Attempted Child Abduction in Ottawa: tips to prepare your child on what to do when a stranger approaches

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…I don’t want to be an alarmist but my children’s school issued the following stranger alert this week and it serves as a great reminder to us all.  Please take a couple of minutes to go over this with your child.  Our children are everything and they can never be over prepared for such a situation.

On Oct. 17th, around 8:30 pm, a young 11 year old boy reported an attempted abduction at Fisher Park Community Centre. The man was described as middle-eastern looking, in his 40s, spoke English without accent, and had 2 moles on his face. He drove a car resembling a 4 door silver Chevrolet sedan. If you have more information, contact the Ottawa Police.

The safety of our children is our top priority. The following information can assist you with this conversation.

Who is a Stranger?

A stranger is anyone you don’t know. Strangers can be men, women or teenagers. If you have never met them in real life, they are a stranger! Although there are kind strangers, some strangers are not always kind and some can hurt you. A stranger who is not kind does not have to look scary. They can be good looking, clean and well dressed. There is no way to tell if someone is good just by looking at them. Bad people can pretend to be nice to try to fool you. Don’t be fooled!

Just stay away.

What should I do if a stranger tries to talk to me? Ignore them. Do not look at them or acknowledge that they have spoken to you. Walk quickly or run away from them. Go in the opposite direction as fast as you can. Go to a home of someone you know or to an area that has a lot of people.

You can dart into a store or school if you have too. Tell an adult you can trust about what happened, like a parent, a teacher, a police officer or some other grownup your parents said you can talk to.

How do strangers trick you?

Strangers who are bad people and want to hurt you have developed some pretty tricky things to do to confuse you and get you alone with them. First there is the “Help Trick“. This is when a stranger asks you to help them find a lost pet or maybe asks you for directions to get somewhere. Seems harmless enough right? That is what they want you to think. There are adults all over the place that a stranger can ask for help. Turn and walk away.

The next trick is called the “Emergency Trick”. This is a scary one for a child to be subjected too. A stranger will tell you that there is an emergency in your family and your mom or dad asked them to get you. The stranger may even say that your mom or dad got hurt. Think straight. Your mom or dad would never send a stranger to tell you news like this. Turn around and run away!

A new one that strangers are trying is the “Accident Trick”. This is when a stranger lies on the ground and looks like they have been injured and unconscious or in pain. The desire to help this person is big and kids want to help and be a hero. Do not go over to the person. They can grab you and take you away. Instead, go to someone you know and tell them about the situation or call 911 and they will come to help. You don’t need to be near the person while an adult or emergency crew come to assist. Stay away!

The “Animal Trick” is another one that is hard to resist. This is when a stranger holds a small animal and invites you to pet it. This is a trick! You are close enough for this stranger to discard the animal and grab you. The stranger might ask you to come back to their car or home and help feed the baby animal. Don’t! Turn around and runaway.

The last is called the “Bribe Trick“. This is when a stranger promises you candy, money or something else of interest. People do not give gifts to people they do not know. This is a trick. Once the stranger has you alone you are going to be hurt. Turn around and run away.

Danielle Naçu dies in tragic Ottawa cycling accident Queen Street, Ottawa bicycle accident

Ottawa Cycling Accident , Ottawa Bicycle accident, Tragically, 33-year-old Danielle Naçu was killed this morning when she was hit by an opening car door as she  biked west on Queen Street. The Ottawa cyclist, Danielle Nacu then fell onto the street and was run over by a passing vehicle. The Ottawa bicycle accident occurred at 8:56 a.m. between Metcalfe and O’Connor streets, close to 131 Queen St. Danielle Nacu was rushed to The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus trauma unit in critical condition with severe head and internal trauma. Although she had been wearing a helmet,  she sadly did not survive.  Crushed pieces of her bicycle helmet remained at the Ottawa bicycle accident scene under the car, along with her bag and some other possessions as Ottawa police investigated the Ottawa bicycle accident scene. Several people on the street and in  nearby cars rushed to help Danielle immediately after the crash. Several nearby pedestrians tried to physically lift the car off the woman and she lay trapped underneath, still breathing but not moving. Many others rushed around calling for help from anyone who may be trained in a medical field. One driver explained he was a medic and began to help the woman by covering her up by a blanket to keep her warm.

Reports also indicated that the woman who was driving the car sat on a nearby curb, crying and screaming until Ottawa police led her away for interviews.  Her male passenger in the car had dialed 911 after the Ottawa bicycle accident.

According to Ottawa paramedics Danielle Nacu had no vital signs when they arrived at the Ottawa bicycle accident scene at 8:59 a.m., and that bystanders had been aiding the victim. They immediately began treating the accident victim for  life-support. A tube and a needle were inserted and probed into one of her collapsed lungs to fill her lungs. Ottawa Firefighters also helped Ottawa paramedics. Tragically, Danielle was pronounced dead when the ambulance reached the Ottawa hospital.

Danielle Nacu’s friends have set up a Facebook site in the Ottawa cyclist’s honour and condolences are flowing in. A memorial has been erected on Queen Street where she died. Tuesday night, Ottawa  residents chained a bike, shrouded in white spray-paint, to a signpost near the Ottawa bicycle accident scene.  Ottawa residents also  dropped off flowers. Ghost bikes, as they’re known, have appeared in cities around the world where cyclists have died on roads. The goal is to remind cyclists about the dangers of cycling in traffic and  to remind drivers of cyclists’ rights on the road.

Danielle’s father Tom lies in Brampton Ontario. He told the Ottawa Citizen that he was preparing to leave for Ottawa,  to visit Danielle , as she had recently bought a condo and worked as a senior program adviser for Citizenship and Immigration Canada. He also told the Ottawa Citizen that “Danielle was a global citizen,” Tom said, taking a pause before continuing. “She was an immigration officer. She just came back from six weeks in Paris on an assignment. She’s travelled quite a bit, all over the world. She loved to travel. She was a very organized young lady, and we’re very proud of her. “She would have finished her second bachelor’s degree in April, and then she was going to take her masters.”“It’s a total shock. It’s indescribable,” he said. Danielle also had a brother, 35-year-old  Brent and her mother, Lynn Kelly.

Ottawa police have indicated that it is too early to say whether any charges will be laid in the case, or to release further details.

On Facebook Tuesday, a memorial bicycle ride was being organized for next Tuesday to mark the Danielle Naçu’s death. The ride will start at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Queen Street and Bronson Avenue, and  head slowly east along Queen to the bicycle accident scene at the corner of Metcalfe Street.

This was a terrible Ottawa bicycle accident and my thoughts and sympathy go out to the family and friends of this woman.. What a tragic loss…

Not all accidents can be avoided but please be extra cautious out there on our Ottawa roads; both as drivers and cyclists. Double and triple checking could save lives..

update Ottawa cyclist Danielle Nacy memorial service..

According to statistics compiled by Ottawa police on Thursday, 19 drivers have been charged with dooring so far this year. Twenty-five were charged in 2010, 19 in 2009 and 21 in 2008.

Danielle Nacu’s  Ottawa memorial service will take place at the All Saints’ Sandy Hill Anglican Church at 317 Chapel St., beginning at 1:30 p.m. The event will be followed by a reception. Visitations are to be held at the Kelly Funeral Home at 585 Somerset St. W. Friday’s viewing will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday’s from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

In Mississauga, there will be a funeral service for Danielle Nacu on Oct. 21 at St. Thomas à Becket Anglican Church, beginning at 11 a.m. Viewings will be held on Oct. 20 and 21 at the same church.

“Danielle was both an inspiration and an energy so rare to find in this life — ever so precious to lose,” reads her obituary. “Danielle travelled the world, personally and professionally, basking in the experiences of new cultures and the opportunity of representing the Canadian government and our nation. Hard-working, dedicated, driven and supremely kind, our little sunshine also volunteered at local missions, attended the University of Ottawa, and was nearing completion of her second degree while working full-time with Citizenship and Immigration Canada. She was fiercely passionate about the environment and rallied her community to take action in making a difference.

“Our nation has lost one of tomorrow’s leaders, our community has lost one of its great residents, our co-workers have lost a great friend, our friends have lost an inspiring force and our family has lost a great light. Danielle’s smile, compassion and genuine kindness are her legacy and will forever be the sunshine in our hearts and minds.”

Naçu leaves behind her mother, Lynn Kelly, father Tom Naçu and his wife Regina Lewis-Naçu, her only brother Brent, many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers and friends.

The family asks that condolences be made on the Facebook group “In Memory of Danielle Nacu” or the Kelly Funeral Home website.

Ottawa Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Attorney David Hollingsworth…Earlier this morning, a 54-year-old Ottawa woman suffered serious personal injury on Coventry Road when she was hit by a car in an accident.  She is in serious condition at the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus Trauma Unit. The Ottawa woman was crossing the street at Coventry near the corner of Lola about 7:30 a.m. The intersection is just east of the Ottawa baseball stadium. It was reported that she  was thrown 20 feet  in the air. She suffered very serious personal injury; including a serious head injury, an arm  compound fracture and damage to her shoulder area, and was being treated at the trauma centre at the Civic campus. A head injury can be a life altering injury and I wish her a speedy and hopefully a full recovery.

Ottawa Accident Avoided Thanks to Smart Driving, Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Motor Vehicle Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth…Just read that a peculiar Ottawa accident occurred yesterday morning. A shovel came off of what is assumed to be a truck, the shovel landed on the vehicle behind it. The shovel landed flat on the windshield severely damaging it. The driver of the car, a woman, was thankfully unharmed. She had the composure to safely pull over to the side of the road without causing any accidents. Thank goodness, had the shovel landed differently on the windshield the woman may have suffered serious injuries as opposed to a scare. It is imperative that driver’s securely tie down any objects that can come off during transportation.  Please drive safely out there !

Avoid an accident and personal injury- watch out for black ice.

Ottawa accidents and black ice. Ottawa injury lawyer   -avoiding personal injury.

It’s the last day of March break and it’s awfully cold out there today.  I’m just about to go out and hit the slopes with my son.  I’ve been skiing for a couple of days now and I’m sore and stiff !  Regardless, my son is excited, so off we go ! I hope my muscles forgive me someday.  Although it’s sunny out there..there is still a chill and with that comes black ice.

There are too many injuries in Ottawa each year due to black ice. Generally, drivers are caught unprepared. Black ice, sometimes known as “glare ice” or “clear ice” is deadly because it is difficult to see – it can sneak up on you when you least suspect. Ottawa Personal Injury lawyer David Hollingsworth shares his thoughts on how you can drive safely through the Winter season and practice safe driving habits.

Each year, there are an incredible number of Ottawa automobile accidents due to the ice conditions here in Ottawa and in Eastern Ontario. The goal is to establish safe driving habits that will protect you when you drive during black-ice season. As a preliminary, always strive to stay alert – this means that since black ice can be anywhere, it is wise to remember driving carefully, with all attention on your surroundings.

More specifically, you can stay tuned to weather and news reports that will advise drivers on particularly bad days and intersections that require careful attention. Black ice is not truly black, though it is virtually invisible to the driver’s eye, so sharp turns, and busy intersections, for example, will require extra caution to safeguard your safety and well-being. “Most accident victims don’t notice the black ice on the road until it is way too late,” says Ottawa personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth. “You have to automatically assume that if there is a slight chill in the air, there will likely be ice, SO please… slow down and avoid car accidents.”

For over 12 years, David Hollingsworth has been on Ottawa personal injury lawyer, specializing in Ottawa accidents and Ontario accidents. David’s personal injury practice focuses on Ottawa and Ontario accident victims of motor vehicle accidents, slip and fall accidents resulting in personal injury, Ontario Accident Benefits Insurance Claims, Ontario Sexual Assault Claims, Ottawa, Ontario Serious Injury Law Suits, and other Civil Litigation matters. Slip and Fall Accidents and Personal Injury Statistics, Ottawa Lawyer

David Hollingsworth – Ottawa Ontario Slip and Fall Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth on Slip and Fall Accident statistics.

Dear all, I am reflecting upon some statistics here to raise some awareness regarding the ongoing prevalence of such injuries in our communities affecting our children and loved ones. Please read on to learn and to protect yourself and your families from unnecessary tragedies that need not occur if we all join together to ensure that our houses, schools, and communities are safe. Over half a million of serious slip and fall accidents requiring hospitalization occur in North America per annum. Of this number, over 300,000 are disabling personal injuries and over 20,000 are tragic fatalities.  These alarming losses sadden me, because these deaths do not need to occur. Slip and fall accidents are the leading cause of accidents in hotels, restaurants, and public buildings, since in the majority occur on flat and level surfaces. In addition, slip and fall accidents are the second leading cause of accidental death and disability after car accidents. Slip and fall accidents account for over 20,000 deaths per year in North America. Sixth six per cent of personal injury cases for people 65 years or older were a result of a slip and fall and over seventy five per cent of slip and fall deaths occur to people 65 years of age or older.  In short, all I can say is to please be aware of your surroundings and to be as careful as possible out there and watch where your step!

– Dave

Ontario car accidents and baby car seat installation tips, Ottawa Lawyer

Ottawa Lawyers, Ottawa InjuryLawyer David Hollingsworth. As a father of three young children who are all still in car seats, I found it  astonishing that 84 % of baby and infant car seats are not  properly installed.  This  leaves our children unsafe in the event of a car accident and more likely to suffer serious personal injury. It’s important to ensure your child is properly secured in their car seat to keep them safe. The following are a couple of things you can do help ensure your child’s safety in the event of a car accident:

Don’t buy a used car seat. A used car seat may have missing parts or was involved in a previous car accident. Older car seats also expire in 6-9 years. If you do however purchase a used car seat, please call the manufacturer to verify if it is still safe.

  1. 45 degree angle: Put rear-facing car seats at a 45-degree angle. At this angle, the baby’s head is supported and its chin won’t fall to the check, blocking your baby’s airway.
  2. Snap then Wrap: Cover your baby with blankets or dress him or her warmly if it is cold outside. But, beware bulky snowsuits will be compressed in a car crashor car accident, and the baby could be ejected from the car if the harness becomes loose. Dressing the baby warmly, and buckling in, then covering the baby with blankets for warmth is safer.
  3. Center Up: The best, safest location for your baby’s car seat is in the center seat. If you have multiple children, any back seat spot is safer than the front.
  4. Double Check: Use free installation checks performed by certified technicians, such as local Ottawa fire  stations or the Ottawa police.

And of course, ALWAYS drive safely !
