Summer Cycling Safety Tips with Ottawa Bicyle Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Ottawa Bicycle Accident Lawyer, Cycling Accidents Ottawa .We all want to be out on our bicycles cycling around Ottawa. There is much to see and do and getting out on a bicycle is one of the best ways of seeing our city. Of course, it is part of a healthy lifestyle, but bicycling also helps the environment. It’s important, as a cyclist in Ottawa, to be always be aware of your surroundings. Make sure your are visible and take all necessary safety precautions. As an Ottawa bicycle accident lawyer, I meet regularly with people involved in bicycle accidents who suffer very serious personal injury such as brain injury, head injury and broken bones.
In 2009, according to Transport Canada, there were a total of 41 bicycle accident fatalities, and 435 serious personal injuries related to bicycle accidents. the Canada Safety Council recommends for all bicyclists to wear an approved bicycle helmet, which can prevent up to 88 % of brain injuries. Simply put: A bicycle helmet can save your life, so why wouldn’t you wear one? There are many bicycle safety measures you can take to help keep yourself and your children safe:
1. Always wear a helmet.
2. Pay attention and avoid distractions.
3. Obey the laws and road safety rules. Cyclists have the same rights and duties as other drivers and need to follow the same traffic laws.
4. Be predictable — ride in a straight line, don’t swerve over sewers or bumps in the road, this will increase your chances of a collision with a vehicle.
5. Properly signal all turns and check behind you before completing a turn or changing lanes.
6. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights.
7. Stay visible. Be careful around parked cars and ride where drivers can see you.
8. Use lights at night and wear bright coloured clothing.
9. Be alert -Try to watch for the next move of drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists.
10. Watch for debris, potholes, grates or any road obstacles.
11. Make sure your bicycle is in good working order. Make sure your tires don’t need air, brakes must work, chains should run smoothly, and quick release wheel levers must be closed.
As a driver, there are many steps you can take to avoid a bicycle accident
1. Respect cyclists’ right to share the road and responsibilities as motorists.
2. Obey the speed limits.
3. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights.
4. Do shoulder checks, and always check blind spots for cyclist.
5. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and bicycles.
6. Yield to pedestrians and cyclists in crossways.
7. If you plan to turn right or pull into a parking space shortly ahead of a bicycle in front of you, do not pass. Allow the cyclist to pass first.
8. Signal all turns and lane changes well 30 in advance.
10. Only pass cyclists when it is safe to do so.
These cycling safety tips may seem basic but serve as a great reminder to us all. Ottawa is a wonderful city to cycle in, let’s keep it safe ! We all need to focus more on cycling safety. There are far too many very serious head injuries and other very serious personal injuries in Ottawa each year as the result of an Ottawa bicycle accidents. As one of the top Ottawa bicycle accident lawyers, I encourage everyone to have a safe and accident free summer.

Ottawa Lawyer: South March Kanata Accident -Head Injury and death Imtiaz Chowdhry
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Car Accidents, Ottawa Injury and Accidents on December 23rd, 2010
Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth..Sadly, 68-year-old Imtiaz Chowdhry was killed and her husband suffered serious personal injury in a car accident west of Ottawa near the suburb of South March yesterday. The Ottawa accident happened around 4:45 p.m. on March Road, near Terry Fox Drive, police said. The woman was a passenger in a small car that crashed into a dump truck. The car’s male driver, also 68, was treated for serious head injuries by Ottawa paramedics and taken to an Ottawa hospital. The driver of the dump truck was not hurt. My thoughts go out to these grieving families and friends. What a difficult time of a year to lose a loved one. I also wish Muhammad Akram Chowdhry a full and speedy recovery. Imtiaz Chowdhry sounded like a wonderful and loving mother..may she rest in peace..
Imtiaz Chowdhry and her husband had almost made it to their South March home early Wednesday evening when their car was T-boned by a dump truck on March Road. The crash killed Chowdhry, 63, who was sitting in the passenger seat, and sent husband Muhammad Akram Chowdhry, 68, to hospital with serious head injuries.
The couple had been turning left from March Road onto Morgan’s Grant Way in a four-door Honda Accord sometime around 4:45 p.m. when the crash occurred, collisions unit investigators said Wednesday morning. The impact, which occurred in the middle of the intersection, slammed the Accord into a nearby light standard.
Imtiaz had no vital signs when paramedics arrived, and she was declared dead at the scene. Her husband had to be extricated from the wreck by firefighters. The man driving the dump truck, who was uninjured, is 19 years old. The truck belongs to a company in the nearby community of Malwood on Dunrobin Road, northwest of South March.
Police wouldn’t say early Wednesday whether any charges were pending, but did say charges were possible. They would also not say who had the right of way at the time of the crash, citing the infancy of the collisions unit investigation.
At a Shell gas station near the scene Wednesday night, a young man sitting in a vehicle with a group of others identified himself as the driver of the dump truck, but would not give his name. He said only that he was very shaken up.
When Imtiaz Chowdhry cooked for her family, it would almost always be from scratch. “Even when she made pizza it was from scratch,” said her son Asif, 36. It was her love for both cooking and her family that led her to do this. “She was very devoted to her family, anything that the family needed, she would provide,” Asif said. Imtiaz, 63, was killed last Wednesday after the car she and her husband were in was T-boned by a dump truck on March Road in Kanata.
The crash sent her husband, Muhammad Akram Chowdhry, 68, to hospital with serious head injuries. Friends and family gathered after the crash to pay tribute to the mother of three and grandmother of five. In an e-mail containing a compilation of memories and quotes, they described Imtiaz as someone with a pure heart who was humble and always willing to help others.
“I will never forget her smile, laugh, soothing voice and most of all her big heart,” wrote her youngest son, Asim, 29. “She was the perfect mother; I can’t imagine anyone who could love her children more.” “She was a very kind, generous and loving lady — her love for her family was unending,” wrote Imtiaz’ younger brother, Muhammad Ashraf, who lives in Leesburg, Virginia. Imtiaz was buried on Friday.
Her husband, who is still in hospital recovering from his injuries, was unable to attend the funeral. Asif said his father, who goes by the name Akram, has started recognizing family and friends, but does not remember the accident. “At this time, we haven’t told him about our mother, not until he’s able to understand where he is and why he is there,” said Asif, adding that the road to recovery for his father will be a long one.
The couple moved to Ottawa from Pakistan in the early 1970s. Most recently, they were living with their youngest son, Asim, and his wife. When Asim got married about one year ago, Imtiaz, Akram and Asim decided to move from their home in the South March area to a bigger home in the same neighbourhood.
Asif remembers his parents’ home as one that was always open to family, friends and guests. Both Imtiaz and Akram were involved in community associations in the area. They would have an open house on special days such as Eid, with hundreds of people stopping by their home. Akram had been doing consultant work with the government after retiring from his job at the Canada Revenue Agency.
The couple had a routine. Each evening, Akram would leave work, get on a bus and call Imtiaz to let her know which bus he was taking. She would then pick him up at a stop in the neighbourhood or at the Eagleson park and ride. It was the same last Wednesday. After meeting Akram at the neighbourhood stop, the two were headed to the gas station.”They had an understanding — my mom didn’t like to fill up gas,” said Asif.
The couple had been turning left from March Road onto Shirley’s Brook Drive in a four-door Honda Accord sometime around 4:45 p.m. when the crash occurred. The impact, which occurred in the middle of the intersection, slammed the Accord into a nearby light standard. “Although this event is a big shock for so many people, my mother was frequently aware of her inevitable fate,” wrote Asim.
“She constantly prepared for it through prayer, good deeds and reminding us that she loved us.” For Asif’s wife, Saima, 35, Imtiaz was like another mother and one of the most caring people she knew. “She was a wonderful person with an understanding nature possessing the wisdom to listen and had a loving touch.

OTTAWA accident lawyers, Ottawa Lawyer - Ottawa Police reopened Bankfield Road from Highway 416 to William McEwen Drive around 6 p.m. Friday after a late afternoon Ottawa car accident that sent 4 people to an Ottawa hospital, including two with serious injuries and forced the closure of the stretch of road. Ottawa Police said two motor vehicles collided at around 3:30 p.m. Ottawa firefighters removed the front doors and the roof of the car to get three Ottawa accident victims out. Two other car occupants, a man and a woman, were also taken to an Ottawa hospital by Ottawa ambulance.
