The Ottawa Citizen reported that 5 young Ottawa Irish Rugby Club players who were rushed to hospital yesterday — including a 15-year-old in critical condition — after their SUV rolled over on Ottawa’s Moodie Drive have been released from Ottawa hospital and are recovering at home. “They’re in good spirits,” said Tim Powers, an executive member of the Ottawa Irish Rugby Club. The accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. just north of Cambrian Drive. Five players were riding home to the Rockland area in a Chevrolet Suburban, driven by their coach, from a Saturday afternoon match at Twin Elm Park when the SUV rolled over. Police are still investigating the cause. An 18-year-old passenger sustained back injuries and a puncture wound to his stomach and was taken to hospital in serious condition. A 19-year-old and 15-year-old were both taken to hospital in stable condition. The 23-year-old male driver, who is a former Ottawa Irish player, and other passenger were treated on scene and released. The most seriously injured was another 15-year-old sitting on the front passenger side, which took the brunt of the impact. He sustained a critical head injury, a serious shoulder injury, and significant blood loss. He was transported to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. He had about 48 stitches, Powers said, but still can’t wait to get back on the field.“He told the club president when he got home that he’ll be back out there by Tuesday,” Powers said. “I think the doctors might disagree with him on the time but it just shows that these boys are doing well.” The rugby season continues on until early November. Powers said it’s unsure whether all the players will return this season but they will make full recoveries.
