What are the signs and symptoms of a concussion? Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer…What are the signs of a concussion? There are many different signs and symptoms of a concussion. Some are obvious and others subtle. Some conscussion signs may appear immediately and others may not be for days or even months.
The most common signs of a concussion are headache, amnesia, confusion or loss of consciousness.
Other signs and symptoms of a concussion include:
- headache or pressure in the head
- slurred speech
- loss of consciousness
- confusion
- nausea
- vomiting
- fatigue
- no recollection of event
- dizziness or blurred vision
- “ringing” in the ears
Often times, after an injury signs appear later on. Often times people with a concussion may exhibit:
- difficulty with concentration and memory
- irritability and personality changes
- eyes and ears are sensitive to light and noise
- difficulty sleeping
- depression
- tastebuds and smell are off
Symptoms of a child concussion
Head trauma or concussions are particularly hard to identify in young children, infants and toddlers because they have difficulty communicating how they feel.
Typical signs of a concussion in a child
- tires easily
- irritable or cranky
- loss of appetite
- trouble sleeping
- uninterested
- loss of balance
It is always best to have your child checked by a doctor if you suspect they may have a head injury. Because their skulls are so soft and developing, there is a greater chance of a severe head injury occurring. If your child is alert, moves normally and is able to respond, the head injury is probably mild and typically will heal. If this is the case with your child and they are tired it’s OK to let them sleep. If worrisome signs develop later and you are worried, then bring them immedicately to your doctor or emergency facility.
Bring your child immediately for emergency help if you suspect a head injury and they are exhibiting the following signs:
- vomiting
- continued persistance of a headache
- changes in behavior displaying irritability
- changes in physical coordination, including stumbling or clumsiness
- confusion: does no’t know day,events etc…
- slurred speech
- dilated or uneven pupils
- difficulty breathing
- lasting or recurrent dizziness
- discharge from nose or ears
- large head bumps or bruises
- loss of consciousness ( more than a minute)
- repeated vomiting
- seizures
- symptoms that worsen over time
Concussions and sports injury
If you have injured yourself and suspect you have a head injury , you should absolutely allow yourself to rest. Avoid playing sports or vigorous activity while signs or symptoms of a concussion are present. It is recommended that people who suspect they have a concussion should return to their sporting activity until a doctor has given them the “green light”.

Ottawa cycling- How to avoid a child bicyle accident – Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, bicycle /cycling accidents, safety on March 27th, 2012
Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth www.ottawainjury.ca Hopefully that gorgeous warm Ottawa weather we had last week will be back very soon. When the warm weather comes back so will the many children on their bicycles. It’s important to remember that these little ones haven’t formally been taught the “rules of the road”. I have a few reminders here for you to read and discuss with your child. I also wanted to remind us all to slow down when approaching these little guys on back. some of them are just learning to drive a bicycle and could veer off the sidewalk at any time. Some cyclists are also just learning the rules when it comes to sharing the road. Please be patient and extra cautious…Enjoy this upcoming spring Ottawa !
Child Cycling Safety :
-Always obey all street signs and signals.
-Always walk your bicycle while crossing the street.
-Cross the street at the corners only
-Do not drive a bicycle after dark or in dangerous weather.
-Check carefully..STOP and look to the left, to the right and then the left again before entering traffic
-Use the right-hand side of the road, and ride in the same direction as traffic. don’t double up with your friend. —Ride your bicycle single file.
-Use bicycle safety hand signals.
-Always wear bright coloured clothing and reflective clothing and accessories so cars can see you.
-Always wear a helmet and make sure it fits well.
Most of all use common safe and cycle safely !

Navan Accident results serious injury Shannon Kelly and 4 others: impaired driving charges laid
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Car Accidents, Ottawa Injury and Accidents on March 26th, 2012
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…A terrible Ottawa accident has left Shannon Kelly with severe personal injuries but thankfully she survived. The 18-year-old student at the University of Ottawa was out with several friends and left a party in Orleans on Saturday night. that’s when things went sideways. As a result of the Ottawa accident , Shannon Kelly now has a fractured sternum, lacerations to her forehead, back pain, stitches in her eyebrow, a lot of swelling.
Shannon is sending out an important message to us all. She g0t into a car with someone who had been drinking. She wasnt fully aware of how much or whether or not the driver had been drinking. She assumed it was fine and got into the car. A decision she now regrets. Thankfully she survived. A lesson for us all. 4 people were injured in the car. One of them was initially in critical condition but now thankfully appears to be making a recovery. This accident could have had very different results.
The accident occurred near Navan on Innes Road near Frank Kenny Road when it rolled over several times. Paramedics received a 911 call at around 1:20 am. Witnesses to the accident said that the car was travelling at least 160 km/h when it passed them as they drove along Innes Road. The speed limit is 80 km/h along that stretch of road.. The driver was a friend of Shannon’s. He is now facing criminal charges. She does not blame him for the choices she made. James McCarthy, who is 20 years old is being charged with 2 counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
Shannon’s story serves as a reminder to us all. Yes, she has suffered some very serious injuries but she is alive and so are her friends thankfully. To all the kids out there, please learn from this story..You can always call a cab, your parents, a friend or sleep over. You cannot get into a car with someone who has been drinking. It’s not an option. As a parent of three, this story also resonates with me….

Constance Bay accident hit and run death Erin Vance Memorial Fund
Ottawa personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth..Tragically, 26-year-old Erin Vance was killed after a hit-and-run accident in Constance Bay early this morning. Erin was a mother to twin five-year-old boys and enjoyed horse riding. Originally from Dunrobin, Erin Vance died while walking along Bayview Drive . She was walking with her boyfriend Justin Hammond, who tried to save her life by pushing her out of harm’s way. Sadly, the vehicle still hit her and the driver fled the accident scene on foot. Police were still looking for him as of about 10 a.m. Sunday. Erin is described as a loving mother, hard-working, friendly, popular, and patient . Vance had a horse named Connor which she had bought two years ago. The employees plan to auction off the horse, with the money going to support her two very young boys. Anyone with information regarding this accident is asked to contact the police. My thoughts go out to Erin’s family, her friends and especially her young boys.
update: Jeremy Rees, 23, who knew Erin and was at the same St Patrick’s day party surrendered himself to Ottawa police Monday afternoon. He was with his Ottawa lawyer. He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene.
The Erin Vance Memorial Fund was set up to raise money for her two young sons, Liam and Caleb. Donations can be made at any Scotiabank. There is also a fundraiser scheduled for April 21 at the Carp Arena.
