Ottawa Bicycle Accident Lawyer, Cycling Accidents Ottawa .We all want to be out on our bicycles cycling around Ottawa. There is much to see and do and getting out on a bicycle is one of the best ways of seeing our city. Of course, it is part of a healthy lifestyle, but bicycling also helps the environment. It’s important, as a cyclist in Ottawa, to be always be aware of your surroundings. Make sure your are visible and take all necessary safety precautions. As an Ottawa bicycle accident lawyer, I meet regularly with people involved in bicycle accidents who suffer very serious personal injury such as brain injury, head injury and broken bones.
In 2009, according to Transport Canada, there were a total of 41 bicycle accident fatalities, and 435 serious personal injuries related to bicycle accidents. the Canada Safety Council recommends for all bicyclists to wear an approved bicycle helmet, which can prevent up to 88 % of brain injuries. Simply put: A bicycle helmet can save your life, so why wouldn’t you wear one? There are many bicycle safety measures you can take to help keep yourself and your children safe:
1. Always wear a helmet.
2. Pay attention and avoid distractions.
3. Obey the laws and road safety rules. Cyclists have the same rights and duties as other drivers and need to follow the same traffic laws.
4. Be predictable — ride in a straight line, don’t swerve over sewers or bumps in the road, this will increase your chances of a collision with a vehicle.
5. Properly signal all turns and check behind you before completing a turn or changing lanes.
6. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights.
7. Stay visible. Be careful around parked cars and ride where drivers can see you.
8. Use lights at night and wear bright coloured clothing.
9. Be alert -Try to watch for the next move of drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists.
10. Watch for debris, potholes, grates or any road obstacles.
11. Make sure your bicycle is in good working order. Make sure your tires don’t need air, brakes must work, chains should run smoothly, and quick release wheel levers must be closed.
As a driver, there are many steps you can take to avoid a bicycle accident
1. Respect cyclists’ right to share the road and responsibilities as motorists.
2. Obey the speed limits.
3. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights.
4. Do shoulder checks, and always check blind spots for cyclist.
5. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and bicycles.
6. Yield to pedestrians and cyclists in crossways.
7. If you plan to turn right or pull into a parking space shortly ahead of a bicycle in front of you, do not pass. Allow the cyclist to pass first.
8. Signal all turns and lane changes well 30 in advance.
10. Only pass cyclists when it is safe to do so.
These cycling safety tips may seem basic but serve as a great reminder to us all. Ottawa is a wonderful city to cycle in, let’s keep it safe ! We all need to focus more on cycling safety. There are far too many very serious head injuries and other very serious personal injuries in Ottawa each year as the result of an Ottawa bicycle accidents. As one of the top Ottawa bicycle accident lawyers, I encourage everyone to have a safe and accident free summer.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth- Ontario Spinal Cord Injury Lawyer – Types of Spinal Cord Injury:
A spinal cord injury or “SCI” refers to any traumatic injury to the spinal cord. SCI injuries are extremely serious because depending on the severity, they have the potential to impair your motor functioning ability, reflexes, and sensations.
Complete vs. Incomplete Spinal Cord Injuries
SCI injuries can be classified as “complete” and “incomplete”. As the name entails, a complete SCI results in paralysis below the site of the injury, where there is no feeling or voluntary movement, and both sides of the body have become paralyzed equally. An incomplete SCI occurs when only one part of the spinal cord has become damaged (due to a tear, compression or other injury to the spine). Victims of incomplete SCI may still experience paralysis, but it will be generally partial in nature (as opposed to a complete SCI). In an incomplete SCI, some feeling and voluntary movement may be present on one or both sides of the body.
Incomplete SCI’s have become more common given relative advances in medical technology in recent history. An individual with an incomplete SCI may retain feeling in the affected area, but may still experience ongoing pain. The ongoing sensory agitation can be serious and debilitating, rending victim completely not able to function.
Each Injury is Unique and Requires Expert Attention
Some circumstances allow for more active therapy to help counteract any muscular atrophy by rebuilding muscle fiber to strengthen and support functioning. Questions to ask your Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyers
During the selection process, you may become overwhelmed with the sheer number of Ottawa personal injury lawyers. A good place to start is the local Bar Association; they can usually recommend a few lawyers that might be appropriate to your case. What falls to you, however, is investigating these lawyers to ensure you find the right one for you. You will want to interview all prospective injury lawyers and be sure to ask them plenty of questions. It usually helps to write a list of your questions beforehand and go down the list, checking off each question when you get a satisfactory answer. If, during the interview, you feel that they are brushing you off or do not have time for you, consider how you would feel if you hired them to help you and they did the same thing. The way they treat you during the interview is often reflective of how they will treat you during your case, so pay close attention.
Ask them questions about their track record. How many wins do they have out of how many cases? How often do they take cases to court? How long have they been working on cases like yours? What are typical settlements that they have won for cases like yours? While you are interviewing potential Ottawa personal injury lawyers, the answers to these questions are probably the most critical. The purpose is to ascertain how likely this lawyer is to win your case, and how far are they willing to take the case before conceding to the insurance companies. They should have far more wins than losses and they should not be afraid to take insurance companies to court.
Find out if they specialize in any specific type of injury or accident. There are Ottawa personal injury lawyers who specialize in car accidents, work-related accidents, slips/falls, and all sorts of other types of accidents or injuries. By finding out there specialization you can decide whether their specialty is in line with your type of injury. If they are a great lawyer but they specialize in car accidents, while your case is a work-related accident, they are not the best lawyer for your specific case.
Settle on a cost before starting your case. Ask each of the Ottawa personal injury lawyers how they calculate their rates. Choose a lawyer who will cover the costs of your case as it moves along, then take an agreed upon amount out of the settlement. This way you are not being charged more and more as the case proceeds and you have an agreement as to what appropriate costs for reimbursement would be. If you decide to hire this particular lawyer, make sure that you have a written and signed contract specifying the calculation of the rate and how it will be paid.
Once all of your questions have been answered, compare and contrast different Ottawa personal injury lawyers based on their responses. Based on this comparison, you can confidently select the right lawyer for you.
