Ottawa Lawyer: South March Kanata Accident -Head Injury and death Imtiaz Chowdhry
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Car Accidents, Ottawa Injury and Accidents on December 23rd, 2010
Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth..Sadly, 68-year-old Imtiaz Chowdhry was killed and her husband suffered serious personal injury in a car accident west of Ottawa near the suburb of South March yesterday. The Ottawa accident happened around 4:45 p.m. on March Road, near Terry Fox Drive, police said. The woman was a passenger in a small car that crashed into a dump truck. The car’s male driver, also 68, was treated for serious head injuries by Ottawa paramedics and taken to an Ottawa hospital. The driver of the dump truck was not hurt. My thoughts go out to these grieving families and friends. What a difficult time of a year to lose a loved one. I also wish Muhammad Akram Chowdhry a full and speedy recovery. Imtiaz Chowdhry sounded like a wonderful and loving mother..may she rest in peace..
Imtiaz Chowdhry and her husband had almost made it to their South March home early Wednesday evening when their car was T-boned by a dump truck on March Road. The crash killed Chowdhry, 63, who was sitting in the passenger seat, and sent husband Muhammad Akram Chowdhry, 68, to hospital with serious head injuries.
The couple had been turning left from March Road onto Morgan’s Grant Way in a four-door Honda Accord sometime around 4:45 p.m. when the crash occurred, collisions unit investigators said Wednesday morning. The impact, which occurred in the middle of the intersection, slammed the Accord into a nearby light standard.
Imtiaz had no vital signs when paramedics arrived, and she was declared dead at the scene. Her husband had to be extricated from the wreck by firefighters. The man driving the dump truck, who was uninjured, is 19 years old. The truck belongs to a company in the nearby community of Malwood on Dunrobin Road, northwest of South March.
Police wouldn’t say early Wednesday whether any charges were pending, but did say charges were possible. They would also not say who had the right of way at the time of the crash, citing the infancy of the collisions unit investigation.
At a Shell gas station near the scene Wednesday night, a young man sitting in a vehicle with a group of others identified himself as the driver of the dump truck, but would not give his name. He said only that he was very shaken up.
When Imtiaz Chowdhry cooked for her family, it would almost always be from scratch. “Even when she made pizza it was from scratch,” said her son Asif, 36. It was her love for both cooking and her family that led her to do this. “She was very devoted to her family, anything that the family needed, she would provide,” Asif said. Imtiaz, 63, was killed last Wednesday after the car she and her husband were in was T-boned by a dump truck on March Road in Kanata.
The crash sent her husband, Muhammad Akram Chowdhry, 68, to hospital with serious head injuries. Friends and family gathered after the crash to pay tribute to the mother of three and grandmother of five. In an e-mail containing a compilation of memories and quotes, they described Imtiaz as someone with a pure heart who was humble and always willing to help others.
“I will never forget her smile, laugh, soothing voice and most of all her big heart,” wrote her youngest son, Asim, 29. “She was the perfect mother; I can’t imagine anyone who could love her children more.” “She was a very kind, generous and loving lady — her love for her family was unending,” wrote Imtiaz’ younger brother, Muhammad Ashraf, who lives in Leesburg, Virginia. Imtiaz was buried on Friday.
Her husband, who is still in hospital recovering from his injuries, was unable to attend the funeral. Asif said his father, who goes by the name Akram, has started recognizing family and friends, but does not remember the accident. “At this time, we haven’t told him about our mother, not until he’s able to understand where he is and why he is there,” said Asif, adding that the road to recovery for his father will be a long one.
The couple moved to Ottawa from Pakistan in the early 1970s. Most recently, they were living with their youngest son, Asim, and his wife. When Asim got married about one year ago, Imtiaz, Akram and Asim decided to move from their home in the South March area to a bigger home in the same neighbourhood.
Asif remembers his parents’ home as one that was always open to family, friends and guests. Both Imtiaz and Akram were involved in community associations in the area. They would have an open house on special days such as Eid, with hundreds of people stopping by their home. Akram had been doing consultant work with the government after retiring from his job at the Canada Revenue Agency.
The couple had a routine. Each evening, Akram would leave work, get on a bus and call Imtiaz to let her know which bus he was taking. She would then pick him up at a stop in the neighbourhood or at the Eagleson park and ride. It was the same last Wednesday. After meeting Akram at the neighbourhood stop, the two were headed to the gas station.”They had an understanding — my mom didn’t like to fill up gas,” said Asif.
The couple had been turning left from March Road onto Shirley’s Brook Drive in a four-door Honda Accord sometime around 4:45 p.m. when the crash occurred. The impact, which occurred in the middle of the intersection, slammed the Accord into a nearby light standard. “Although this event is a big shock for so many people, my mother was frequently aware of her inevitable fate,” wrote Asim.
“She constantly prepared for it through prayer, good deeds and reminding us that she loved us.” For Asif’s wife, Saima, 35, Imtiaz was like another mother and one of the most caring people she knew. “She was a wonderful person with an understanding nature possessing the wisdom to listen and had a loving touch.

OTTAWA accident lawyers, Ottawa Lawyer - Ottawa Police reopened Bankfield Road from Highway 416 to William McEwen Drive around 6 p.m. Friday after a late afternoon Ottawa car accident that sent 4 people to an Ottawa hospital, including two with serious injuries and forced the closure of the stretch of road. Ottawa Police said two motor vehicles collided at around 3:30 p.m. Ottawa firefighters removed the front doors and the roof of the car to get three Ottawa accident victims out. Ottawa Accident Lawyer, Ottawa Law Firm, Ottawa Lawyers- David Hollingsworth..A 30-year-old male was taken to an Ottawa hospital with serious head injuries after an Ottawa car accident at Bronson Avenue and Slater Street yesterday afternoon. Ottawa emergency crews responded to the call at 12:40 p.m. The driver of the other vehicle, a 50-year-old woman, was taken to an Ottawa hospital in stable condition with a fractured ankle. Thankfully, the man’s personal injuries are not life-threatening. There were no passengers in either vehicle. The cause of the collision is under investigation. My thoughts go out to these Ottawa accident victims. A serious head injury can have devastating life-long effects. I hope that this is not the case with this man….It’s getting very slippery out there on our Ottawa roads. Please, everyone, do your best out there …Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Injury Law Firm
The symptoms of a head injury can occur immediately or develop slowly over several hours or days. Even if the skull is not fractured, the brain can bang against the inside of the skull and be bruised. The head may look fine, but complications could result from bleeding or swelling inside the skull.
When encountering a person who just had a head injury, try to find out what happened. If he or she cannot tell you, look for clues and ask witnesses. In any serious head trauma, always assume the spinal cord is also injured.
The following symptoms suggest a more serious head injury — other than a concussion or contusion — and require emergency medical treatment:
- Changes in, or unequal size of pupils
- Convulsions
- Distorted features of the face
- Fluid draining from nose, mouth, or ears (may be clear or bloody)
- Fracture in the skull or face, bruising of the face, swelling at the site of the injury, or scalp wound
- Impaired hearing, smell, taste, or vision
- Inability to move one or more limbs
- Irritability (especially in children), personality changes, or unusual behavior
- Loss of consciousness, confusion, or drowsiness
- Low breathing rate or drop in blood pressure
- Restlessness, clumsiness, or lack of coordination
- Severe headache
- Slurred speech or blurred vision
- Stiff neck or vomiting
- Symptoms improve, and then suddenly get worse (change in consciousness)

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Head Injuries, Ottawa Lawyers

Ottawa Ontario Brain Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Head Injury Lawyers, TBI, Traumatic Brain Injuries on the high number of serious accidents resulting in Ottawa brain injury or head injury each month here in Ottawa. A brain injury is not always preventable, but in some instances, it can be made preventable. By raising your awareness and understanding of brain injuries, you can learn to avoid these injuries for you and your loved ones.
The facts of Spinal Cord Injuries can often seem bleak. In general, damage to the brain and spinal cord can rarely be repaired. Certainly, life after a brain or spinal cord injury is never exactly the same. You will require much change to your lifestyle, including rehabilitation and care, sometimes ongoing for the rest of your life. Injuriesarea leading killer of Canadian children and youth, with half of all such deaths from injury as a result of brain injuries. Please ensure that your children are safe, since 30% of all traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are experienced by children and youth, many of whom while engaged in sports and other seemingly “innocent” recreational activities that can lead to tragedy.
In terms of the sheer cost, brain injuries can be very expensive. A severe brain injury, it has been estimated, can cost over $400,000 (as to costs to the Canadian Medical System) at the time of the accident and brain injury. There can be ongoing costs, as well, each year secondary to the brain injury accident because of indirect expenses and rehabilitative care treatments. And similar to Spinal Cord Injuries, Brain Injuries are more common in males than in females – approximately four times more frequent, to be precise.
With all this said, there is some “good news” in terms of what you can do for you and your loved ones ..there are steps you can take to protect your children, your parents, and your husband or wife from suffering a brain injury. Some steps are as simple as wearing your helmet! Bicycle helmets are as high as 88 % in preventative capability – it is essential for you to wear your helmet consistently and correctly to reduce your chance of TBI. Snow enthusiasts such as skiers and snowboarders using helmets reduce their risk for TBI by 60%. In short, researchers believe that 90% of all injuries are predictable and preventable. This means that by following this preventative steps, you can reduce your risk of injury and inspire others to do the same.

A 6 year-old boy is in critical condition with serious head injury after the minivan he was travelling in crashed into a diesel tanker truck in Ottawa Sunday morning. Ottawa police say the tanker was heading northbound on Merivale and had a green light when the van may have run a red and crashed into the rear passenger side. The boy and his three siblings inside the van were taken to the CHEO. Their father luckily suffered no personal injury and another adult passenger was taken to the Ottawa Hospital General Campus as a precaution. 4 children were in car seats and thankfully all wearing seatbelts. Starting next year, the city of Ottawa plans to require children under the age of 13 to wear helmets at municipal indoor skating rinks, but may stop short of a bylaw making helmets mandatory for children in all outdoor sports. The city of Ottawa currently makes minors wear helmets when they participate in city-run skating programs, or use the indoor skateboard park or the BMX park. The new policy will extend mandatory helmet use for children to all Ottawa public skating sessions.
Last year, doctors from Ottawa CHEO spoke to the city’s community and protective services committee about how proper helmet use can prevent children head injury and children brain injury. They noted that Ottawa emergency-room doctors at the Ottawa hospital treated more than 50 Ottawa children last year with head injury and facial injury caused by skating and tobogganing accidents. About half of them suffered concussions while the other half had injury ranging from cuts to broken jaws incurred as a result of face-plants on the ice. However, when compared to sledding and skateboarding, ice skating accounts for the most ER visits for head injury in children. That’s why the city’s parks and recreation department is recommending that helmets become mandatory for children under 13 at all supervised, indoor skating rinks.
Whether it be on skates, on a bike or on a skateboard, I encourage everyone to help keep their children safe and have them wear a helmet. If you can’t afford one, there are programs in Ottawa that can help . For more information visit www.ottawainjury.ca or email ottawainjury@live.ca

Ottawa Brain Injury Lawyer – Ontario Brain Injury Lawyers -Ottawa Traumatic Brain Injury Study Shows Increase in Spirituality Following Brain Injury
Individuals who suffer a personal injury and brain injury are likely to have an increased feeling of spirituality due to damage or personal injury of the right parietal lobe, which is the cerebral area within the brain that determines an individual’s place in time and space, both emotionally and physically, according to the latest study from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The study focused on 26 individuals with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), but who were functioning within society as the ”walking wounded.” The study revealed that those who suffered personal injury from right parietal lobe damage felt more feelings of being lost or spaced out, which was the equivalent of measuring higher on the standard measure of spirituality test. The study also revealed that Contralateral Neglect Syndrome can cause those with a brain injury to retrieve “information from the contralateral side, but patients may not have a conscious awareness” of this and therefore feel dislocated from the world.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer :
According to a new study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, a new tool may help standardize the use of CT scans in children with a minor head injury and help reduce the number of scans performed. An astonishing number as high as 650,000 children with a minor head injury resulting in loss of consciousness, amnesia, disorientation and vomiting are seen each year in emergency departments in hospitals across North American. CT scans are important for diagnosing serious brain injury but they unfortunately they expose children to the potentially harmful effects of ionizing radiation and significantly add to health care costs. Use of CT for minor head injury in Canadian pediatric emergency departments has increased to 53% in 2005 from 15% in 1995.
A team of researchers from pediatric institutions across Canada have developed the CATCH rule (Canadian Assessment of Tomography for Childhood Injury) which will help physicians determine if a child with minor head trauma should receive a CT scan or not. The study involved 3866 children from the ages of 0 to 16 from 10 Canadian pediatric teaching institutions. The idea with the new “CATCH” rule will hopefully reduce the number of children who receive a CT scan. This will not only reduce unnecessarily exposing children to possible harmful effects, it will help alleviate the wait times for CT scans and health care costs.
My understanding is that the CATCH Rule, is made up of 7 basic findings from a child’s history and physical exam. From these findings, it is easier to standardize the need for CT and reduce the number of CT scans performed in children with minor head injury.

Child Brain Injury Lawyer in Ottawa – What to do and expect…
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Brain Injury / Head Injury on February 8th, 2010
Ottawa Brain Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth explains what to expect if your child suffers from a traumatic brain injury in Ontario.
Traumatic Brian Injury ( TBI ) in Children
Ottawa Brain Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth explains what to expect if your child suffers from a traumatic brain injury in Ottawa or brain injury in Ontario. As a parent, we are ready to do anything possible to protect our children from harm, pain, or suffering. Unfortunately, we cannot protect our children from everything. If your child has suffered a traumatic brain injury (or “TBI”), you must consider your options and make actions that will be in your child’s best interests, to help them on their road to rehabilitation and recovery.
There are some things that can be expected if your child has suffered a TBI. Generally, any injury to a child, including a TBI, is extremely serious and should be treated as such. Children can be even more susceptible to brain injuries than adults, however, because a child’s brain and body are still in a state of development and a TBI can cause permanent disability and limitation in terms of functioning, movement, speech, or thought development process.
Your Child’s Medical Support Team
If you believe that your child is a victim of a TBI, your first step is to seek appropriate medical help as soon as possible. This involves consultation with various doctors, such as a general practitioner, a pediatrician, neurosurgeon, and any medical brain specialist generally, especially one that deals with children’s brain injuries. This also involves consultation with a psychologist and psychiatrist, to ensure that your child’s mental health is also assessed during this complex brain injury process. These steps will help to safeguard and protect for your child’s rehabilitation and they will also empower you and your family with options and ideas to consider in the ongoing recovery process.
Your Child’s Legal Support Team
In addition to the medical team of specialists helping to assist in your child’s recovery and rehabilitation, it is also necessary for you to enlist the help of a personal injury lawyer specializing in Traumatic Brain Injuries. A Top Children’s TBI Lawyer such as David Hollingsworth has a highly specialized expertise in this area of law. It is important to consult with an experienced Ontario brain injury lawyer that will share the process with you. Generally, the process is complex and can be painful since your Child’s Brain Injury is a real tragedy. But there are steps that you can take to deal with the situation once it has happened, to ensure for your child’s best future prospects in terms of health and happiness in mind.
How to Secure Maximum Compensation
A top Ottawa Children’s Brain Injury lawyer can help you to determine who may be responsible for your child’s TBI. If the injury is due to someone’s negligence in any capacity, then your child is entitled to maximum compensation for his or her injuries. An Ottawa personal injury lawyer or Ottawa brain injury lawyer will seek compensation for you and your child to assist in recovery.
Since brain injuries are often known as “invisible injuries”, they can be complex and difficult to fully understand and to deal with. Children, after-all, often have less developed communication capabilities and are often not able to as easily or fully nuance their symptoms, or even to understand that they have developed. A children’s TBI can be a real life altering experience for the victim of the personal injury, requiring ongoing medical treatment and rehabilitation. A good personal injury lawyer will ensure that your child’s compensation will be adequate to deal with future years to come, and this is where an experienced Ottawa brain injury lawyer is critical. Your Top Ottawa Children’s brain injury lawyer will be able to help you to secure for your child’s financial future, and also to develop a life care plan.
