Ottawa’s NHL All Star Weekend Schedule, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…I hope you are excited as I am to be participating in the NHL All Star weekend here in Ottawa. There is lots to do around Ottawa.

RIDEAU CANAL The world’s longest skating rink, suitably, will be the centre of many All-Star Weekend activities.

OPENING CEREMONIES tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.

The NHL All-star weekend kicks off with the Stanley Cup and several other of the league’s most prestigious trophies, including the Hart, travelling along the Rideau canal by sleigh. All are welcome to skate along with the procession, which begins at Waverly Street and ends at the Ottawa Convention Centre, where the trophies will be on display at Fan Fair.

NHL All Star fact: The last time the Stanley Cup was on the Rideau Canal was in 1905, when Harvey Pulford, a member of the Ottawa Silver Seven, drop-kicked the trophy into the water after some late-night partying.

ENERGIZER NIGHT SKATE

Friday, 7 p.m.

Participants will don headlamps as they skate a five-km route along the canal, with proceeds from the $20 (adults) and $15 (children under 12) registration fee going to the Sens Foundation’s plan to build 19 outdoor rinks in Ottawa. The event begins and ends at Waverly Street. Organizers are expecting more than 2,500 skaters for what they hope will become an annual event.

 Many NHL all-stars, including Jason Spezza, will play shinny over the next few days with friends on one of Ottawa’s outdoor rinks.

JUNIOR SKILLS COMPETITION: Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon

Canadian Tire’s national skills competition for players seven to 12 years old — they are being flown in from around the country — takes place between Rideau Street and the Mackenzie King Bridge.
Did you know? Chicago Blackhawks captain — and NHL All-Star — Jonathan Toews helped co-found the Canadian Tire Hockey School, which runs the junior skills competition.

CASINO DU LAC-LEAMY” 1 Blvd. du Casino, Gatineau

FANTASY DRAFT:Thursday, 8 to 9:30 p.m.

The All-Star Game draft — two pre-selected captains will choose lineups like kids on an outdoor rink — will be a glitzy affair at the casino. This is a great opportunity to see NHL stars up close as they walk into the event.

NHL All Star fact: Last year, Toronto Maple Leafs’ Phil Kessel was picked last in the draft. But he got a decent consolation prize — a new car, and a $20,000 donation to a charity of his choice.

 OTTAWA CONVENTION CENTRE 55 Colonel By Dr.

NHL FAN FAIR: Thursday, 3-10 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

All three floors of Ottawa’s grand new convention centre will be transformed into a giant hockey theme park. The actual time of player appearances for autographs sessions is still being worked out, but here’s a look at some of the activities lined up for Fan Fair:

  • Pose with the Stanley Cup as well as other NHL trophies;
  • Meet former NHL stars at autograph signings;
  • Take photos of your favourite NHL team mascot;
  • Collect and trade hockey memorabilia and cards;
  • Learn more about the history of the game at 30 exhibits;
  • Test your shot accuracy and other hockey skills at one of the interactive attractions

 SCOTIABANK PLACE 1000 Palladium Dr.

NHL SKILLS COMPETITION Saturday, 7 p.m.

The league’s best show off their skating, puck-handling and shooting skills. The event is sold out, but will be shown on CBC-TV.
NHL All Star fact: At this year’s Senators skills competition, Colin Greening (who will also take part in Saturday’s event) set a team record in the fastest skating competition with a time of 13.343 seconds. That gives him a good shot at winning Saturday — last year’s top time was Islanders winger Michael Grabner’s 14.238 seconds.

ALL-STAR GAME-Sunday, 4 p.m.

The busy weekend wraps up with the big game itself, which will feature four Ottawa Senators: Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza, Erik Karlsson and Milan Michalek.

NHL All Star fact: All-Star Weekend is expected to pump $30 million to $35 million into the local economy.

I plan on partaking in the NHL festivities with my son.  Enjoy the weekend Ottawa, have fun and play safe !

Ottawa Frost Bite Warning In Effect: Be careful on slippery Ottawa roads and sidewalks: Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

The freezing rain and snow have finally stopped and now a deep cold is setting in throughout Ottawa and eastern Ontario.  Ottawa, Gatineau, Brockville, Cornwall and Smiths Falls were under a snowfall warning until late afternoon, with 15 centimetres or more expected throughout the day. A freezing rain warning was lifted that morning. There were over 60 Ottawa accidents yesterday and reports indicate that some Ottawa accident victims suffered minor injuries.  Police believe that this was due to the fact that Ottawa drivers were slowing down and driving cautiously.  Well done !  Not all accidents can be avoided but this just goes to show that if all drivers out there are driving very carefully we can reduce the number of Ottawa accidents that result in serious personal injury.  To all of you out there who took a little extra time to get to your destination, or drove a little more defensively, congratulations , you did a great job.

That being said, you job is not done.  There is a frost bite warning in effect in Ottawa. Dropping temperatures and increasing winds today will give us  a -28 C wind chill. This cold cold weather looks like it’s here to stay for the day and will be as lows hit -22 C this evening. Once you add  in the windchill factor and we’re looking at -27 C , according to Environment Canada. In other words, its coooooooooooolllllllldddddddddddddddd. My advice, stay in.  It is supposed to warm up a little tomorrow.  Unfortunately, our Ottawa roads and sidewalks will be slick and slippery. This will make it very challenging for Ottawa drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

I have to admit, as much as I would like to, I can’t stay in.  We will be out about shuffling our children from hockey rinks to swimming pools. My plan..slow and steady wins the race. We will get to where we need to be , then home for the SENS game..Go Sens go !  Please be safe out there today Ottawa.  Take your time, keep our Ottawa roads as accident free as possible. Have a great, safe weekend.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth:What are income replacement benefits ( IRB ) ?

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ontario Injury Lawyers, Income Replacement Benefits..Often times  after suffering a personal injury in a  motor vehicle accident you may not be able to return to work right away. You also may not be able to provide for yourself and your family. Depending on the severity of your personal injuries, you may not be able to work for a few days, maybe a few months or perhaps even longer.  This is very stressful and this is where income replacement benefits comes in.

What are Income Replacement Benefits?

Income Replacement benefits are available to Ontario personal injury victims who were employed or self employed at the time of the motor vehicle accident in Ontario  and who, as a result of the personal injuries sustained in the Ontario accident, “suffer a substantial inability to perform the essential tasks of their employment”. This is the definition that applies for the first 2 years following a car accident in Ontario.

Following 2 years after an Ontario accident, it changes and becomes much more difficult to qualify for income replacement benefits. To continue to qualify for income replacement benefits, Ontario accident victims must  have “a complete inability to engage in any employment or self-employment for which they are reasonably suited by education, training or experience.”

How much do Ontario accident victims get for Income Replacement Benefits?

The amount of income replacement benefits received depends on a number of different factors such as one’s income before the accident.  As well as whether or not you opted to purchase additional accident benefits.

  • For motor vehicle accidents occurring after September 1, 2010, the amount of the weekly income replacement benefits is based on 70% of your gross weekly income before the accident, subject to the maximum amounts.
  • Under the standard accident benefits limits, the maximum weekly amount payable for the first 2 years following the accident in Ontario is $400 per week
  • No income replacement benefits are payable in the first 7 days following an Ontario accident
  • Optional accident benefits limits increase the maximum weekly amount to $600, $800 or $1,000 per week

How to apply for income replacement benefits…

In order to receive income replacement benefits,  Ontario accident victims  need to submit a completed

  • Application for Accident Benefits.
    •  OCF-10  Election of Income Replacement, Non-Earner or Caregiver Benefit
    • OCF-3 Disability Certificate
    • OCF-2 Employer’s Confirmation

    If you have been involved in an Ontario car accident and are unable to work, you most likely qualify for income replacement benefits. It is important that before you fill out the associated accident benefits forms that you contact an experienced Ontario personal injury lawyer .  The best Ontario personal injury lawyers not only will help you fill out these forms, they will ensure that it is done in a manner that  gets you maximum benefits support.

    Ottawa weather conditions, 10 cm of snow fall expected. Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth reminding you to drive, bike and walk safely and get out your snow tires.

    Well Ottawa..it’s coming…Ottawa’s first significant snowfall of the season is coming tomorrow night and it sounds like it could be a messy one. Environment Canada has issued a weather alert for Tuesday night that warns us all to be cautious for the first winter storm of the fall. The winter alert indicated that snow and possibly freezing rain are possible from Belleville to Prescott and Russell to Bon Echo Park, including the City of Ottawa and Gatineau. They are calling for close to ten centimetres of snow may be possible in some areas by Wednesday morning. Cold air means that precipitation will fall as either snow or a mix of snow and rain, with a chance of freezing rain.

     Please be careful out there on the roads..It’s easy to forget how slippery the roads can be.  If you don’t already have an appointment to get those winter tires on, now is the time!

    A note to pedestrians and cyclist. ..Please be extra cautious and really be aware of the cars and vehicles around you.  Wait and check before crossing the street, even if it indicates for you to go.  Cars may be skidding through that intersection.

    Ottawa pedestrian accident Montreal road results in wrongful death.

    Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Attorney David Hollingsworth — An Ottawa woman was sadly killed last night  when she was hit by a vehicle at Ottawa’s intersection of Montreal Road and Foxview Place at  7:30 p.m. Ottawa paramedics  transported the Ottawa accident victim to the Montfort Hospital, where tragically she was pronounced dead. The accident victim was crossing the street from the south side to the north side of Montreal Road when she was hit by an oncoming car.  It was reported by an observer that his  own car, a Toyota Corolla, likely blocked the view of the driver who hit the pedestrian, leaving the driver with little or no time to react. He also reported that it was too dark and happened very quickly and therefore difficult to get a good look at the Ottawa pedestrian. He was only able to say the pedestrian was wearing a red coat and a hat. Ottawa police are investigating  the Ottawa pedestrian accident. My thoughts go out to the friends and family of the deceased accident victim.

    Ottawa Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Attorney David Hollingsworth…Earlier this morning, a 54-year-old Ottawa woman suffered serious personal injury on Coventry Road when she was hit by a car in an accident.  She is in serious condition at the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus Trauma Unit. The Ottawa woman was crossing the street at Coventry near the corner of Lola about 7:30 a.m. The intersection is just east of the Ottawa baseball stadium.It was reported that she  was thrown 20 feet  in the air. She suffered very serious personal injury; including a serious head injury, an arm  compound fracture and damage to her shoulder area, and was being treated at the trauma centre at the Civic campus. A head injury can be a life altering injury and I wish her a speedy and hopefully a full recovery.
