Hello all — July is generally a very high rate month for Spinal Cord Injuries (“SCI’s”). Learn more about spinal cord injuries to raise awareness and promote ways that you can avoid the causes of spinal cord injuries. Causes of spinal cord injuries are highest in the bracket of automobile and other motor-vehicle vehicle accidents, at 44% of all cases according to one new study. Acts of violence cause spinal cord injuries about 24% of the time. Slip and falls are a close third at 22% of all cases. Athletic sports at 8%, and the remaining 2% from other activities such as cliff diving, holiday adventures, and other random high-risk activities generally.

Generally, the summer is the worst time for SCI, with July having the highest incidence as mentioned. SCI’s have been observed to occur more often on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, and in the evenings. Males experience SCI more often than females (at 82% vs. 18% respectively), and the average age for a SCI is about 32 years old. Also commonly known, drugs such as alcohol contribute substantially to SCI’s, with alcohol specifically accounting for 25% or more of cases.

Some people are more susceptible to the prospect of SCI. These are individuals that may suffer already from such diseases or genetic conditions as (1) atlantoaxial instability, (2) osteoporosis (3) congenital conditions, and (4) spinal arthropathies. This list is not exhaustive. It indicates that each individual is unique and thus will injure in a unique manner. So please drive safely and exercise caution when engaged in any of the activities as enumerated in the list above regarding causes of Spinal Cord Injuries. No one is invincible, and each day, countless innocent unsuspecting individuals are needlessly hurt on our roads and in our communities. Let us unite in fighting spinal cord injuries and in helping those who have become victims of these tragic injuries and accidents.
