or slippery conditions, you should allow even more time. Allow yourself time to react and stop quickly and avoid an accident and serious personal injuries.
… I came across this valuable information on the City of Ottawa’s website and thought I would share it with you. It make take a little extra time to get there, but avoiding an Ottawa accident and personal injuries….Please take your time and arrive safely…

Ottawa Lawyers: Ottawa Police aim to reduce Ottawa accidents by targeting stop sign runners and speeding.
Ottawa Lawyers David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Law Firms….Ottawa Police will have stop sign runners and motorists who speed in construction zones on their radar during the Ottawa’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) this month. Disobeying stop signs – including rolling stops – is a serious issue on Ottawa roads and can contribute to the risk of Ottawa accidents. In 2009, 1,667 Ottawa collisions at stop sign-controlled intersections resulted in one death and 462 personal injuries – 17 of them life-threatening and critical personal injuries. As for speeding in Ottawa construction zones, provincial legislation allows for the doubling of fines for Ontario motorists caught exceeding posted speed limits in construction zones when workers are present. Ottawa Police will be applying this legislation with a zero tolerance approach this month. In Ottawa, between 2007 and 2009, 526 Ottawa accidents occurred in construction zones resulting in 114 personal injuries, eight of which were serious personal injuries. One construction worker was actually struck and injured on the job by a motorist. In 2003, Public Works and Ottawa Public Health – and the Ottawa Police Service developed the IRSP to provide a comprehensive approach in promoting road safety in Ottawa.
As an Ottawa accident lawyer serving eastern Ontario, I fully support the Ottawa police and this initiative that will hopefully reduce further personal injuries and Ottawa accidents. Be safe out there !

Ontario Accident ? Ottawa Accident? When should you start a personal injury insurance claim?

How to Avoid Losing Your Prospective Settlement:
David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Ontario Personal Injury Lawyer, recommends that you learn as much as possible about your options AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you or your loved ones have been hurt in a personal injury accident. Read on to learn more.
More often than not, Ontario accident victims of a personal injury accident (such as a motor vehicle or slip and fall, etc) wait too long before seeking the help of an experienced injury lawyer. This often ruins any prospective chance of success in their case.
People wait too long before seeing a lawyer for various reasons, which may include:
Fear of the Process (Expenses, etc)
Fear of the legal process is a common concern for many people unfamiliar with the realm of personal injury law. At my law firm, I offer an initial, confidential and free consultation for all personal injury clients. I strive to help you in this consultation by learning as much as possible about your injury, your goals, and how I can help you to achieve your goals.
Embarrassment (Confidentiality)
Embarrassment can be another barrier for many seeking help after a personal injury. I always emphasize the strict professional and confidential nature of my practice; there is nothing embarrassing about the road to recovery and claim settlement; it is my job to ensure that your voice is heard, and you are given all and everything of what you rightfully deserve.
Physical considerations.
If physical considerations such as confinement to a hospital bed or home exist, I am always happy to accommodate accordingly with a free no risk consultation where you are most comfortable. I will visit you in your place of recovery to help answer your immediate questions and concerns about your situation.
Procrastination
Finally, procrastination is another unfortunate reality with many victims of personal injury. As we have discussed, waiting too long to see your injury lawyer can spell doom when it comes to the prospect of your successful settlement and recovery.
Summary
These four enumerated barriers to meeting with a lawyer can mean that your claim is ruined. “Limitation periods” can affect your ability to gain what you rightfully deserve; once a limitation period has expired, it generally prohibits you from successfully lodging a claim. In Ottawa and the province of Ontario generally, you are granted two years to advance your claim, starting from when you first knew or ought to have known you have a cause of action to advance a claim. In practice, this is generally the date of your personal injury or accident. In special circumstances, the limitation period varies. With minors, for example, the limitation period begins to run as soon as that person arrives at the age of majority.
Action
These variable circumstances emphasize the importance of consulting with an Ottawa personal injury lawyer such as David Hollingsworth as soon as you have the opportunity after your accident or personal injury. As one of the best Ottawa personal injury lawyers, I will be able to advise you and your family on the most appropriate steps to take in a situation of minor or tragic personal injury, so that you can secure and protect your valuable interests and better cope with the trauma and pain of your injury or loss. The best Ottawa personal injury lawyers can enable and empower you with the guidance and support necessary to have a smooth, and successful recovery after your accident, and to secure and protect the interests of you and your loved ones.

Top 5 Reasons to work with an Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer
Firstly, it goes without saying that the best Ottawa personal injury lawyers can not only help you get the compensation you need, they can help take care of you. They can help you get the medical and specialized treatments you need for your injury. They understand that your life has been turned upside down and you are in a very stressful situation. The best Ottawa personal injury lawyers understand that they need to put a plan in place and execute it for you, to allow you to focus on your recovery. That’s their job- the job of an Ottawa personal injury lawyer. You owe it to yourself to get the help you need…
Out of the vast amount of personal injury claims made every day, there are several general reasons behind the claims. No one case is the same, but certain circumstances will often be familiar to your Ottawa personal injury lawyer. Choosing a lawyer who is experienced in dealing with these more common personal injuries is a smart move. They will be better able to argue your case with the insurance companies because they are used to your sort of case.
- Car Accidents – When you get into a car accident that is not your fault, the results can be frustrating. Personal injury can put you out of work for days, or even months, adding further economic distress to your woes. If someone is driving negligently and hits you or your car, they are at fault for the accident, and they are responsible for paying your damages. An experienced Ottawa personal injury lawyer will stand beside you during your case and help prove the other driver’s negligence as well as the extent of your damages. Although you may end up living with the injuries you received in the accident, you can be properly compensated for your pain and mental anguish.
- Slip and Fall Accidents- Top Ottawa Personal Injury lawyers can help you get compensation when you slip or fall on private property or a business property. You may not think it, but slip and fall accidents often result in very serious personal injury. Often times, these injuries last for years and require serious rehabilitation and compensation.
- Workplace Accident/Illness – Any Ottawa personal injury lawyer can tell you that your workplace can be dangerous. Injuries sustained at work often stem from negligence on the part of your employer. If proper safety protocol was not being practiced by every employee, or if being around certain chemicals led to a potentially deadly illness like cancer, asbestos, or mesothelioma, you are entitled to just compensation for your damages. Your lawyer can work with both your company and the insurance company to ensure that you get what you deserve.
- Medical Malpractice – We all go to doctors to get better, but doctors are fallible and as a result, they can sometimes mess up big time. When the negligence of your doctor, dentist, surgeon, or anesthesiologist results in personal injury, your Ottawa personal injury lawyer can help. Recovery from medical malpractice is physical, but also psychological. When you instill trust into your medical caregiver and they are negligent, it is not uncommon to feel vulnerable and anxious. An Ottawa personal injury lawyer can assist in recovering compensation for physical and psychological damages due to your injury.
- Defective Products – Companies are liable for making their products safe for general use. If you have sustained injury from a faulty product, the company is liable for your damages. Hiring an Ottawa personal injury lawyer can ensure that the company compensates you for the injury that resulted from their negligence.
- Intentional Injury – Classified under this category would, first and foremost, be charges of assault. If someone intentionally strikes you, that is assault, and they are liable for any damage that they may cause. If a store wrongfully holds you for shoplifting, they also can be charged with intentional injury. Your basic rights are being violated when you are held against your will with no just cause, and the store would be at fault for holding you. Your Ottawa personal injury lawyer will be able to tell you if your issue merits taking the store, or someone who has purposefully assaulted you, to trial.

Ottawa Accident Lawyer : Ottawa Police Aim to Reduce Ottawa Car Accidents
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Car Accidents, Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources on January 5th, 2011
Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth….The City of Ottawa’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) is ringing in the New Year with a crackdown on tailgaters and stop sign runners. In 2009, tailgating caused 4,973 rear-end collisions – the most frequent type of Ottawa accidents accounting for 1/3 of Ottawa’s total car accidents. These Ottawa accidents resulted in one death and 1,373 personal injuries – 17 of them life-threatening personal injuries. Disobeying stop signs – including rolling stops – is also a serious issue on Ottawa roads. In 2009, 1,667 accidents at stop sign-controlled intersections resulted in one death and 462 personal injuries – 17 of them life-threatening personal injuries. Each month since 2004, STEP has been profiling and enforcing two initiatives that target specific traffic safety priorities. These initiatives support the City’s larger Integrated Road Safety Program (IRSP) public awareness and enforcement campaigns. In 2003, two City departments – Public Works and Ottawa Public Health – and the Ottawa Police Service developed the IRSP to provide a comprehensive approach in promoting road safety. Ottawa residents have identified traffic safety as a top priority. The IRSP is committed to using available resources to make Ottawa roads safer for residents.
