Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth On Snowy Weather and Safe Driving
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth ..Ottawa weather…It looks like more snow is on the way Ottawa. We can expect close to 5 to 7 centimetres of snow today. Several Ottawa accidents have already been reported :
Ottawa Accident: An SUV was involved in an Ottawa accident on River Road, south of Earl Armstrong Road.
Ottawa Accident: A car lost control on Greenbank Road near Fallowfield Road and ended up in the ditch.
Other Ottawa Accidents : Ottawa Paramedics responded to several Ottawa accidents overnight.
Its is currently snowing and very windy out there. This will have a direct impact on driving conditions and Ottawa roads. Its important that we all adjust our driving to the current Ottawa weather conditions.
Driving safely on snowy and icy roads
- Slow down and leave yourself lots of room to stop. Allow at least 3X more space between you and other vehicles in front of you.
- Always brake gently and slowly to avoid skidding. If your wheels lock up, gently ease off the brakes.
- Keep lights on and clean to increase your visibility to other motorists.
- Stay in low gears for best traction.
- Avoid using cruise control on icy roads.
- Be extra cautious on bridges, overpasses and side roads, which will freeze first. Even when temperatures are above freezing, these roads can cause very dangerous situations.
- Never pass snow plows, salt or sand trucks. You never know what is ahead of them. It’s not worth risking an accident.
- Most of all, use common sense.
Please, drive and arrive safely out there on Ottawa roads….

Ottawa accident leaves woman in critical condition: Ottawa police need our help.
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth …Ottawa Police need our help. They are looking for any witnesses to help in their investigation of an Ottawa accident on Woodroffe avenue that left a pedestrian woman with critical injuries at the corner of Woodroffe Avenue and Iris Street during yesterday’s afternoon’s rush hour.
The 40-year-old woman remains in an Ottawa hospital in critical condition as a result of being struck and pinned beneath the City of Ottawa snow plow. Ottawa Police are trying to figure out how the terrible Ottawa accident happened and are looking for any help they can get. Ottawa paramedics said the woman suffered serious critical injuries, which included internal injuries and broken legs. She never regained consciousness between the time they treated her and when they rushed her to got her to the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus.
A passerby at the scene of the Ottawa accident called 911 and was instrumental in stopping traffic once she realised the woman was caught between the wheels of the City of Ottawa’s salt truck. As she came to the Ottawa accident scene , she noticed the driver was crouched down beside the injured woman, while another passerby came and stayed with the woman, holding her until Ottawa emergency crews arrived at the scene of the Ottawa accident.
My thoughts are with this woman and her family. If you have any information at all that relates to this terrible Ottawa accident, please contact the Ottawa police .

Ottawa Frost Bite Warning In Effect: Be careful on slippery Ottawa roads and sidewalks: Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Ottawa Resources, safety on January 14th, 2012
The freezing rain and snow have finally stopped and now a deep cold is setting in throughout Ottawa and eastern Ontario. Ottawa, Gatineau, Brockville, Cornwall and Smiths Falls were under a snowfall warning until late afternoon, with 15 centimetres or more expected throughout the day. A freezing rain warning was lifted that morning. There were over 60 Ottawa accidents yesterday and reports indicate that some Ottawa accident victims suffered minor injuries. Police believe that this was due to the fact that Ottawa drivers were slowing down and driving cautiously. Well done ! Not all accidents can be avoided but this just goes to show that if all drivers out there are driving very carefully we can reduce the number of Ottawa accidents that result in serious personal injury. To all of you out there who took a little extra time to get to your destination, or drove a little more defensively, congratulations , you did a great job.
That being said, you job is not done. There is a frost bite warning in effect in Ottawa. Dropping temperatures and increasing winds today will give us a -28 C wind chill. This cold cold weather looks like it’s here to stay for the day and will be as lows hit -22 C this evening. Once you add in the windchill factor and we’re looking at -27 C , according to Environment Canada. In other words, its coooooooooooolllllllldddddddddddddddd. My advice, stay in. It is supposed to warm up a little tomorrow. Unfortunately, our Ottawa roads and sidewalks will be slick and slippery. This will make it very challenging for Ottawa drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
I have to admit, as much as I would like to, I can’t stay in. We will be out about shuffling our children from hockey rinks to swimming pools. My plan..slow and steady wins the race. We will get to where we need to be , then home for the SENS game..Go Sens go ! Please be safe out there today Ottawa. Take your time, keep our Ottawa roads as accident free as possible. Have a great, safe weekend.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth:What are income replacement benefits ( IRB ) ?
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Accident Benefits Insurance Claims, Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Personal Injury Claims on January 10th, 2012
Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth, Ontario Injury Lawyers, Income Replacement Benefits..Often times after suffering a personal injury in a motor vehicle accident you may not be able to return to work right away. You also may not be able to provide for yourself and your family. Depending on the severity of your personal injuries, you may not be able to work for a few days, maybe a few months or perhaps even longer. This is very stressful and this is where income replacement benefits comes in.
What are Income Replacement Benefits?
Income Replacement benefits are available to Ontario personal injury victims who were employed or self employed at the time of the motor vehicle accident in Ontario and who, as a result of the personal injuries sustained in the Ontario accident, “suffer a substantial inability to perform the essential tasks of their employment”. This is the definition that applies for the first 2 years following a car accident in Ontario.
Following 2 years after an Ontario accident, it changes and becomes much more difficult to qualify for income replacement benefits. To continue to qualify for income replacement benefits, Ontario accident victims must have “a complete inability to engage in any employment or self-employment for which they are reasonably suited by education, training or experience.”
How much do Ontario accident victims get for Income Replacement Benefits?
The amount of income replacement benefits received depends on a number of different factors such as one’s income before the accident. As well as whether or not you opted to purchase additional accident benefits.
- For motor vehicle accidents occurring after September 1, 2010, the amount of the weekly income replacement benefits is based on 70% of your gross weekly income before the accident, subject to the maximum amounts.
- Under the standard accident benefits limits, the maximum weekly amount payable for the first 2 years following the accident in Ontario is $400 per week
- No income replacement benefits are payable in the first 7 days following an Ontario accident
- Optional accident benefits limits increase the maximum weekly amount to $600, $800 or $1,000 per week
How to apply for income replacement benefits…
In order to receive income replacement benefits, Ontario accident victims need to submit a completed
- OCF-10 Election of Income Replacement, Non-Earner or Caregiver Benefit
- OCF-3 Disability Certificate
- OCF-2 Employer’s Confirmation
If you have been involved in an Ontario car accident and are unable to work, you most likely qualify for income replacement benefits. It is important that before you fill out the associated accident benefits forms that you contact an experienced Ontario personal injury lawyer . The best Ontario personal injury lawyers not only will help you fill out these forms, they will ensure that it is done in a manner that gets you maximum benefits support.

Happy new year 2012
What’s in your winter emergency car kit? , Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworths shares…
Posted by Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, Ottawa Accident Lawyer, David Hollingsworth in Ottawa Injury and Accidents, Personal Injury Claims, safety on November 16th, 2011
Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…A car break down or accident is never good, but it is worse during the winter months. A few inexpensive items kept in your car during winter months can help increase your safety and the safety of your loved ones. It is always wise to have an emergency kit in your car in case you ever need it. I came across some information on a website dedicated to cars and car safety, written by Aaron Gold. I thought I would share it with you as a reminder to us all as we head into the colder winter months here in Ottawa.
In the event of an emergency…
1. Get assistance !
Roadside assistance: Most new cars include a roadside assistance program which will provide towing if your car breaks down. The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is probably the best-known and most reliable third-party roadside assistance program in Canada.
Mobile phone and car charger: If you don’t have a mobile phone, and if you can, buy an inexpensive pre-paid unit to keep in your car so you can call for assistance. Make sure you have a car charger; some phones can also be charged from your car’s USB port.
OnStar: On many new cars, the OnStar system can get a live operator on the phone with the press of a button, and will automatically summon help if your car’s airbags deploy. Don’t forget, OnStar relies on the vehicle electrical system, so carry a cell phone as a backup.
2. Stay safe !
Emergency flares and/or hazard triangles: Winter accidents often result in damage to your car’s taillights, which means your hazard flashers will not work. In a snowstorm, other cars may not see your car until it’s too late to avoid it. Set out flares or hazard triangles to warn cars and avoid a second collision. If your car goes off the road in deeper snow, these items can also help emergency services find you and your vehicle.
First aid kit - Bad weather may delay emergency workers, so it’s a good idea to carry a basic first aid kit.
Small LED flashlight: Don’t rely on the vehicle’s electrical system for light — if it’s working, LEAVE IT-you want to conserve the car’s battery as long as possible. LED flashlights use much less energy than regular incandescent flashlights, making them a great choice for your emergency kit. The Mini Maglite LED is more expensive than many small flashlights, but its construction makes it well worth the price.
3. Stay warm
Emergency blanket: Cars use the engine to produce heat, so if the engine breaks, so does the heater. Even if the engine is working – say, after a car accident – running it can be dangerous, because if the exhaust system has rust holes or damage, fatal exhaust fumes can creep back into the passenger compartment. Besides, your car may not be the safest place to be in an emergency. Emergency blankets are small, light and cheap. Buy extras if you frequently travel with passengers.
Ski hats: Experts say that 30 to 40 % of body heat can be lost through the head. Carry a few inexpensive winter hats, large enough to cover the ears.
4. Keep busy !
Children’s books or games: If you travel with children, keep a few emergency children’s activities stowed away to fight boredom and keep the kids occupied while you wait for rescue.
Non-perishable snacks: Munchies help pass the time and will keep your energy and morale up while you wait for rescue.
Where to carry your emergency kit?
The most logical place to store your emergency kit would be the trunk. The problem is if you’re in an accident that damages the rear end of the car, you may not be able to get the trunk open. Instead, carry your emergency kit in a small duffel bag stored in the passenger’s footwell, where it can be easily accessed by the driver . If your kit includes flares and you travel with children, store the flares in the trunk and keep a backup hazard triangle in the bag.
Most importantly , stay safe !!!

Ottwa Lawyer David Hollingsworth: Ottawa Accident results with 4 Ottawa teens in hospital: head injury, fractured pelvis and back injuries
Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…Regrettably, there was an Ottawa accident on Highway 417 eastbound at Boundary road early Sunday morning involving 4 young Ottawa residents…The vehicle rollover accident was on Hwy 417 just before 3 a.m. A young 15-year-old female who was ejected from the car and was rushed to an Ottawa hospital to be treated for a fractured pelvis and she was in very serious condition. Also, an 18-year-old male passenger was taken to an Ottawa hospital in serious condition with a serious and possibly catastrophic head injury, and two 19-year-old males were taken to Ottawa with severe back injuries but thankfully, they are in stable condition.
It’s always so frightening to hear of these terrible Ottawa car accidents involving young people. I hope to soon be able to report much better news relating to their well-being.
