Ottawa pedestrian struck Airport Parkway and rushed to Ottawa Hospital Trauma Unit.

Ottawa accident results in head injury

An Ottawa accident has left a man with a serious head injury after he was struck yesterday morning on Ottawa’s  Airport Parkway, close to Hunt Club Road. The man was described as being in his late 20s or possibly early 30s and  was walking along the parkway at the time of the accident ( 7:20 a.m.) He was rushed to the trauma unit of the Ottawa Hospital with life-threatening injuries. I hope to soon be able to report that his condition has improved.

In our personal injury practice we see the potentially life-long implications of a severe head injury.  A brain injury is an invisible injury and yet it is one of the most devastating and life-changing injuries we see in our personal injury clients.  A brain injury can completely alter someone’s personality and leave them in a state where they do not know how to control their anger and emotions. Many people don’t know how to manage themselves and often times their friends and family react the same way.  With a brain injury being an invisible injury, family and friends often think that the injuries are not that serious and that the injured is just “mad” or “unresponsive”; when in actual fact this behaviour is a direct result of a brain injury.

There are many different degrees and levels of a brain injury from mild to traumatic. What’s important to know is that if you or a loved one is suffering from a brain injury there is help and support for you and your family.  Ottawa has tremendous organisations that focus on brain injury awareness and support people with brain injuries.  Ontario Accident Benefits also provide significant benefits to people who have been in an accident in Ontario and have suffered a brain injury. No one needs to suffer with a brain injury. Our personal injury lawyers can help you not only get maximum compensation for your brain injury, but also set you up with the supports and rehabilitation you need. Let us help.

He was treated and is thankfully in stable condition at the Civic Hospital. I hope he is able to recover fully from this accident.

The effects of an amputation injury following an accident, Ottawa Ontario lawyer specializing in amputations.

Ontario Amputation Lawyer David Hollingsworth . The amputation of any body part can be devastating and have an effect on the accident victim, as well as his or her family. Life may never be the same as it once was. Suddenly, you find yourself not being able to do the same things you once did and your bills may be accumulating.  After an amputation injury, you are often times not able to return to work.

An amputation injury requires very specific support and compensation.  In Ontario most amputation injuries are defined as catastrophic injuries and therefore have many forms of compensation available to them. If someone is hurt in a motor vehicle accident, there are accident benefits provided for them under the Statutory Accident Benefits system. Someone with an amputation injury is entitled,  among other things, up to $1,000,000.00 for medical and rehabilitation treatment, $1,000,000.00 for attendant care, up to $100.00 for housekeeping and home maintenance, $400.00 /week for income replacement benefits, and compensation for pain and suffering, past and future income loss and even future medical treatment. This accident benefits compensation will be needed for the rest of your life over and above what you will receive under the Ontario Statutory Accident Benefits regime.

There are also the obvious expenses such as medical, rehabilitation, attendant care, occupational therapy, home modifications, and/or housekeeping and home maintenance that are usually required.

If you have suffered an amputation injury or  have been injured in an accident and need some help or advice, there is help.  An amputation injury requires a great deal of compensation and support.  Since 1999, we have been Ottawa personal injury lawyers  specialized in helping Ontario accident victims get the help and maximum compensation they need after suffering a personal injury such as an amputation injury. We can also help you.  Contact us at www.ottawainjury.ca and we can discuss how we can help you begin a new life after a catastrophic injury. We understand, we care and we are here to help.

Ottawa Car Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth on Ottawa car accident statistics.

Ottawa Car Accident Statistics. Sadly, there was a significant spike in fatal Ottawa accidents in 2011 with 38 people dying on Ottawa’s roads.   The number of life-threatening personal injuries dropped in 2010. Since 2006, the number of life threatening personal injuries has dropped every year. The Safer Ottawa Roads Program report indicates that the injury trend  is probably the more significant when it comes to measuring the safety of Ottawa’s roads. There’s a fine line between dying in a road accident and being seriously injury.  The report also measured the death and injury rates per 1,000 people. It showed clearly that Ottawa roads were much more dangerous back in the 1990s.  The report also breaks down personal injury and deaths from 2003 to 2010 by whether people were cycling, walking, or riding or driving in a vehicle. In both cases, slightly more than 7 /10 victims were motorists or passengers, 2/10 were pedestrians, and slightly less than 5/10 were cyclists. Let’s  do everything we can do decrease the number of Ottawa car accidents and personal injuries and death resulting from car accidents.

Ontario Accidents and Organ Donation. Will you register? Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Organ and Tissue Donation in Ontario, Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ontario Accident Lawyers

Did you know…That in Ontario consent is needed for organ donation? In Ontario consent is needed in order for your organs to be donated upon death. In other areas it is typically the other way around that consent is implied and you register if you don’t want to donate your organs upon death.

A signed organ donor card is not enough, you need to register. The registration forms are on their website “The Gift of Live” as well.

The website states your donation can save up to 8 lives and improve as many as 75 lives. The website also recommends you make your intention of whether your want your organs donated or not known to your family beforehand.

What if it is in my will? The problem with your intention being written in your will is that your will is usually not read until a later date. It is very important you register if you want to donate your tissue and organs upon death. The form allows you to indicate what you don’t want to donate.

The choice of whether or not to donate organs is very personal and often times a very difficult decision for family members to make.

Ottawa car accident : 4 teenage girls suffer serious permanent injury.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth..4 Ottawa teenagers were taken to an Ottawa hospital after a car accident on Highway 417,  southeast of Ottawa Sunday morning. Ottawa paramedics arrived at  1:27 a.m. to the Ottawa accident scene near the highway near Boundary Road, where a car with 4 girls suffered serious personal injury. Paramedics from Ottawa and Prescott-Russell treated all four patients, taking them to two different Ottawa hospitals. One passenger suffered a serious, but non-life threatening facial injury and was in serious but stable condition when she arrived at the Ottawa hospital. A 17-year old female was also listed in serious but stable condition, and the two other 17-year-olds in the vehicle were taken to hospital in stable condition. My hope is that all 4 girls recover from this terrible accident and I hope to soon report that they will recover fully.

Summer Cycling Safety Tips with Ottawa Bicyle Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Bicycle Accident Lawyer, Cycling Accidents Ottawa .We all want to be out on our bicycles cycling around Ottawa.  There is much to see and do and getting out on a bicycle is one of the best ways of seeing our city. Of course, it is part of a healthy lifestyle, but bicycling also helps the environment. It’s important, as a cyclist in Ottawa, to be always be aware of your surroundings. Make sure your are visible and take all necessary safety precautions. As an Ottawa bicycle accident lawyer, I meet regularly with people involved in bicycle accidents who suffer very serious personal injury such as brain injury, head injury and broken bones.

In 2009, according to Transport Canada,  there were a total of 41 bicycle accident fatalities, and 435 serious personal injuries related to bicycle accidents. the Canada Safety Council recommends for all bicyclists to wear an approved bicycle helmet, which can prevent up to 88 % of brain injuries. Simply put: A bicycle helmet can save your life, so why wouldn’t you wear one? There are many bicycle safety measures you can take to help keep yourself and your children safe:

1. Always wear a helmet.

2. Pay attention and avoid distractions.

3. Obey the laws and road safety rules.  Cyclists have the same rights and duties as other drivers and need to follow the same traffic laws.

4. Be predictable — ride in a straight line, don’t swerve over sewers or bumps in the road, this will increase your chances of a collision with a vehicle.

5. Properly signal all turns and check behind you before completing a turn or changing lanes.

6. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights.

7. Stay visible. Be careful around parked cars and ride where drivers can see you.

8. Use lights at night and wear bright coloured clothing.

9. Be alert -Try to watch for the next move of drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists.

10. Watch for debris, potholes, grates or any road obstacles.

11. Make sure your bicycle is in good working order. Make sure your tires don’t need air, brakes must work, chains should run smoothly, and quick release wheel levers must be closed.

As a driver, there are many steps you can take to avoid a bicycle accident

1. Respect cyclists’ right to share the road and responsibilities as motorists.

2. Obey the speed limits.

3. Come to a complete stop at  stop signs and red lights.

4. Do shoulder checks, and always check blind spots for cyclist.

5. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and bicycles.

6. Yield to pedestrians and cyclists in crossways.

7. If you plan to turn right or pull into a parking space shortly ahead of a bicycle in front of you, do not pass. Allow the cyclist to pass first.

8. Signal all turns and lane changes well 30 in advance.

10. Only pass cyclists when it is safe to do so.

These cycling safety tips may seem basic but serve as a great reminder to us all.  Ottawa is a wonderful city to cycle in, let’s keep it safe ! We all need to focus more on cycling safety.  There are far too many very serious head injuries and other very serious personal injuries in Ottawa each year as the result of an Ottawa bicycle accidents.  As one of the top Ottawa bicycle accident lawyers, I encourage everyone to have a safe and accident free summer.
