Ottawa Car Accident , Fire Truck Accident , Kirkwood and Laperriere

Ottawa Car Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth..Ottawa Police are investigating after an Ottawa accident that involved a fire truck and a car in the Carlington area today. The Ottawa accident happened about 4:30 p.m. at Kirkwood and Laperriere avenues.  The driver of the fire truck was sent to an Ottawa hospital with minor head injuries and a sore back and has since been released. The other 3 members of the crew in the truck were uninjured.

Regrettably, the 66-year-old male driver of the car was also sent to an Ottawa hospital with unknown injuries. He was the only person in the vehicle. The firefighters in the truck looked after both drivers until paramedics arrived on scene. The fire truck was not responding to a call at the time. I hope this man’s personal injuries are not severe and he has a full, speedy and healthy recovery from this accident.  Personal injuries suffered from a car accident can have life-long and life altering effects.  I hope this is not the case here….

Ontario Winter Driving Safety Tips: Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Ontario Car Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth..Yesterday, I coached my son’s hockey team in a tournament in Lanark.  It was a great day, the tournament was well run and all the people around were very nice .  Then at about 6:00pm, we started making our way home.  It was fine for the first 10 minutes, then we hit highway 7 to come home…Well, that was frightening.  The snow was blowing so hard, I had no idea what lane I was in.  I couldn’t tell where the lanes were whatsoever.  At times, I actually felt dizzy staring at the snow.  Luckily , everyone around me was doing the same thing: TAKING IT SLOW !  It was a very stressful ride home and in the end , the 5 of us made it home safely.  So,why am I telling you this?  It is what prompted me to share the following information I found on Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation website. Please take a couple of minutes to read it thoroughly.  It could save lives..

When Visibility Turns Bad – Driving in Blowing Snow and Whiteouts

DO:

  • Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions.
  • Make sure the full lighting system of your vehicle is turned on.
  • Be patient. Avoid passing, changing lanes and crossing traffic.
  • Increase your following distance. You will need extra distance to brake safely.
  • Stay alert. Keep looking as far ahead as possible.
  • Reduce the distractions in your vehicle. Your full attention is required.
  • Keep your windows and mirrors clean. Use defroster and wipers to maximize your vision.
  • Try to get off the road when visibility is near zero. Pull into a safe parking area if possible.

DON’T:

  • Don’t stop on the travelled portion of the road. You could become the first link in a chain-reaction collision.
  • Don’t attempt to pass a vehicle moving slowly or speed up to get away from a vehicle that is following too closely.

REMEMBER:

  • Watch your speed. You may be going faster than you think. If so, reduce speed gradually.
  • Leave a safe braking distance between you and the vehicle ahead.
  • Stay alert. Remain calm and patient.
  • If visibility is decreasing rapidly, do not stop on the road. Look for an opportunity to pull off the road into a safe parking area and wait for conditions to improve.
  • If you become stuck or stranded in severe weather, stay with your vehicle for warmth and safety until help arrives. Slightly open a window for ventilation. Run your motor sparingly. Use your emergency flashers.
  • Be prepared and carry a winter driving survival kit that includes items such as warm clothing, non-perishable energy foods, flashlight, shovel, blanket, etc.

Before you drive, and during your trip, check weather forecasts and road reports. If there is a weather warning or reports of poor visibility and driving conditions, delay your trip until conditions improve, if possible.

Ottawa accident bank street and Conroy results in death Bertha MacLeod

Ottawa Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth..My thoughts go out to the friends and family of Bertha MacLeod   —I am also relieved to learn that her 2 grandsons who were in the car at the time thankfully escaped the tragic accident without serious injury.  Bertha was  killed in a car accident on Bank Street yesterday. Bertha MacLeod was from Russell, Ontario. MacLeod, 69, was on her way to meet her daughter Peggy for lunch when her Chrysler Sebring was T-boned by a Dodge Dakota pick-up truck at the intersection of Bank St. and Kemp Dr.

She was unconscious when Ottawa firefighters pried the driver’s side door off the car. She was pronounced dead in an Ottawa hospital. At the time of the accident, MacLeod was baby-sitting her daughter’s two sons, ages 8 and 10, who were in the back seat. Thankfully, he boys were not seriously injured but were sore and upset.  Bertha was a widower whose husband died two years ago, her daughter said. The 66-year-old male driver of the pickup was uninjured.

Ottawa Ontario Slip and Fall Accident Lawyer, Slip and Fall Compensation

Ottawa Ontario Slip and Fall Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth…Although our snow seems to have disappeared this weekend, it will be back and it will be back with a vengeance. One of the major hazards of living in Ontario is dealing with large amounts of snow and ice. Every winter, people living in Ontario and specifically Ottawa, Ontario receive a heavy dose of  winter white wonderland. While the sight of falling and accumulating snow can be pretty, a slip and fall accident on  snow or ice can be very painful and may have life and implications on your health.

Many people in Ontario and Ottawa don’t realize that landlords and homeowners have the responsibility of clearing snow and ice to prevent slip and fall injuries, as best as reasonably possible. If a person suffers from a slip and fall accident  while walking on snow or ice that should have been cleared, the injured victim can sue for damages associated with that slip and fall accident in Ontario.

With all of the dangers associated with winter walking, driving and travel during the winter in Ontario, it is important to know what to do after a slip and fall accident in Ontario.

What To Do After a Slip and Fall Accident in Ontario…

There are several steps that should be taken after an Ontario slip and fall accident.  Here is a brief overview:

- Seek medical attention immediately: If the personal  injuries resulting from an Ontario slip and fall are serious, such as a brain injury or back injury and spinal cord injury, the victim should get immediate medical attention.

- Note the scene of the accident: After a slip and fall accident where you have suffered serious personal injury, it is important to document the ground conditions. It is critical to remember whether the ground was snow covered, icy, uncleared or partially uncleared of snow, ice or other obstacles.

- Gather evidence from the slip and fall accident: After a slip and fall accident in Ontario, gather evidence that include the slip and fall accident location , photos of the condition of the ground (use your phone), contact information of witnesses, such as names and phone numbers, and the landowner or homeowner where the Ontario slip and fall accident occurred.

- Contact an experienced Ontario Slip and Fall Accident Lawyer: An Ottawa personal injury lawyer can help an injured victim gather the best evidence, prepare the file  and  investigate who is responsible for the medical costs, personal injuries and lost wages after an Ontario  slip and fall accident in Ottawa.

After a serious Ontario slip and fall accident resulting in personal injury, it may be difficult to remember these crucial steps. If you are unable to gather evidence and report the slip and fall accident yourself, you should contact an experienced personal injury lawyer asap and have them help you so you can focus on your recovery from your slip and fall accident and they can work on getting you maximum compensation for your personal injuries.  You have been through enough, let an experienced slip and fall injury lawyer help you…

Fatal Ottawa Car Accidents Rise in 2010, Ottawa Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Lawyer, Ottawa Law Firms, Personal Injury Lawyer in Ottawa David Hollingsworth…These statistics serve as a sad reminder to us all to please drive safely.  This holiday season in Ottawa has already had some devastating tragic accidents.  An Ottawa car accident on Friday night marked Ottawa’s 36th fatal vehicle accident of the year, making 2010 one of the deadliest years ever on city roads. There were 25 fatal motor vehicle  accidents in 2009. Ottawa’s worst year was 2007, when 39 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents. Unfortunately 2010 has been a year in which Ottawa fatal accidents were statistically high. Ottawa police are increasing their presence on the streets during the holiday season.

I want to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season…take the time and avoid distractions to arrive safely…

Ottawa Accident: Wrongful Death Accident: Elderly Man dies

Ottawa Law Firms Ottawa Accident Lawyer- David Hollingsworth-  Ottawa Car Accident Pedestrian-Sadly, an elderly man is dead after he was struck by a van while crossing the street with the aid of a walker yesterday in Ottawa’s east end. Ottawa paramedics were called to the scene at Alta Vista Dr. and Dale Ave. at 6:52 p.m. where the man, in his 70s, lay near the mangled remains of the walker. A grey minivan sat idle with its windshield shattered, the front end a wreck. Two quick-acting off-duty paramedics — one a local superintendent en-route to a nearby Ottawa hospital for his own personal family emergency and the other a Canadian Armed Forces paramedic who was in the area — responded to the scene within seconds. Despite their efforts and those of paramedics who arrived five minutes later, the man died of his personal injuries. Paramedics said the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, suffered severe, multi-system trauma. Ottawa police are investigating the crash. My thoughts are with this man’s friends and family. May he rest in peace.

Renfrew Car Accident , Ontario Car Accident Lawyer David Hollingsworth

Ottawa Accident Lawyer, Renfrew Car Accident Lawyer  David Hollingsworth — Highway 17 was closed early Wednesday morning for about two kilometres at Renfrew, forcing all traffic to detour through the town. Provincial police said there was a serious car accident on the two-lane highway, though they didn’t immediately have details. The highway was closed between O’Brien Road and Bruce Street. Those are the two main highway exits to Renfrew, at the east and west ends of the town, respectively. I hope everyone involved in this Renfrew accident is ok and has a speedy recovery.

Slip and Fall Accidents on Private Property , Ottawa Lawyer, Personal Injury Ottawa

Slip and Fall Accidents on Private Property

Hallowe’en has come and gone for another year..and snow is just around the corner and I wanted to share a little information with you, pertaining to slip and fall accidents on private property. A serious personal injury from a slip and fall accident can happen anywhere.  Someone could trip on a hockey stick, skipping rope, leaves, really just about anything. Were you aware that as a homeowner, you are responsible for keeping your premises as safe as possible?  For example, if someone has had a slip and fall accident inside your home, be it a friend, neighbour, or anyone outside your family living permanently in the household, they may be entitled to financial compensation for any personal injuries they have suffered. It’s extremely important that owners of private residences have a legal obligation to keep their property reasonably safe for third parties.

Some common examples of slip and fall accidents as a result of homeowner negligence include:

  • A slip and fall accident on ice and snow on a driveway or front entrance
  • A slip and fall accident on wet or slick floors/tiles
  • A slip and fall accident on a slick or wet substance that leaks from another person’s home
  • A trip and fall accident on loose steps, flooring or tiles
  • A trip and fall accident on a lawn or garden

Before the snow hits, try to make the time to clear your laneway, stairs, halls…property and make sure it is clear of obstacles and if possible, well lit.  A quick tidy up of the yard, steps and driveway, could make all the difference and keep all us all safe !
