Ottawa personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth….Kaladar OPP have charged a transport truck driver in an accident on Highway 7 that caused the death of Jonathan Charbonneau of Horton Township, near Renfrew. Charged with dangerous driving causing death is 26-year-old Jaspal Athwal of Brampton. Several other people were injured in the crash.
Earlier report: Tragically one person is dead after an Ontario car accident crash between two tractor-trailers and a Greyhound bus this morning. It happened about 4:30 a.m. on Highway 7 just east of Kaladar. Police say a tractor trailer pulled out to pass the bus when it slammed into another trailer travelling in the opposite direction. The tractor trailers collided and one of them then hit the bus. Sadly, three other people were taken to an area hospital with serious personal injuries.

Ottawa weather conditions, 10 cm of snow fall expected. Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth reminding you to drive, bike and walk safely and get out your snow tires.
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources, safety on November 21st, 2011
Well Ottawa..it’s coming…Ottawa’s first significant snowfall of the season is coming tomorrow night and it sounds like it could be a messy one. Environment Canada has issued a weather alert for Tuesday night that warns us all to be cautious for the first winter storm of the fall. The winter alert indicated that snow and possibly freezing rain are possible from Belleville to Prescott and Russell to Bon Echo Park, including the City of Ottawa and Gatineau. They are calling for close to ten centimetres of snow may be possible in some areas by Wednesday morning. Cold air means that precipitation will fall as either snow or a mix of snow and rain, with a chance of freezing rain.
Please be careful out there on the roads..It’s easy to forget how slippery the roads can be. If you don’t already have an appointment to get those winter tires on, now is the time!
A note to pedestrians and cyclist. ..Please be extra cautious and really be aware of the cars and vehicles around you. Wait and check before crossing the street, even if it indicates for you to go. Cars may be skidding through that intersection.

What’s in your winter emergency car kit? , Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworths shares…
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Personal Injury Claims, safety on November 16th, 2011
Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…A car break down or accident is never good, but it is worse during the winter months. A few inexpensive items kept in your car during winter months can help increase your safety and the safety of your loved ones. It is always wise to have an emergency kit in your car in case you ever need it. I came across some information on a website dedicated to cars and car safety, written by Aaron Gold. I thought I would share it with you as a reminder to us all as we head into the colder winter months here in Ottawa.
In the event of an emergency…
1. Get assistance !
Roadside assistance: Most new cars include a roadside assistance program which will provide towing if your car breaks down. The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is probably the best-known and most reliable third-party roadside assistance program in Canada.
Mobile phone and car charger: If you don’t have a mobile phone, and if you can, buy an inexpensive pre-paid unit to keep in your car so you can call for assistance. Make sure you have a car charger; some phones can also be charged from your car’s USB port.
OnStar: On many new cars, the OnStar system can get a live operator on the phone with the press of a button, and will automatically summon help if your car’s airbags deploy. Don’t forget, OnStar relies on the vehicle electrical system, so carry a cell phone as a backup.
2. Stay safe !
Emergency flares and/or hazard triangles: Winter accidents often result in damage to your car’s taillights, which means your hazard flashers will not work. In a snowstorm, other cars may not see your car until it’s too late to avoid it. Set out flares or hazard triangles to warn cars and avoid a second collision. If your car goes off the road in deeper snow, these items can also help emergency services find you and your vehicle.
First aid kit - Bad weather may delay emergency workers, so it’s a good idea to carry a basic first aid kit.
Small LED flashlight: Don’t rely on the vehicle’s electrical system for light — if it’s working, LEAVE IT-you want to conserve the car’s battery as long as possible. LED flashlights use much less energy than regular incandescent flashlights, making them a great choice for your emergency kit. The Mini Maglite LED is more expensive than many small flashlights, but its construction makes it well worth the price.
3. Stay warm
Emergency blanket: Cars use the engine to produce heat, so if the engine breaks, so does the heater. Even if the engine is working – say, after a car accident – running it can be dangerous, because if the exhaust system has rust holes or damage, fatal exhaust fumes can creep back into the passenger compartment. Besides, your car may not be the safest place to be in an emergency. Emergency blankets are small, light and cheap. Buy extras if you frequently travel with passengers.
Ski hats: Experts say that 30 to 40 % of body heat can be lost through the head. Carry a few inexpensive winter hats, large enough to cover the ears.
4. Keep busy !
Children’s books or games: If you travel with children, keep a few emergency children’s activities stowed away to fight boredom and keep the kids occupied while you wait for rescue.
Non-perishable snacks: Munchies help pass the time and will keep your energy and morale up while you wait for rescue.
Where to carry your emergency kit?
The most logical place to store your emergency kit would be the trunk. The problem is if you’re in an accident that damages the rear end of the car, you may not be able to get the trunk open. Instead, carry your emergency kit in a small duffel bag stored in the passenger’s footwell, where it can be easily accessed by the driver . If your kit includes flares and you travel with children, store the flares in the trunk and keep a backup hazard triangle in the bag.
Most importantly , stay safe !!!

Ottawa personal injury lawyer supporting Ontario pedestrian accident study.
As an Ottawa accident lawyer and Ontario personal injury lawyer, I am very pleased with the recent announcement that a new study into pedestrian deaths will be done by the Ontario Coroner’s Office. The Ontario pedestrian study is calling for Ontario residents to offer personal insight into pedestrian deaths. This brings relief to not only myself, but many families and friends who have lost a loved one in an Ontario pedestrain accident or whose loved ones have suffered serious injury such as a brain injury, spinal cord injury or broken bones. The study will hopefully reveal what many already know…we need to make our pathways safer. Some are calling for more protected, better marked pedestrian walkways on busy roadways. The Ottawa Police are also anticipating the study will help identify trends and predictors to the fatal Ottawa collisions.
Sadly, to date in 2011, 7 Ottawa pedestrians were killed in Ottawa accidents, the same number as in all of 2010. This is tragic! Not to mention that many other pedestrian accidents result in serious personal injury. The Ottawa pedestrain accident statistics are very disturbing. In 2010 there were 390 pedestrians who suffered serious personal injury in Ottawa accidents. The goal of the coroner’s probe is to identify common factors in the wrongful deaths and to make recommendations to avoid future pedestrian accidents in Ontario. The study aims to look at accident trends across Ontario, education needs, enforcement needs , engineering through cities and municipalities. The Ontario coroner’s office review will focus on deaths from 2010, with the report scheduled for release in spring 2012. In my opinion, as an Ottawa accident lawyer, this report can’t come soon enough !
The following are some statistics that relate to Ottawa pedestrain accidents:
2006 – 389, 2007 – 372, 2008 – 380, 2009 – 385, 2010 – 390
I know it goes without saying. Some accidents are out of our control. Please be extra cautious when walking on busy streets. Keep your head up, eyes open, but your phone away and focus on your surroundings. It may very well save a life.

Ottwa Lawyer David Hollingsworth: Ottawa Accident results with 4 Ottawa teens in hospital: head injury, fractured pelvis and back injuries
Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…Regrettably, there was an Ottawa accident on Highway 417 eastbound at Boundary road early Sunday morning involving 4 young Ottawa residents…The vehicle rollover accident was on Hwy 417 just before 3 a.m. A young 15-year-old female who was ejected from the car and was rushed to an Ottawa hospital to be treated for a fractured pelvis and she was in very serious condition. Also, an 18-year-old male passenger was taken to an Ottawa hospital in serious condition with a serious and possibly catastrophic head injury, and two 19-year-old males were taken to Ottawa with severe back injuries but thankfully, they are in stable condition.

Avoiding Catastrophic Injury and Accidents: Dangers of drowsy driving. Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Resources, safety on November 7th, 2011
Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…A startling new survey revealed that nearly a third of drivers in the last month had driven a vehicle when they were tired and they had difficulty keeping their eyes open. The survey was commissioned by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a not-for-profit organization “dedicated to saving lives and reducing injuries on the road.” Although 32 % of the survey participants admitted to drowsy driving, 96 % of those same drivers said drowsy driving is unacceptable behaviour. What’s even more frightening is that 41 % admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a study last year that revealed that 1/6 deadly fatal accidents and 1/8 accidents causing serious injury involved a drowsy driver. This clearly indicates a need to educate drivers about the dangers of drowsy driving. It may seem basic and simple, yet the numbers indicate it is not.
Tips from the AAA to help tired drivers avoid an accident:
Please, drive safely out there !!

Attempted Child Abduction in Ottawa: tips to prepare your child on what to do when a stranger approaches
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Resources, safety on October 20th, 2011
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…I don’t want to be an alarmist but my children’s school issued the following stranger alert this week and it serves as a great reminder to us all. Please take a couple of minutes to go over this with your child. Our children are everything and they can never be over prepared for such a situation.
On Oct. 17th, around 8:30 pm, a young 11 year old boy reported an attempted abduction at Fisher Park Community Centre. The man was described as middle-eastern looking, in his 40s, spoke English without accent, and had 2 moles on his face. He drove a car resembling a 4 door silver Chevrolet sedan. If you have more information, contact the Ottawa Police.
The safety of our children is our top priority. The following information can assist you with this conversation.
Who is a Stranger?
A stranger is anyone you don’t know. Strangers can be men, women or teenagers. If you have never met them in real life, they are a stranger! Although there are kind strangers, some strangers are not always kind and some can hurt you. A stranger who is not kind does not have to look scary. They can be good looking, clean and well dressed. There is no way to tell if someone is good just by looking at them. Bad people can pretend to be nice to try to fool you. Don’t be fooled!
Just stay away.
What should I do if a stranger tries to talk to me? Ignore them. Do not look at them or acknowledge that they have spoken to you. Walk quickly or run away from them. Go in the opposite direction as fast as you can. Go to a home of someone you know or to an area that has a lot of people.
You can dart into a store or school if you have too. Tell an adult you can trust about what happened, like a parent, a teacher, a police officer or some other grownup your parents said you can talk to.
How do strangers trick you?
Strangers who are bad people and want to hurt you have developed some pretty tricky things to do to confuse you and get you alone with them. First there is the “Help Trick“. This is when a stranger asks you to help them find a lost pet or maybe asks you for directions to get somewhere. Seems harmless enough right? That is what they want you to think. There are adults all over the place that a stranger can ask for help. Turn and walk away.
The next trick is called the “Emergency Trick”. This is a scary one for a child to be subjected too. A stranger will tell you that there is an emergency in your family and your mom or dad asked them to get you. The stranger may even say that your mom or dad got hurt. Think straight. Your mom or dad would never send a stranger to tell you news like this. Turn around and run away!
A new one that strangers are trying is the “Accident Trick”. This is when a stranger lies on the ground and looks like they have been injured and unconscious or in pain. The desire to help this person is big and kids want to help and be a hero. Do not go over to the person. They can grab you and take you away. Instead, go to someone you know and tell them about the situation or call 911 and they will come to help. You don’t need to be near the person while an adult or emergency crew come to assist. Stay away!
The “Animal Trick” is another one that is hard to resist. This is when a stranger holds a small animal and invites you to pet it. This is a trick! You are close enough for this stranger to discard the animal and grab you. The stranger might ask you to come back to their car or home and help feed the baby animal. Don’t! Turn around and runaway.
The last is called the “Bribe Trick“. This is when a stranger promises you candy, money or something else of interest. People do not give gifts to people they do not know. This is a trick. Once the stranger has you alone you are going to be hurt. Turn around and run away.

Summer Cycling Safety Tips with Ottawa Bicyle Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth
Ottawa Bicycle Accident Lawyer, Cycling Accidents Ottawa .We all want to be out on our bicycles cycling around Ottawa. There is much to see and do and getting out on a bicycle is one of the best ways of seeing our city. Of course, it is part of a healthy lifestyle, but bicycling also helps the environment. It’s important, as a cyclist in Ottawa, to be always be aware of your surroundings. Make sure your are visible and take all necessary safety precautions. As an Ottawa bicycle accident lawyer, I meet regularly with people involved in bicycle accidents who suffer very serious personal injury such as brain injury, head injury and broken bones.
In 2009, according to Transport Canada, there were a total of 41 bicycle accident fatalities, and 435 serious personal injuries related to bicycle accidents. the Canada Safety Council recommends for all bicyclists to wear an approved bicycle helmet, which can prevent up to 88 % of brain injuries. Simply put: A bicycle helmet can save your life, so why wouldn’t you wear one? There are many bicycle safety measures you can take to help keep yourself and your children safe:
1. Always wear a helmet.
2. Pay attention and avoid distractions.
3. Obey the laws and road safety rules. Cyclists have the same rights and duties as other drivers and need to follow the same traffic laws.
4. Be predictable — ride in a straight line, don’t swerve over sewers or bumps in the road, this will increase your chances of a collision with a vehicle.
5. Properly signal all turns and check behind you before completing a turn or changing lanes.
6. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights.
7. Stay visible. Be careful around parked cars and ride where drivers can see you.
8. Use lights at night and wear bright coloured clothing.
9. Be alert -Try to watch for the next move of drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists.
10. Watch for debris, potholes, grates or any road obstacles.
11. Make sure your bicycle is in good working order. Make sure your tires don’t need air, brakes must work, chains should run smoothly, and quick release wheel levers must be closed.
As a driver, there are many steps you can take to avoid a bicycle accident
1. Respect cyclists’ right to share the road and responsibilities as motorists.
2. Obey the speed limits.
3. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights.
4. Do shoulder checks, and always check blind spots for cyclist.
5. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and bicycles.
6. Yield to pedestrians and cyclists in crossways.
7. If you plan to turn right or pull into a parking space shortly ahead of a bicycle in front of you, do not pass. Allow the cyclist to pass first.
8. Signal all turns and lane changes well 30 in advance.
10. Only pass cyclists when it is safe to do so.
These cycling safety tips may seem basic but serve as a great reminder to us all. Ottawa is a wonderful city to cycle in, let’s keep it safe ! We all need to focus more on cycling safety. There are far too many very serious head injuries and other very serious personal injuries in Ottawa each year as the result of an Ottawa bicycle accidents. As one of the top Ottawa bicycle accident lawyers, I encourage everyone to have a safe and accident free summer.
