More snow coming Ottawa ! Leave those snow tires on.

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyers David Hollingsworth and Associates.  You may think spring is just around the corner here in Ottawa but you may have to wait a little longer.  Don’t out your shovels and snow tires away yet. There is a storm system making it’s way towards Ottawa and is likely to hit us late tonight. Yes, that’s right…more snow. It should start tonight and continue tomorrow. It is expected that the Ottawa area will get at least 15 centimetres of snow, possibly more. I wanted to remind everyone to adjust their driving and be aware of the weather conditions.  Driving in a snowstorm and heavy snow can be dangerous. As an Ottawa personal injury lawyer,I can tell you that there are far too many accidents that could potentially be avoided if all drivers followed some basic guidelines for winter driving.

If you are feeling unsafe, pullover and get assistance.

Slow down during inclement weather.

Make sure to clear your car off and that you have excellent visibility on the front , back and side windows.

Clear off the roof of your car, as sudden stops may send large amounts of snow down your windows and may affect your visibility. Clearing off your roof also ensures you aren’t putting others at risk with large pieces of ice and snow flying off your vehicle while driving.

Watch out for black ice.

We will undoubtedly be faced with difficult driving conditions tonight and tomorrow morning in Ottawa and surrounding areas.  Please drive safely and take your time.

Ottawa Injury Lawyer on driving safety in eastern Ontario.

It’s that time of year again when the roads become more dangerous and we are also spending more time on the roads visiting friends. In light of the recent freezing rain conditions here in Ottawa , I thought I would help provide a few reminders when it comes to travel safety…

What to have with you in difficult winter driving conditions in Ontario…

Be prepared and have a first aid kit in your vehicle at all times with:

  •  ice scraper
  •  snow brush
  •  matches
  • candles
  •  flashlights
  •  flares
  • non-perishable snacks
  • rope
  • maps
  • booster cables
  • safety shovel
  • winter boots
  • blankets
  • gloves
  • cell phone
  • Have a HELP sign (to be placed on back of window)

What to do in difficult winter driving conditions in Ontario…

  • Keep windows, mirrors and lights free of obstructions.
  • Check  headlamps,  signals and tail lights are clear of  snow and ice
  • Clear off your car entirely, including side mirrors.
  • Install snow tires.
  • Add gas line anti-freeze to the fuel-tank when refueling in extremely cold weather.
  • Keep gas tank always be over 1/2 full.
  • Make sure you have properly functioning  windshield wipers.
  • Keep windshield washer fluid levels full.
  • Check engine oil and ensure you have winter weight oil   5W-30.
  • Keep battery dry, clean, well connected and free of corrosion .
  • Make sure tire pressure is balanced
  • Check tire condition
  • Check coolant level and mixture and have it flushed every two years.

What to do in freezing rain driving conditions in Ontario…

  • Avoid driving in freezing rain.
  • Allow extra time for travel.
  • Do not drive if there are whiteouts, freezing rain or blizzards.
  • Never drink and drive. Use a designated driver, taxis, walk or sleepover when possible.
  • Buckle up your seat belt.
  • Ensure all passengers are buckled up.
  • Don’t drive if you are tired.
  • Slow down.
  • Keep at least 2 chevrons between you and the vehicle in front of you.

An accident can happen in an instant and can be devastating.  Most accidents can be avoided.  Please take the time and share this with friends and family. It could help save a life.

Have a safe and happy holiday season.

Ottawa Lawyer David Holingsworth on Ottawa weather and expected freezing rain and ice on Ottawa roads and sidewalks.

Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth and Associates.. Be careful Ottawa residents. We are expecting freezing rain. It’s that time of year when we have to remind ourselves that black ice may be present on the roads. It is expected that we will get a winter storm today. Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning in effect for Ottawa this morning. We are also expected to get a  heavy snowfall tonight  which will turn to ice pellets mixed with freezing rain tonight with estimated 5 to 10 cm of snow and ice.  It is expected that we may see up to 10 to 15 cm of snow in the Ottawa area.  Environment Canada also predicts that Ottawa will bring see ice pellets mixed with freezing rain, changing to freezing rain tomorrow  morning . As an Ottawa personal injury lawyer, I can tell you that these are some very dangerous driving conditions , as we are early in the winter season and drivers have not adapted to potential ice on the road. I also want to caution Ottawa pedestrians , as the sidewalks and roads will be very slippery .  Be safe out there Ottawa !

Ottawa weather looks great. Please drive carefully. Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Injury Lawyer..It’s looking gorgeous out there Ottawa. I wanted to wish everyone a wonderful and safe weekend.  Please be safe out on the roads.  If you are drinking, please do not drive.  Designate a driver, call a taxi or if possible walk.  We have had some terrible Ottawa accidents already this summer .

Every day an  average of  4 Canadians are killed and 174 suffer personal injuries due to drunk driving accidents. It is estimated that 1,250 and 1,500 people die and more than 63,000 Canadians suffer personal injury yearly due to drunk driving accidents.

Please take every step possible to be safe.  Use your hands free device and if you don’t have one, but your phone away while driving. Enjoy what looks to be a gorgeous sunny weekend in Ottawa and be safe.    -Ottawa Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa expecting snow and freezing rain tomorrow, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…I can’t believe it but apparently it is going to snow and freeze rain tomorrow.  What worries me is that many of us have already removed our snow tires and this could be dangerous, leading to an increased rate of Ottawa accidents. There is a storm front moving in beginning with rain, then turning to snow.  The snow will not likely stick around for long but will make driving conditions a challenge in the Ottawa and eastern Ontario area. Please take your time tomorrow out on the roads.  There will be many more cars on the roads, especially on the highway out to Scotiabank Place.  Leave extra braking distance between you and the vehicle in front of you . Please also look out for cyclists and pedestrians, as your braking speed may be affected by the severe change in weather.  Drive safely.

Ottawa weather: Snowfall warning Ottawa, Kanata, Orleans, Ottawa lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth…Look out Ottawa, Kanata, Orleans and everything in between. The snow is coming again.  It was just starting to feel like spring and yes,…you guessed it…we are expecting close to 15 centimetres of snow today.  Get your shovels out and get ready.  Please make sure your walkways are clear and as safe as possible for pedestrians coming onto your property. As a property owner, you are responsible for making your property as safe as possible.

If you are planning on driving, please slow down, take the extra time to arrive safely. Winter driving conditions are very different.  All vehicles take much longer to stop on snowy and icy roads. You may not see the ice but it could be there. Absolutely do  not use your cruise control in wet, snowy or icy conditions. If your vehicle skids or hydroplanes, cruise control may cause your car to accelerate, which gives you less control and will impact on your reaction time and the ability to control your car. Slow down and leave yourself lots of time to stop. Giver yourself more time than usual between you and other vehicles. If you need to stop, brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels lock up, ease off slightly from the brake. Always drive with your headlights on. Even during the day. This gives you the best chance of being seen. Always keep your lights and windshield clean. It is safest to drive in low gears. Bridges, overpasses and side roads will freeze first in inclement weather, so use extra caution. Avoid passing any vehicles when driving in challenging weather.  Its just too risky and drivers have limited visibility.

Most of all, use common sense.  Just keep in mind that icy, wet and snowy conditions bring along a whole new set of challenges. Drive safely out there today Ottawa.  It’s snowing lightly right now and there is more to come. Have a great, safe and happy weekend.     -Ottawa personal injury lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa weather expected : heavy wet snowfall up to 15 cm. Please drive safely!, Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Weather.  Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer David Hollingsworth….Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Ottawa area tonight night, with up to 15 centimetres of wet snow coming our way overnight. A winter storm watch was upgraded to the snowfall warning early today for the area from Brockville Gatineau, including the City of Ottawa. The snowstorm is expected to start with light rain in the afternoon then turning to wet snow.  They say there’s potential for up to 15 centimetres of wet snow by tomorrow morning, with the highest amounts coming along the Ontario/Quebec border and smaller amounts in the St. Lawrence River Valley. There will then be a sharp drop in temperatures, but Environment Canada says there’s not much risk of the flash freeze. Please try your best to stay off the roads.  If you need to be out, drive slowly and safely.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when driving in icy conditions:

  • Exercise extreme caution after a long dry spell.
  • Allow for more travel time.
  • Brake earlier and with less force
  • Stay toward the middle of the road to avoid deep standing puddles.
  • Don’t use cruise control.
  • If you see a large puddle up ahead, drive around it or choose a different route.
  • Don’t attempt to cross running water.
  • After you cross a puddle, tap on your brake pedal lightly to dry off some of the water on your rotors.
  • Turn on your headlights
  • Watch out for pedestrians.
  • If it’s raining so hard that you can’t see the road or the car in front of you, pull over and wait it out.
  • Track the car ahead of you.
  • Give a truck or bus extra distance.
  • Defog your windows.
  • If you start to hydroplane, don’t brake suddenly or turn the wheel, or you might spin into a skid.
