Ottawa Motor Vehicle Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth…Just read that a peculiar Ottawa accident occurred yesterday morning. A shovel came off of what is assumed to be a truck, the shovel landed on the vehicle behind it. The shovel landed flat on the windshield severely damaging it. The driver of the car, a woman, was thankfully unharmed. She had the composure to safely pull over to the side of the road without causing any accidents. Thank goodness, had the shovel landed differently on the windshield the woman may have suffered serious injuries as opposed to a scare. It is imperative that driver’s securely tie down any objects that can come off during transportation. Please drive safely out there !

Ottawa Lawyers: Ottawa Police aim to reduce Ottawa accidents by targeting stop sign runners and speeding.
Ottawa Lawyers David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Law Firms….Ottawa Police will have stop sign runners and motorists who speed in construction zones on their radar during the Ottawa’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) this month. Disobeying stop signs – including rolling stops – is a serious issue on Ottawa roads and can contribute to the risk of Ottawa accidents. In 2009, 1,667 Ottawa collisions at stop sign-controlled intersections resulted in one death and 462 personal injuries – 17 of them life-threatening and critical personal injuries. As for speeding in Ottawa construction zones, provincial legislation allows for the doubling of fines for Ontario motorists caught exceeding posted speed limits in construction zones when workers are present. Ottawa Police will be applying this legislation with a zero tolerance approach this month. In Ottawa, between 2007 and 2009, 526 Ottawa accidents occurred in construction zones resulting in 114 personal injuries, eight of which were serious personal injuries. One construction worker was actually struck and injured on the job by a motorist. In 2003, Public Works and Ottawa Public Health – and the Ottawa Police Service developed the IRSP to provide a comprehensive approach in promoting road safety in Ottawa.
As an Ottawa accident lawyer serving eastern Ontario, I fully support the Ottawa police and this initiative that will hopefully reduce further personal injuries and Ottawa accidents. Be safe out there !

Are your tires safe? It’s worth checking.. Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth shares
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Accident Benefits Insurance Claims, Ottawa Injury and Accidents, safety on March 13th, 2011
Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth, The Canada Safety Council’s website put out the following information about tire safety. When the roads are slick and icy, your tires mean everything. Please take a moment to read this post. -Ottawa Car Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Tires are without a doubt the most critical safety component on a vehicle. Where the rubber meets the road affects traction, handling, steering, stability and braking. Because of this, a sudden tire failure can have serious consequences, especially if it occurs at highway speeds in a vehicle with a high centre of gravity.
Are your tires safe? Under inflation is the leading cause of tire failure. Twenty-three per cent of vehicles have at least one tire under-inflated by more than 20 per cent. An under-inflated tire may not be visibly noticeable; however, they are more prone to damage and failure and contribute to higher fuel costs. The right amount of air for your tires is specified by the vehicle manufacturer and is usually shown on the vehicle door edge, doorpost, glove box door or fuel door. It is also listed in the owner’s manual.
It’s up to you. The vehicle owner is responsible for prevention of tire failure caused by improper inflation. Many people seldom ever check their tires. That’s why all 2008 and newer vehicles now have the “Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems” to alert the driver if a tire is low. TPMS isn’t mandatory in Canada , and so far, there are no plans to make it so. Transport Canada says it is monitoring the effectiveness of TPMS and will not rule out the possibility of mandatory requirement, but also says that it will make no decisions before looking at several issues, including false or no warnings, sensor battery life, long-term system durability, and the extremely low numbers of tire failures cited in fatal collisions.
Check Tire pressure. So even though your vehicle is equipped with TPMS, you should still check your tire pressure once a month and before any longer trips. Tires do not last forever, even if the tread shows little visible wear. As rubber ages, it loses elasticity, hardens and can become brittle. The reinforcing cords inside a tire can also deteriorate and lose strength. This increases the risk of a sudden tire failure the older the tire gets. After ten years, the risk of failure goes up sharply. Because of this, many safety experts say tires that are more than six years old have expired and should be replaced regardless of how much tread is left on the tires.
Did You Know? All tires sold in Canada have a tire identification number moulded into the sidewall. This number provides tire retailers specific manufacturing information about when and where the tire was made. The first two characters following DOT indicate the manufacturer and plant code; the third and fourth characters are the tire size code. The fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth are optional. The final four give the manufacturing date. For example, 2602 indicates that the tire was manufactured in the twenty-sixth week of 2002. The maple leaf following the number indicates that the tire was made in Canada and certifies that it meets Transport Canada requirements.
Ok, my fellow Ontario drivers…get out there and check those tires !!!!!!!!

Ottawa Ontario Slip and Fall Accident Lawyers, Ontario Compensation for Slip and Fall Accidents
Ottawa slip and fall lawyers – Personal Injury Attorney David Hollingsworth explains the dangers of snow and ice that may be the of cause slip and fall accidents in Ottawa and slip and fall accidents in eastern Ontario.
How to Safely Counteract Environmental Hazards
There are many things that you can do to help prevent injury to you or your loved ones. Slip and fall injuries occur all the time, and they can happen anywhere (especially where you least expect them to occur), so it is important to be careful about where you walk and step at all times. However, there are certain circumstances where you can expect a higher rate of prospective injury, such as in conditions of ice and show during the colder months of the year. Proper footwear and clothing can help you feel more comfortable when you are out and about – and better able to deal with a circumstance if it occurs. Any shoes with good grip will help you to avoid black ice, and other situations where a slippery surface disguises itself as safe terrain to tread upon. Reflective clothing will ensure that vehicles will provide for adequate clearance to pass by you on the slipper and ice-covered roads. Personal injury for you could include broken bones, brain injury or neck injury, head injury, spinal cord injury, paralysis, and even death. “Slip and fall accidents happen in a split second and are often preventable,” says David Hollingsworth, Ottawa personal injury lawyer, Ottawa slip and fall accident lawyer. Regular snow removal, ice removeal, icing, and sanding can help to provide for a more safe condition to walk and play for you and your children in and around your community. Ice and snow are considered hazards that property owners can be found liable of if negligent in their lack of attention to a proper environment. Please ensure that you are doing your best to safeguard your interests and to protect yourselves from the risk of personal injury and harm. “If you suffer a slip and fall injury , try to document it as soon as possible,” advises experienced Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ottawa slip and fall attorney. Such documentation could include a picture of where accident occurred, highlighting how the snow and ice buildup may have caused the slip and fall accident.

Ottawa Injury Lawyer shares Ontario winter driving safety tips to avoid accidents and personal injury.
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Car Accidents, Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources, safety on February 16th, 2011
Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Injury Lawyer…I came across this information on the Canada Safety Council website and thought I would share this timely information. It’s very icy out there Ottawa, please drive safely….
Winter Driving Tips
Winter driving can sometimes be a daunting task, especially when conditions are snowy or icy. Follow these steps to keep yourself safe and collision free during the next few blustery winter months.
Step 1: Make sure that your vehicle is prepared for winter driving.
- Winter tires are a good option, as they will provide greater traction under snowy or icy conditions.
- Keep a snow brush/scraper in your car, along with possible emergency items such as a lightweight shovel, battery jumper cables, and a flashlight.
- Make sure that mirrors, all windows, and the top of your vehicle, are free of snow or frost before getting onto the road.
Step 2: Drive smoothly and slowly
- Don’t make any abrupt turns or stops when driving. Doing so will often cause your vehicle to lose control and skid.
- Driving too quickly is the main cause of winter collisions. Be sure to drive slowly and carefully on snow and ice covered roads.
Step 3: Don’t tailgate.
- Tailgating becomes much worse in winter weather. Stopping takes much longer on snowy and icy roads than on dry pavement, so be sure to leave enough room between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
Step 4: Brake before making turns.
- Brake slowly to reduce speed before entering turns. Once you have rounded the corner you can accelerate again.
Step 5: Learn how to control skids.
- When skidding, you actually need to go against your natural instincts and turn into the skid and accelerate. Doing so transfers your vehicle’s weight from the front to the rear and often helps vehicles to regain control.
Step 6: Lights On.
- Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
Step 7: No Cruise Control.
- Never use cruise control if conditions are snowy, icy, or wet, because if your car hydroplanes, your car will try to accelerate and you may lose control of your vehicle.
Step 8: Don’t “pump” the brakes.
- If your vehicle is equipped with an anti-lock breaking system (ABS), do not “pump” the brakes. Apply constant pressure and let the system do its work.
Step 9: Pay attention.
- Manoeuvres are more difficult to make in the snow. Be sure to anticipate what your next move is going to be to give yourself lots of room for turns and stopping.

Ottawa Injury Lawyer , Skating Safety and avoiding head injury …Many of you may be heading to Ottawa’s Winterlude Festivale to enjoy the joys of winter at Winterlude, with three fun-filled weekends from February 4 to 21, 2011. Canada’s favourite winter activities are featured across Ottawa and Gatineau at this annual event. From glittering ice carvings and majestic snow sculptures to a gigantic snow playground and explosive shows under the winter sky, Winterlude is a great way to celebrate and enjoy the winter season. Experience the Rideau Canal – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest skating rink.
As an Ottawa personal injury lawyer and a father of three I want to remind you to please make sure your children are wearing helmets and set an example for your children by wearing one yourself !
Parents should ensure helmets fit well and are strapped on correctly until they are completely off the ice. Emergency-room doctors at the hospital treated more than 50 Ottawa children last year with head injury and facial injuries caused by ice skating and tobogganing accidents in Ottawa; half of which suffered concussions while the other half had personal injuries ranging from cuts to broken jaws incurred as a result of face-plants on the ice.
Kids and adults can borrow helmets and wrist guards for free with the rental of a pair of skates along the Rideau Canal Skateway.
Have a great time and please skate safely .

Will a focus on dangerous driving reduce Ottawa accidents ? Lawyer David Hollingsworth hopes..

Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth – The Ottawa Police Services has released that drivers who are distracted with electronic hand-held devices such as a blackberry or making dangerous lane changes are coming under close scrutiny of the Ottawa’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) next month .
I was surprised to learn that between 2007 and 2009, driver distraction was either fully or partially the cause of 5,800 car accidents in Ottawa, Ontario. Regrettably, these car accidents resulted in 7 deaths and 1,952 personal injuries. Hhhhmmm…
Dangerous lane changes are also reported as a serious issue. In 2009 1,162 accidents that were reported in Ottawa were the direct result of dangerous lane changes. These accidents resulted in 142 personal injuries and one fatality. Again, these are disturbing statistics.
As an Otttawa car accident lawyer I meet daily with accident victims with very serious personal injuries resulting from car accidents. I fully support these initiatives and hope that we see fewer Ottawa car accidents as a result. Some situations are completely out of our control and others are. Be safe and drive carefully.

Ottawa Accident Bank and Slater -Serious Head Injury, Fractured Ankle, December 11
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents on December 12th, 2010
Ottawa Accident Lawyer, Ottawa Law Firm, Ottawa Lawyers- David Hollingsworth..A 30-year-old male was taken to an Ottawa hospital with serious head injuries after an Ottawa car accident at Bronson Avenue and Slater Street yesterday afternoon. Ottawa emergency crews responded to the call at 12:40 p.m. The driver of the other vehicle, a 50-year-old woman, was taken to an Ottawa hospital in stable condition with a fractured ankle. Thankfully, the man’s personal injuries are not life-threatening. There were no passengers in either vehicle. The cause of the collision is under investigation. My thoughts go out to these Ottawa accident victims. A serious head injury can have devastating life-long effects. I hope that this is not the case with this man….It’s getting very slippery out there on our Ottawa roads. Please, everyone, do your best out there …Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Injury Law Firm
The symptoms of a head injury can occur immediately or develop slowly over several hours or days. Even if the skull is not fractured, the brain can bang against the inside of the skull and be bruised. The head may look fine, but complications could result from bleeding or swelling inside the skull.
When encountering a person who just had a head injury, try to find out what happened. If he or she cannot tell you, look for clues and ask witnesses. In any serious head trauma, always assume the spinal cord is also injured.
The following symptoms suggest a more serious head injury — other than a concussion or contusion — and require emergency medical treatment:
- Changes in, or unequal size of pupils
- Convulsions
- Distorted features of the face
- Fluid draining from nose, mouth, or ears (may be clear or bloody)
- Fracture in the skull or face, bruising of the face, swelling at the site of the injury, or scalp wound
- Impaired hearing, smell, taste, or vision
- Inability to move one or more limbs
- Irritability (especially in children), personality changes, or unusual behavior
- Loss of consciousness, confusion, or drowsiness
- Low breathing rate or drop in blood pressure
- Restlessness, clumsiness, or lack of coordination
- Severe headache
- Slurred speech or blurred vision
- Stiff neck or vomiting
- Symptoms improve, and then suddenly get worse (change in consciousness)

Ottawa Children and Personal Injuries..Ottawa Lawyer shares statistics.
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources on November 15th, 2010
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth. Hey Ottawa..I came across some startling statistics that relate to Ottawa area children and personal injuries. Did you know that injuries kill more Canadian children than all diseases combined ? Unintentional injury is the number one cause of death for kids ages 1 to 14. As many as half of injury-caused deaths are from traumatic brain injury. Hospitalizations of youth due to traumatic injury in the Ottawa region have gone up every year since 2006-2007, from 598 to 663. There have been 1,900 traumatic injuries to people under age 20 in the region since 2006. On average, close to 300 children aged 14 and under die each year as a result of an injury, but stats from 2005 show 720 died. Roughly 21,000 kids are hospitalized for serious injuries every year in Canada. One out of every five kids taken to CHEO’s ER is there as a result of an injury. CHEO only sees 40% of the region’s injured children. The three leading causes of injury-related deaths for children are drowning (15%), motor vehicle collisions (14%) and suffocation (13%). Falls are the biggest cause of injury-related hospitalizations for children, making up 37% of injuries — 45% if you include playground falls.
In the Ottawa region, there were 728 youth who were hospitalized for falls between 2006 and 2009. The next most common cause of youth hospitalization in the Ottawa region is car crashes of which there have been 310 since 2006. Since 2006, there have been 133 youth hospitalized for intentionally hurting themselves. It’s estimated that every dollar invested in a helmet saves $30 health care costs and not tomention LIVES. Boys are 4 times more likely to be injured as girls. About 90% of all injuries are predictable and preventable.
Let’s do everything we can can to keep our kids safe ! They are everything!!!
