Andrew Todd’s bus accident story was featured in the Ottawa Sun and in case you missed it, I thought I would share it with you. I am so fortunate in my line of work to be able to meet incredible people who have over huge obstacles in their lives. Often times they turn tragedy into willpower. I am always so fascinated by people’s strength and courage. Although I have never met Andrew Todd, I believe he is one of these very strong people…
Andrew Todd is a 24 year old athlete who defied the odds. He attends the University of Ottawa with a focus on science and is an incredible rower. In fact, he was trying out for the national rowing team. One day, while he was training he was hit and dragged by a school bus. His injuries could have been fatal but thankfully weren’t. He did however suffer serious injury to his leg and pelvis and 1/3 of his knee is missing. He also suffered serious internal injuries such as arterial bleeding in his stomach and road rash. He survived the accident and has had several surgeries since. His mother was interviewed by the Ottawa Sun and was quotes as saying “he’s very lucky to be alive,” That’s for sure. Andrew and his family know that Andrew defied the odds. When he first came into the hospital’s trauma unit, it didn’t look good.
Andrew was determined and his recovery is the proof. Even as he sits in a hospital bed in the Ottawa Hospital Trauma Unit, he is determined to represent Canada in rowing someday at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics . Todd is working on a full recovery but admits that he may have to take up adaptive rowing. With Andrew’s amazing positive attitude, I have no doubt , he will.
What a true inspiration.
