Ottawa injury lawyer supports Ottawa police aiming to reduce Ottawa accidents by targeting distracted Ottawa drivers.

www.ottawainjury.ca Ottawa Injury Lawyers David Hollingsworth.. From April 17-19, 20 Ottawa Traffic Enforcement Team, monitored the intersection of Bank Street and Champlain Avenue and issued tickets to distracted Ottawa drivers.    The Ottawa Police officers monitored Ottawa traffic for a total of 81/2 hours over a period of 3 days.  In total, 240 tickets were issued: 97 for Operating a motor vehicle while using a hand-held communication device, 18 for seat belt infractions and 125 tickets for other Highway Traffic Act related offences.  The current fine for using a hand-held device while driving is $155.

I’m surprised to see so many fines .  It is so obvious that driving and talking on the phone is not worth the risk.  There are so many wireless devices on the market that allow one to talk on the phone while driving; there really are no excuses. Please do not distract yourself. Answer the call later, pull over or invest on a Bluetooth.  Drive safely out there !                                                                                              -Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Hockey : Children Brain Injury and Head Injury Concussions in children

Ottawa personal injury lawyer, Ontario personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth.  I am currently at my son’s hockey tournament in Alliston , Ontario.  These 8 year old kids are giving it their all and playing with heart.  I love watching them play hockey.  I thought it would be timely to remind everyone about hockey and concussions in children. I also wanted to remind everyone with a child is out there on the ice,  please make sure they are wearing a proper CSA approved helmet, not just the helmet that is lying around in the garage. Most of all, play safe and have fun….

Hockey is one of Canada’s most popular sports, with over 520,000 players registered in the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA) for the 2000-2001 season. The incidence of hockey-related injuries amongst children between the ages of 9 to 14 leading to emergency department visits more than doubled between since 1990.The injury incidence among teens aged 15 to 18 didn’t increase as much as that of younger children, but still grew 85 % during the same time period.

Where do injuries most often occur?

42% – head and face

27% – upper body
31% – lower body

Who gets injured?

 Defense 33% Forwards 63% Goalie 4%.

The Children’s hospital of Eastern Ontario’s website is an excellent resource for signs and symptoms of concussions.  The following inforamation is from this site: Concussions can cause a variety of symptoms, which can appear several hours after the incident. Signs and symptoms of a concussion include:

  • Confusion (your child might not know where he is or the period of the game)
  • Memory problems (forgetting what happened before or after the injury)
  • Loss of consciousness (being “knocked out”)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness/feeling dazed
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Vision problems/staring blankly/seeing stars
  • Slurred speech
  • Unusual emotions, personality change, inappropriate behaviour

There are different kinds of concussions and some may be more serious than others.

Simple concussions

  • Symptoms last less than 15 minutes after the injury.
  • Child/teen should not return to playing hockey or other sports for at least one week.

Complex concussions
Symptoms last longer than 15 minutes after the injury.

  • Symptoms return with exercise.
  • The child/teen has been knocked out.
  • Longer recovery time. Several weeks or even months before returning to playing hockey or other sports.

Again, enjoy hockey ! It is a wonderful sport.  Please be safe out there and parents be on the look out if your child does fall or you suspect they have hit their head.

Selecting the best Ottawa brain injury lawyer for your traumatic brain injury.

Ottawa brain injury lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ontario Traumatic Brain Injury Lawyers

Advice for Selecting the best Ottawa Brain Injury Lawyer

While many minor disputes can be handled in a small claims court or through an alternative dispute resolution, handling a claim for a personal injury as serious as traumatic brain injury requires the expertise and know-how of an Ottawa brain injury lawyer.  When you hire an Ottawa brain injury lawyer, you need to find someone who understands the nuances of your brain injury and has extensive experience interpreting medical diagnoses in order to present the full facts of your brain injury to your insurance adjuster or in the courtroom.

A brain injury is a very complicated legal matter because the symptoms are often “invisible.”  This is especially the case when it comes to a mild brain injury.  The vocational abilities of victims who have sustained a mild brain injuries are often severely impacted.  Victims are typically in denial about a brain injury’s impact on their lives.

Many survivors of a traumatic brain injury do not receive adequate compensation for their brain injury primarily because they hire an Ottawa brain injury lawyer who does not have the sufficient experience to present a legitimate claim for damages.   Ask your Ottawa brain injury lawyer about previous brain injury cases they have taken on. When searching for an Ottawa brain injury lawyer, research their education, training, and experience.  Determine what kind of knowledge they have about brain injury. Furthermore, find out if they are members of any trial law groups that deal with brain injury.  All of these factors will help you determine whether the lawyer’s knowledge about brain injury law and compensation is current.

Some Ottawa brain injury lawyers are willing to represent you on a contingency fee basis.  This means that the lawyer will not receive payment until you receive compensation for your brain injury.  When working on a contingency fee basis, an Ottawa brain injury lawyer receives a  % of the compensation amount. When you hire an Ottawa brain injury lawyer on a contingency fee basis, you can rest assured knowing that you are hiring an experienced, qualified Ottawa brain injury lawyer who can practically guarantee results.

Make sure to interview your Ottawa brain injury lawyer face-to-face and have plenty of questions ready to ask them so you can ascertain their qualifications.  Some important questions you may want to ask include the following:

  • How many brain injury cases have you been involved  in the last 5 years?
  • What % of personal injury cases do you take relate to brain injury?
  • What are the settlement compensation amounts you have obtained on brain injury cases in the past?

Choosing the right Ottawa brain injury lawyer is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life.  Be sure to find an Ottawa brain injury lawyer with whom you feel comfortable.  Moreover, hire an Ottawa brain injury lawyer who has the confidence and experience necessary to handle your case.  By taking the time to find a qualified Ottawa brain injury lawyer to represent you, you will be able to receive the recompose that you deserve, enabling you to meet your medical and support needs.

Almonte ATV accident results in critical personal injury, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Almonte ATV accident lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ontario ATV accidents lawyers

Regrettably, 2 young people suffered serious personal injury last Sunday in an Almonte ATV accident on Clayton Road near Almonte. The driver , who suffered critical personal injury was a 19-year-old Mississippi Mills young woman. She was driving with a  passenger;  a 21-year-old Mississippi Mills man. Unfortunately, neither were wearing safety helmets when the Almonte ATV accident occurred and they were both thrown into a nearby ditch.

Thankfully, witnesses were nearby and brought the accident victims to the Almonte Hospital.  The male passenger was treated for very serious injuries and  released over the weekend. Unfortunately, the female driver suffered very critical personal injuries and needed to be transferred to the Ottawa Civic Hospital Trauma Centre.  My thoughts are with this young girl, her friends and her family.  I hope she is able to fully recover from this terrible ATV accident.

Ottawa car accident, Child -serious head injury and remains in critical condition.

Child- head injury, serious critical injuries…Ottawa Accident,  Lawyer David Hollingsworth…update:  The Ottawa Citizen newspaper featured a beautiful picture of the family today. Luca Ruggiero remains in critical condition, 3 days following this terrible Ottawa accident.  My thoughts continue to be with this little guy and his family.  Luca suffered a very serious head injury and part of his skull had to be removed to relieve pressure caused by swelling. He is still fighting for his life. Thankkfully I can report that his parents Jimmy Ruggiero and mother Katy Hogg-Ruggerio are better and have been released from hospital and their unborn baby was unharmed. I wish little Luka a smooth, healthy and full recovery…..

A serious accident in Ottawa occurred last night.  As a father of 3 children, one that is 2 1/2 years old, I am extremely sad to report of this serious Ottawa car accident that sent a 2 1/2 year old child to an Ottawa hospital with life threatening personal injuries and possibly a serious head injury. It has been reported that he is fighting for his life. The Ottawa accident occurred at Carp Road and Richardson Side Road last night. The young boy was airlifted to CHEO . Also travelling with the young child were 2 other accident victims.  The driver had neck, arm and leg injuries, while the passenger, who was eight months pregnant, had neck injuries. Both were said to be in stable condition upon arrival at hospital.  My thoughts are with this family.  I hope to be able to report that the young boy will be ok and will recover fully from this car accident, along with the adults in the vehicle, and the unborn child.

Ottawa Brain Injury Lawyer..Brain Injury (TBI) statistics

Ottawa Brain Injury Lawyer, David Hollingsworth shares statistics on Brain Injury in Canada
Ottawa Car Accident Lawyers-

The Startling Statistics:

An alarming annual rate of about 56,000 cases of Traumatic Brain Injury are recorded in Canada, with 36,000 of these cases leading to hospitalization, 9,000 to requiring long term rehabilitation, and in 2,500 cases, death. For those that survive, 6,000 will live with disability.

Traumatic Brain Injury, also known as TBI, has become the leading cause of death and disability in Canada for children and young adults (roughly 70% of survivors are between the ages of 18 and 28). It is tragic because children and young adults have the most to lose, with a lifetime ahead of them. Statistically, the greater half of all brain injuries are the result of motor-vehicle accidents, with the secondary causes within the realm of work related injuries, slip and falls, sports, illness, firearms and assaults. Males have double the risk of traumatic brain than females, and young men generally between 14 and 24 have the highest rate of injury. Children are also at risk when it comes to bicycle related brain injuries and death. Summer months are the more common seasons for such injuries, involving children 15 years old or younger.

While most victims of TBI will live a normal life span, survivors on average must go through a decade or so of rehabilitation services. Secondary to TBI, the risk for subsequent multiple personal injury increases, within the realm of two or three times greater than someone who has never experienced TBI. In the tragic circumstance of yet another or second personal injury, the potential for a third personal injury once again increases, this time to eight times the normal average. And so on.

Be Safe:

All this to say, please drive and be safe. A car accident or personal injury can happen in a split second and change your life forever. If you or a family member has suffered a seriously injury or a wrongful death, I, David Hollingsworth, Personal Injury Lawyer in Ottawa and my Ottawa personal injury team offer heartfelt support.
